What happened to this American in 7 years in the Filipino family

I am from the Philippines and British passport holder. I worked abroad (UAE/Scotland/Norway) since 1978. In 2022 I returned here in the Philippines to retire. Bought a condo in Manila and just finished building my 7 bedrooms all en-suite retirement home in the province 2 hours drive by car from Manila. I adopted my eldest sister and her husband who are in their 80's and do not have children and only finished grade 5 in school. I also adopted my younger sister whose contract was terminated in Dubai because of Covid. If I will not allow them to live with me in the provinces - they will end up begging in the streets! I also built a pet area for their rescued 50 plus dogs and cats from Dubai and Manila. The Bible says we are the extension of God's helping hands. Do you think I will have a peaceful sleep thinking my sister's are begging in the streets while I am enjoying the fruits of my hardwork abroad? My conscience tells me to help them and God will pay me back - and I thank God I am blessed to be a blessing to my family who ended up poor to no fault of their own. I am Westernised in my thinking but I kept the compassion in my heart.

I love how he explained the culture more than the "dating" aspect. He appreciates wife not because she is Filipina but because she is wonderful as a person. I love how he did not encourage people to go to Philippines just to date and get married. I know people wanna retire and find a wife here but that's not the only thing Philippines can offer. There are misconceptions about women here. Foreigners thought Filipinas are submissive like any other asian countries do. Filipinas have values different from neighboring countries cause we have mix of west and east culture. Filipinas are family oriented like asians are and ambitious and confident like westerners are. They will not bow on you because are a man. They will like you because you are worthy husband.

Some of them have to leave the nest to find a better job and a better life but the one thing that haven't change is helping their families when they can. thats correct, most reasons people cant leave home is because its expenisve to move out. They are expected to have come here with high valued currency and capable of buying for a local woman at least a residential lot. What you are saying is not a culture but failed parenting plus illiteracy. No offense to women married to foreigners, but most women married by foreigners, especially those older expats, are uneducated women. People with a sense of pride, even poor people, don't rely on their family members. This is why education is very important... One of my brothers-in-law, a farmer, refused to take money from me and my siblings and only asked us to help finance his children's education if we had extra money. Now, he has two engineers, a teacher, and a seafarer. When prioritized, education can change everything. Those who rely on their family members for everyday needs have no plan for their future. Despite having 4 working professional children, my brother-in-law still works in the sugarcane field. He will be retiring this November.

just to give you context, the past Filipinos are mostly nomads. Thats why we have "bayanihan", where houses can be carried anytime theres a need to move. aside from that, the Philippine land is pretty rich, early people were originally farmers, they make a lot of kids to help with the farm, thats basically why the Philippines have extreme family ties... not to mention, in the past, wealth can be measured by the number of kids you have or how big your clan is.

It was my first time to travel overseas (I went to Taiwan btw) last May and I am finally getting why foreigners say we are warm or welcoming. The knowledge of English certainly helps a lot but I think we smile more often and are easier to get closer to? You can see this reflected even in the service business. I have a very small sample size but in the hotel we stayed at and restaurants we went to, the service people were polite but very curt in their interactions with customers. I am not sure if we Filipinos smile way too much or the Taiwanese smile very little. It made me appreciate our people more.

I miss my old country, we lived in the present, and overcame limitations with the spirit of bayanihan, helping each other resolve immediate problems. Abroad, you learn to anticipate road blocks as you have no back-up, and friends disappear when you need help. However, I have no regrets moving to America 🇺🇸 where I actually matured as an individual and responsible citizen. I am grateful for the life I made here, with many American angels along the way!

Everybody work but share always even in activities like going to church together, outings, parties or celebrations.Religion play a prt in boosting trust and enforcing faith that when troubles come, they will get assistance and help from the Lord; They live by wht they have and act each day according to what they have. They are filming this in BGC which is a very select area of the Philippines and by far the most modern area of the country. Of course it has the full look and feel of any modern city in the U.S., but that will get old quick if you're staying for any length of time. Once you venture out 10 miles (even less), it becomes much different. You are quickly reminded that you are in a different country, but not in a bad way. Yes, some very poor areas, but the look and feel quickly changes. Amazing experiences to have. If anything, do not get used to BGC area and embrace the Philippines for what it is.

I just got back from the Philippines. My third trip there. My wife was born and raised in Manila and came to the states when she was 13. We took our 11 year old daughter there (she's been the two prior trips as well). We stayed with my wifes family in Tagaytay. I love everytime we are there and can see us eventually retiring there. The people are so friendly and it very much feels comfortable for me when we visit.

What it is being a Filipino, we learn to respect from day 1. We were taught that way. Because of that all humbleness, caring and loving anyone makes us very strong individuals and proud of all accomplishments we possibly do. We love to feel welcomed. So thus we welcome others as well. For foreigners we welcome them the same as we welcome anyone else. Because in my own opinion it’s an obligation to make anyone accepted and not ignored. We have that satisfaction of helping others is a good feeling. And helping our own family is the best heart felt feelings ever. Maybe because as someone having nothing like me. Even people who have good-paying jobs, have their parents encouraging them to live at home, to save enough to buy a house, or to just have more savings, even if the kids are married and have kids. Parents in general like to have their kids close by. They like being involved with their kids new lives, to have some continuity, to help with rearing grandkids, doing things together, etc.

My wife and I live part of the year in BGC and part of the year in the US. There is a big difference between Detroit and BGC. For example, if you want to each at Japanese restaurant in Detroit, they are scattered all over the place. You need to drive to different suburbs to go to one. In BGC, where we live, if you google for Japanese restaurant, there are over two dozen that are within a 15 minute walking distance. That is not possible in Detroit or any major city in the US. Most people don’t realize this. That is why living in BGC is so different.

It is very confusing for some but Filipino is the National Language.Tagalog is just the foundation from which it was built upon. Bisaya is a language too largely spoken in Visayas and Mindanao. It's just that Filipino was declared the National Language earlier times. One good thing about Filipino (language) is you can use it anywhere in the Philippines. But learning Bisaya would 100% be helpful too.

Not all foreigners come to Philippines to mingle with the locals. They come here because they money has more value in the third world. Westerners like privacy. They not interested in having gay locals hit on them every 4 minutes. The female travelers are find it very creepy when every 4 minutes someone tells them they are so beautiful and that they should join the Miss Universe.

One thing id say about the philippines, for expats from any country, is that when it comes to judicial acts that concern visa/residency/owning condominium/part ownership of corporations/business is that it is very easy. There's tons of successful koreans/chinese/indians/americans here who came from nothing and built themselves up and have fully assimilated. That's the kind of freedom you get because after all, our constitution and laws are patterned after the US. You don't get that kind of opportunity in other places in asia, nor the worse antagonism that exists in other asian countries.

English is our 2nd language and its being taught to us since our pre school. The new generation now specially, most of the kids now speak better english because of youtube, a good number of population of the new kids now mostly dont speak tagalog and more fluent in english than our own language

Although these foreign expats are part of the reason why real estate prices are shooting up in the Philippines but hey! Im not complaining. They are welcome addition to the Philippine community. We just love all of them, especially the "good" ones with respect to our culture.

Family traditions in most countries in Asia has its extensive relationship common between the family and relative members but the family tradition in the Philippines is the most stressful one, why???Even distant members will always depend and cling on for any kinds of support at all times and seasons especially to those who earn big and well enough...

That's true. We have to cater to a foreigner by speaking in English for them to feel included in the group. Hence in the long run, it would be better, if one learns the local language.

I’m married to a Filipina for 31 years in the states and now our son is married to a Filipina also. I find them to be very compatible, fun, and sweet people. The way they treat people will make you love them. It’s the best country in Asia for an American and most westerners, from my experience. I can relate to the idea that they are similar enough to feel at home around them but different enough to be interesting and fun. This is the same for spouses also. You will always feel the magnetism yet they will be more compatible than any person you ever dated. Granted, you have to pick the right one, however this compatibility, combined with the nuances are gifts that keep on giving.

In the Province english is not popular like in the city and many do not speak it in the province. But you can still find people who can speak english in the province, just not as many in the city.
