Toroko Gorge is the best. Worth a couple days riding and hiking. We went in 2022 before the 2024 earthquake. Now travel in the gorge may be somewhat restricted but it is huge so see what you can. PS I also walked the whole gorge in 1973 when I was younger.

Unfortunately as it’s winter the roads are icey and we don’t have the right clothes or gear for that weather. We were so disappointed when we realised we couldn’t go there!

My first visit to Sun Moon Lake was summer 1973, very very hot but always lovely. I have pictures at that temple then, it was very quiet. Last time we went was 2022, we took a high speed rail then direct bus. Most highly recommended in Taiwan.

I'm not sure if you have extra time to explore, but I sincerely recommend visiting Taiwan's outlying islands, Matsu and Lanyu (Orchid Island). Matsu, located in the northernmost part of Taiwan near China, has a completely different architectural style and even a distinct language compared to the main island. Most Taiwanese have never been there. Lanyu, situated off Taiwan's eastern coast, is a beautiful and tranquil island. You can spend the whole day diving and daydreaming by the beach without anyone disturbing you. Lastly, Taiwan boasts 258 mountains over 3,000 meters high. If you enjoy hiking, this is an adventure you cannot miss. You can walk along cliffs, alpine meadows where deer roam, or trek through forests. It's like paradise. Just watch out for wild boars and black bears!

We have 3 things must experience for taiwanese, 1. Climbing Jade Mountain (3952M) 2. Sun Moon Lake Swimming(3KM) 3. Cycling round Taiwan island; Sun Moon Lake cycling route is beautiful too~

We would have loved to climb Jade Mountain but as it’s winter we couldn’t, we will just have to come back 😆 I read you cannot swim in Sun Moon Lake though?

There will be a marathon held on February and October. Running a full circle of Sunmoon lake is about 29k. Very difficult but different experience.
