14:00 the "paiseh piece' (paiseh = embarrassed). When sharing food, nobody wants to look like they are too hungry and ate the last piece :) I think we were brought up by our parents to appear shy/humble/kind, to be considerate and let others have it, otherwise its embarrassing.

@@Scottirulez From certain events that happened during WWII, it was speculated by certain individuals that he was a collaborator. It certainly looked that way from the description I've read. You may be able to Google for more info. Edit: "Hodobu" was a Japanese propaganda machine in Singapore during WWII. I quote from a government-friendly online publication: "During the Occupation, Lee Kuan Yew joined the Hodobu in 1943 as an English-language editor. He was tasked to run through the cables of Allied news agencies."
@aero.l
@aero.l Жыл бұрын
@@ScottirulezNo he didn't. Just because one held a job as a civil servant during the Occupation doesn't mean one was a collaborator. The definition of a "collaborator" was one that provided intelligence to aid the Japanese war effort, not one that carried out daily tasks based on their skill sets.

Well, let say if you don't dress well or not wealthy let's see how they treat you. I have been to Singaporean and my GF was Chinese and we didn't get a geniune help when we asked for suggestions or direction. When I was in Thailand two groups of Singaporean mistreated a group of Malaysian. I think what one or a few persons say doesn't mean much. You have to go there to truly experience it yourself.

It doesn’t really matter how you dress that much, sometimes we are either not really friendly / don’t really want to talk to strangers / may not know the info to suggest / or other reasons. It’s unfortunate you didn’t get the help you need depending on what you feel “genuine” is. At least for myself, I’ve helped a few people before about directions from the best of my knowledge.

Ya , fun conversation but let me do some correction. Okinawa does not belong to Japan , it was annexed by Japan. How to respect a country's culture & people when no sincere apology was given for her atrocities against countries in Asia , esp the Nanjing Massacre & Unit 731 where Chinese were used for some horrible experimentation. Till today , the Japanese have refused a sincere apology even trying to whitewashed her dark history. Some say Japanese are nice & kind but hey , you have not met real nasty ones. Don't get me wrong , there are many Japanese that are nice people. In my encounters with Japanese , they usually do not show you their displeasure , but they still will bow & smile. Sorry for being blunt & to the point. Btw , of course there are nice Japanese too & i love their sushi.

If I remember correctly, Mao Zedong already signed away all rights in exchange for monetary assistance from Japan! So, all other Asian can talk about Japanese atrocities, except prc!
