This one was a delight to watch. I really liked how you covered so many foods or drinks in a correct way with also stating on point information about them. Let me help you out with the tea dilemma you have :) The tea culture is huge in Turkey. Turkey is the country with the highest tea consumption per capita in the whole world with 3,16 kg of tea annually per person. Throughout the day, tea is almost always there as an irreplaceable part of Turkish social life. Think of a 5 o'clock tea, that is spread over the day, almost every day :D It's almost unimaginable to have a breakfast without tea. It accompanies many chit chats and gossips between friends and family members. When you are done with your food, it's offered by many restaurants. When you go to a shop and you have some time to spend, the shop owner immediately asks whether you would like some tea and orders it from the nearby small 'çay ocağı' or 'tea house'. This culture is so strong that even when the times changed and the people started working at big company headquarters and offices, the tea habit still lived on. You can still find some employees who are only responsible for brewing and serving tea in some companies and state offices. So all in all, some people really drink 8-10 cups a day while the majority of the people stay around 2-3 cups a day. While there are some people who don't like tea at all, I also know some people who have headaches if they don't drink tea in a day. It is like an addiction really :) When it comes to the drink itself, the reigning champion is the black tea, which is mostly produced in the Eastern Black Sea region. The soil, mountainous landscape, proximity to the sea and a lot of rainfall combination turns this part of the country into a green lush heaven with a huge tea production.Some people also love the so called 'kaçak çay'. This is a type of ceylon tea which literally means 'smuggled tea' because they are mostly illegally imported from the neighboring countries in the east. The drinking habits change from person to person and sometimes you can see debates on the correct way of drinking tea :) Some people like it 'açık' (light) , some 'koyu' (dark) by diluting the tea with hot water in different amounts. The so called 'tavşan kanı çay' (rabbit blood colored tea) expression is an old way of saying that the tea is brewed perfectly and ready to be consumed. Another term is 'paşa çayı' (pasha tea), which refers to the warm/lukewarm tea that is added with a bit of cold water to make it easier to drink, especially for the children. The sugar consumption is also very subjective. Some people (including me) drink it without sugar and some people... well they can have 6-7 sugars... Then, there is this special type of drinking tea with keeping a lump of hard sugar in mouth, which is called as 'kıtlama' and it is very popular in eastern regions of Turkey. Some people are known to be deadly serious when it comes to drinking tea with sugar. They literally despise the act of putting sugar into tea :D So, all in all the tea culture is very strong in Turkey. Surely Turkey is also very famous in some countries for it's traditional Turkish coffee. But many Turkish people would enjoy the strong Turkish coffee once or twice a day, typically after a nice meal. On the other hand, tea is there for the whole day , every day :D

Greetings from Canada. I am Turk living in Canada and i give you reciepe of Ayran which you call liquid gold. Our Turkish yoghurt isn't sold in the USA however you can find Dahi yoghurt (probably indian) at a supermarkets like Costco. You can prepare for yourself almost same ayran. I was shocked when i tried that yoghurt and it was so similar to ours. So take that dahi yoghurt with max percentage of fat and put 6-7 spoons (it's sufficent for 2 glasses of ayran)to bowl or mug whatever you want. Add a little salt and slowly pour cold water and stir with whisk almost a minute. It's ready. But dont forget you should not pour all water same time. You should pour while stiring. And you will decide when you stop adding water. If water is more it won't be tasty as you tried. I belive that you can find your ideal after a few attempts. If you add extremely low water greted garlic and cucumber and a little olive oil you get cacık which is known with stolen name ''Tzatziki'' Marash ice cream has extraordinary 2 ingredients. It's made of goat milk and salep (it's dried root of a spesific orchid). Those ice creams which you are used to are made of foamed cow milk.

It's nice seeing all your viewpoints, inferences and how true you get them. As you experience the city you would start understanding why we have some routines or interest in some type of activites, and like i said you two get them perfectly. While watching, in the middle of the video i just heard you say you needed to stop for tea time. That's actually why tea is consumed on a large basis. Not that we are in love with the taste but because it has became a routine for people to chill, relax and warm up after a long time. Because as we all know if you keep drinking the same thing over and over again for almost 8 times a day it would get boring lol. Also sorry to hear you experienced dry doners, or a fishy fish! (I understand the taste.) Always a sad time eating at a place that doesnt care about their product that much. I don't like them either. A sad part about traveling i guess, not knowing the great places and trying to squeeze through misinformation. Great video overall, hope you enjoyed your time here!

So you ate the wrong wrap two times:)) But don’t worry, locals don’t wait 30 minutes in the queue for the original one and eat from the second vendor you visited, too. Also it’s cheaper than the famous one. I have to add none of the wrapped fishes are from the Bosporus. They usually come here frozen, from Norway. The Bosporus has not that much fish to feed all the citizens of Istanbul plus millons of tourists who all want to try that famous wrap:))

for the sugar-tea ratio its totaly up to your preference. some people don't use sugar at all. and it's our go to drink with practically everything. especially at breakfeast. most Turks can't start breakfeast without tea. other than that we generally drink it after meals or with sweet/savory snacks and pastries. at home we almost have tea ready all day. if guests coming we make tea. if we have a family time at evening we have tea. it is essential like a water for us 😄 also about döner, it depends where do you eat for taste. every shop have diffrent style but same concept. so the best experience come with luck or knowledge about döner shops. local and small shops are best for me. thanks for your visit and kind words about our country and people. you guys should visit other cities too. good video! I prefer buying simit from a simit fırını instead as it's served straight out of oven (not a brand, just referring to bakeries that produce simit ONLY), because of the crunch it's really worth it. Also you can eat it with 'üçgen peynir' or maybe feta and have some turkish tea as a side. It was my favorite thing to have as breakfast when i was little. Döner looked kinda weak... There are lots of places to get döner in turkey and since they all make it different, it's not rare to encounter a bad place. And there are lots of döner types too. I think the must try ones are iskender (it comes with yoghurt so people drink coke as a side. also don't start to eat as soon as it's served, because waiter will come back and pour melted butter on the food), et sandviç/dürüm, tavuk sandviç/dürüm, hatay tavuk dürüm and hatay et dürüm. For lahmacun, it's usually eaten by putting the salad inside it, squeezing lemon in and wrapping it like a burrito. Ayran is preferred as a side drink with it 90% of the time. And with fish wrap or sandwiches, it's common to drink pickle juice or şalgam as a side. My biggest recommendation would be going to an ocakbaşı and trying iskender here, also they include lots of other turkish cuisines so it'd be a good place to go. Paik Jong Won has two series on youtube called [Acıktım_İstanbul] and Street Food Fighter, which i recommend watching because he eats just like a local in the videos. Edit: street food fighter is uploaded by tvn and fully korean, still good videos to get a glimpse

I am a tea addict. Even in Los Angeles, where I lived for 3 years, this behavior did not change. I drink about 10 glasses of unsweetened Turkish tea a day. Especially in the last 5 years, people in Turkey have started to stop adding sugar to their tea because of the harmful effects of sugar. At least half of the people I know drink unsweetened tea. In short, you should not add sugar to understand that it is a good tea.
@MaxandSidneyАй бұрын
Wow, 10!! We noticed right away how serious people are about their tea in Türkiye 😊☕️ we are trying to only add one sugar, and eventually hopefully we can appreciate the natural (strong) taste!

@@MaxandSidney kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIHPaZ6Alphqf6ssi=BO2azSTIjx3CEY87 I am leaving a link to an English speech about Turkish tea. An English speech starts at the 47th second. I think you will like it very much. A speech by an American writer about the Turks' love of tea. You have come to Turkey with pleasure. I hope you return home with beautiful memories and stories.

The sugar amount in tea is just personal. I used to use at least 3 cubes in a smaller glass u used in the video and couldn't even stand the bitterness of tea without sugar. Now, I can only drink without sugar and any sugar in my tea makes me wanna vomit the moment I taste. So, try it and decide yourself, don't feel like you have to follow the habbits majority of the locals do. Enjoy your trip :)
@MaxandSidneyАй бұрын
Makes sense! It definitely is a strong bitter taste, but the sugar adds a different dimension. Thanks for watching our video!

The number of sugar cubes you put in your tea is up to you, some people here in Turkey says that drinking Turkish black tea with sugar is a crime😅 but there are so many people who drink it sugary as well

2:57 Since the 90's trash cans have been removed from highly populated areas because there has been several instances of terrorists planting bombs in them. You can find trash containers in the alleyways. Or, you can just ask stores nearby to take your trash.

Ayran is made from yoghurt "Yogurt " in turkish ,Yoghurt was found by Turks in central asia ,Yoghurt was first heard in Europe when a french king or nobleman was very sick,The sultan at the time sent his best healers (Hekim) to france there they gave this king day and night yoghurt and this is how the french got to know off yoghurt "Yogurt" and from there the knowledge was passed on .

Due to bombings 10-15 years ago, almost all garbage bins in busy areas have been removed. Instead, many street sweepers have been hired to try to clean the streets around the clock.
