Having a culture’s base be family is not a good thing my guy. Constantly being shamed about work visa fraud and immigration, female related violence in India hurts our image tremendously. But this is a big ploy by the western UK/US elite. They will continue to portray that to show their supremacy. There is little we can do about it as individuals. The elite all have their investments in the US. They will not speak up. Shockingly India is now the poorest country in the world. Nigeria overtook India. It’s tough. Indian Union is a messy chaotic place where there is no unity to fight this trade and wealth imbalance. I thought a lot about it and I feel sad how not many in India including rich and politicians simply do not understand how contemptuous the western elite are towards India and Indians. Our society building in Hyderabad is full of East European people as well as many Spanish & Taiwanese. I asked many of them the reason - it is almost always their work forced them to come to India and now they don't want to go back. They have "easy life". This gentleman probably explained some of the things like delivery, UPI etc which, I personally have taken for granted

For all the expats in india, checkout the local park in morning hours for a walk. 6 am to 0830 am. Lots of Indians go for a morning walk and it so peaceful (most of the time). Also you do get to meet a community.

Nice to hear other peoples experiences of India as an expat or long term resident.I'm Australian and spent multiple years living in a small village in Goa with my Goan husband in the 1990's. I also found that my use of english changed to suit the local grammar style and my accent became slightly 'Indianised'. I was unaware of this until my sister mentioned it to me later. I also had difficulty with the Konkani language though finally managed to have functional Konkani after a couple of years. It made local travel and day to day life less isolating. Not many people I knew spoke english at that time. Now when I go back to Goa, the percentage of native Goan's living in Goa seems less than the that of Indians from other states and Hindi seems to the dominant language used 'on the ground'. I love the food but never got used to the really really hot dishes - this didn't matter as we cooked most of our own food and I learned heaps of wonderful recipes. The only time I fell ill from food was from a cup of chai while staying in a cheap hotel in Old Delhi. My favourite thing was to bus into Margoa for shopping and stop for idli sambar and chai or puri badjo and chai before catching the bus home again. It was a simple life, I loved it. Mind you there is a lot of paperwork and bureaucratic hurdling to do with utilities, bill paying, council interactions and transport which can be time consuming and tiring if limited to buses.

A hot cup of chai should not make you ill. It could have been the cup itself if it was a cheap hotel. The guy here said that spices may be the reason people get sick but actually there’s bacteria which makes people sick. And when I say people I mean foreigners. Indians have a resistance to these bacteria…my friend and I ate the same food and only one of us got sick. Usually it’s water related so always drink packaged mineral water and don’t try pani-puri, local popsicles etc. Fruit juice from a street shop is fine as long as it doesn’t have ice in it because even the ice is made from the same tap water. Tea is safe because it’s steaming hot and that kills any bacteria but in your case that didn’t help.

Goa is inexorably slow for most Indians. We go there when we want to slow down. It's lovely but definitely not the place for efficiency. Most Indians would lose patience if they have to live there!

That movie was actually made by a British director who lived in Mumbai and was touted as someone who knows the city very well.

India now is pretty globalized. If you go to Google and type restaurants in Kohima and restaurants in Aizawl, you will be recommended several restaurants with google ratings above 4. Then you will find a whole lot of Italian, Korean and Chinese restaurants and you will even see pictures of funky mocktails. You can type restaurants in Hakha and Kale, Myanmar nearby across the border, what you will see are only some local joints serving Burmese food. However, there are foreigners only visiting slums in India and eating street foods, then they fall sick and an impression is created that India only has street food which makes you sick. Then I was seeing the list of 50 best restaurants in Asia, Odette from Singapore is ranked 6, Meta in Singapore is ranked 17, Masque in Mumbai is ranked 16th and Indian Accent in Delhi is ranked 19th. One of the best chefs in the world is Gaggan Anand who has opened a fine dining Indian restaurant called Gaggan Anand in Bangkok ranked 5th in Asia.

Actually Cycling is very easy if you are adapted to it and that too in most crowded places. Yes, you'lll have to slow down a bit or may even have to stop sometimes. But still its quite safe. I am 26 and never in my life seen someone die due to accident while riding a bicycle but have seen numerous accidents in case of a Motorcycle or a Car.

Let me repeat in a nutshell for you...every country has its flaws but the media is biased towards showing only the flaws that India has whereas western countries have a lot of huge issues too which nobody wants to show. That's unfair. In Canada, the US and the UK, healthcare is a joke. Nobody talks about that. Gun killings are a big issue in the US, nobody talks about that. I am a typical bald blue eyed white English man with a north west British accent. Around 7 years ago I began to start chanting “aum” on autopilot and started to have visions that I could only relate to being very Eastern and Hindu. But the greatness of India historically is even better than even the great British Geniuses and Inventors who crafted the modern world as we know it. In west bengal we do use the bicycle a lot , i have not seen that much in other parts of india except in east india. In east there is western influence more I think, u will find certain things here in the east than in other parts of india which will be good or much easier for ppl like u. Maybe south india is easier too to adjust

I’m from Jammu & I’ve travelled abroad to the east Asia & the west as well. Here at my place the weather is relatively good & I get free range eggs, chicken, meat & basically everything I need from Italian basil to apples, plums & what not homegrown in my house & rest from the market. Best place to live in India & lucky to be born here.

Cant agree more with your assessment on pros and cons of india which i have come to realise more and more while staying away (in UK) Food, affordability/ comfort and growing dynamic economy are positives. Weather, traffic are biggest dampner

Well, that's a very good point. It's easy for him to say that the UK has lots to learn from India, when what he likes in India is that there are millions of poor people whom he can pay cheaply to perform services for him. It would not be good for Britain if we emulated that model. What I hope most for India is good education and good jobs for all its people, and then I think he would find it costs rather more to be waited on hand and foot.
