my most vivid memory in Vietnam was stationed on a gun boat up the river I was a radioman and heard a distress call on the Army frequency I responded to the call and got their location, Capt went to GQ and we sent a round in 40mm. i got a reply left 25 out 50 we sent another round in and got screams and cheering from the troops that were pinned down.. then we opened up and sent as many as fast as the gun would send the round all the while i could hear them cheering ..never did find out who we saved that one day ... but at least i felt i made a difference...

I remember this song well. It was being played on Armed Forces Radio when I commenced my tour of duty in Vietnam (June '66). A lot of us felt the song was a bit corny, but we also felt that this guy had earned the right to be as corny as he wished! He was a brave man who deserved to live a much longer life. RIP Barry.

Geno Garton California Dreaming! I remember that song well. We hit the Delta at the same time I see. Who were you with? One of our ops was to keep the main drag free so that the US 25th Division could get through to Tay Ninh Province. We must have done our job OK because I spoke to a couple of 25th guys in Vung Tau later on and they said the only time they didn't get sniped at was when they passed through our sector. Glad to see you made it through your tour OK.

The song is about war and killing and to some that is offensive. During the Vietnam War they burned the flag, their draft cards, fled to Canada and even wore a diaper to their physical (Ted Nugent), got medical deferments (Donald Trump), got into the National Guard (Bush with the help of daddy.) Some weren't a fortunate one. But I served for their right to protest and had to wait 30 years to have someone thank me for my service. But I say don't thank me if it hadn't been for the draft I wouldn't have served.

But never disrespect the true soldiers loyalty to his or her call of duty. Barry Sadler your song become an inspiration to many young soldier. And it bring memories back of the not so young ones . What a “beautiful” song. Not quite the right word but very patriotic and proud. It just stirs your heart. That is why it tears me up to see what has happened to our military today. These brave soldiers fighting for the US to be treated like 2nd class citizens today. All the inclusive, effeminate teaching is destructive to a cohesive, strong force. I truly hope we get through this nonsense and can start a new America from scratch, where our soldiers can be recognised for the important and brave people they are. I read about how he died and it said that he was shot in the head. Some people thought that he accidentally shot himself. Are you telling me that a Staff Sergeant would shoot himself accidentally? I think someone tried to kill him. This was a man of honor, one many can learn from. RIP, Staff Sergeant Sadler.
