This is a quick review of my favorite fly rod and reel combo to fish with, the MaxCatch Ultraglass 6wt fly rod paired with a MaxCatch Avid Pro 5-7wt r eel. I am running 20lb MaxCatch backing and MaxCatch Outbound WF6F saltwater fly line. As you can see, I am a fan of MaxCatch, the gear from them is so much better than anything you can get from any other company at their price point.

How’s the reel holding up in the salt? How do you like it vs the Sparta?

It has performed flawlessly so far in saltwater. I just do a freshwater rinse when I am done and let it air dry before putting it away. I have three avid pro's to give you an idea how much I like them (5/7 and two 7/9) . The Sparta is very nice and its what I use for offshore but inshore I stick to the avid pro's since they are quite a bit lighter and easily get the job done.

I keep my Avid Pro in freshwater. I like that it is narrow and tall. Great reel!

the only problem is the ultraglass rods only have one locking mechanism for the reel and they come loose after a while of casting.

I haven't run into that problem but I can see how it could happen. I do prefer double locking reel rings and wish they would add them to it.

Great review! I like MaxCatch reels. I have two Avid Pros in 3/5 and 5/7 as well as the HVC 7/8 and Sparta 7/9. They are all fantastic. I just bought the Ultraglass 7' 3wt in orange for small streams in the backcountry.

Thats a nice collection you have. How do you like the HVC? I am interested in picking one up soon. The price on its great and I need something to throw on a spare 8wt I have laying around to use as a loaner for people coming into town that don't have saltwater sized gear.

I use the HVC on a 10’6” 3wt Switch rod in the salt for sea run cutthroats. It’s great, very light and very smooth. If I ran Bauer, Ross, Lamson, or about any other reel company other Danielsson, I’d be worried.

I like the HVC better than the Drake. I have a Drake that I use on a 6wt. The spool release knob is really small, it’s difficult to get a firm grip or enough leverage to unscrew it to change spools. This is especially true with wet hands .

What size of flies can you throw well on this? Also, how does the drag perform when fighting a big fish?

I regularly throw closures tied using size 2 hooks, haven't tried anything larger since I use it mainly as a speckled trout rod inshore but I can try some larger flies this weekend and report back. The avid pro is awesome, I currently own 4 of them in 3 sizes and it is probably my favorite all around reel. I have cheaper ones and more expensive ones but the Avid Pro gets everything done so it kind of has become my default. The drag is smooth and predictable without any catching or grabbing as the fish pulls, just a nice steady pull.

Thank you and yeah, if you can't tell I really like the glass rod. I have a Hardy Zane rod that retails for 600ish that just sits in the corner because I prefer this MaxCatch one.
