4:30, the double-sided tool is a great idea! I like the way you work, I would have no reservations letting you work on my scooter. I'm planning a similar job on my PCX150, it took me quite a while to get the right grease from Shell. It looks like the components on the TMAX are quite well-engineered, that probably explains why they last so long (I'm considering buying a 2008 with 189k kms) - long distance commuting and a FSH.

Good day, well, I obliterated my first belt today, it started running and sounding different, I noticed my tach flashing red, and I was turning 9500+ and nearly 50mph it was running nicely just before it sounded like a gunni pig in a garbage disposal, I guess it's due to the possible overheated belt, and the pressure of the 2k rpm spring,with base bearing. it wasn't the cheapest Kevlar belt, it was like $20, it also has taken out the variator, and bushings, I haven't really gotten into it yet, but it seemed to be doing ok, just before shreading the belt, I think I'm going to get a new 1.5k spring, and new variator and belt, and spares, it only lasted about 18hours! I'm going to Carry a belt and variator, and weights, with me, I usually do, and carry tools with me, I live in a small town, no taxi service, and everything is spread all over, and could be miles between , But if brake parts cleaner can be bad for the belt, I bet gasoline is also!?! I got gas on my belt the other day, maybe a hour run time ago, that could possibly been what killed it! That and if it got hot enough to cause the TQ spring to loose tension, I guess I was sort of asking for it! I guess I'll be doing this tomorrow!

I would take the driven pulley to a machine shop, and have new grooves cut into it, (if it was worn worse,) cleaning it up should be fine, but it should be easy for a shop to cut new grooves, either the same angle, or slight change of angle, I bought a new complete driven pulley set, with clutch, and swapped in a adjustable sheave, the shaft seemed like it was used, or it fell off a truck at the factory, it was a bit rough, I have thought about replacing it, the original needs bearings, it had no Grease in it, and the bearings making noise, I thought it was the clutch, so I replaced it all, with the adjustable sheave,
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 3 жыл бұрын
The problem is, when you pay a skilled machinist in a shop for their time, repair can cost more than replacement. There would be a lot of setup time in such an operation. Honestly, I'd try just the moveable half first.

@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 3 жыл бұрын
If it's just the axle (bolt) itself, all you need is the inside diameter of the wheel bearings that you're using (most commonly 10 or 12mm) and the distance between outsides of the front forks where the axle passes through. Length of the axle needs to be just a little longer than the outside fork dimension so you have enough threads for a nut. Thread pitch doesn't matter as long as you get a matching nut.

If it doesn't get installed the exact same way, it's not a big problem. TBH, I'm not 100% certain why Yamaha specifies it. I assume that it's about wear or vibration if things aren't clocked the same. It's easy enough to do, so no reason not to.

I tested for spark and didnt see any, what do you think I should try next, can I remove the new belt and try to start it? but I should still get spark with a possible wrong belt correct? TY so much

If you're not seeing spark, follow that path first. The belt should not prevent it from firing as long as it's not totally stopping the engine from turning over.

Dear 49ccScoot. Question. I recently purchased a Kymco AK550. As you know, this scooter is basically the bastard child of a Yamaha Tmax, and a BMW C650 Sport. This scooter tends to run out of air right around 85mph....though it WILL hit 115mph if you keep the throttle pegged. It just seems like my Scarabeo 500ie (with drpulley sliders, and larger rear tire) was MUCH quicker and faster on the highways. So far, this Kymco AK550 scooter is stock. Would it be worth installing a JCosta variator to this scooter? What about bigger Vstacks and an airbox? An aftermarket exhaust? If any changes...what order would you do them in? Thx from a big fan.
@49ccscoot
@49ccscoot 3 жыл бұрын
I actually don't have a lot of experience with performance mods on the big scoots because to me the gains are small for the amount of money that they cost. If I were in your situation, I would look for a community about the Kymco AK550. Find people with real experience on that specific model that can tell you what works and what doesn't. If you're lucky, something like different rollers/sliders to get the RPM in a different range will improve it without a lot of expense or maybe you'll find that there is some identified weakness for that model, like the variator or exhaust. I can tell you that for my TMAX, I could put thousands of dollars into big boring and cams and end up with a few HP. At that rate, I thought it would make more sense to trade in for a 650 or get a motorcycle if I had to have a lot more. This is coming from someone that loves to modify scoots, but there's a point where the dollars make no sense at all. Sorry this isn't the precise answer you'd like, but that's honestly how I would handle it with my own scoot.

Its funny that my rpms were higher with 25g sliders but they kept rolling inside vario so i had to put back rollers. Also there is some strange nosie like belt rubbing or slipping or something, that I can't figure out what is causing it. When i hear that sound usually around 35-4000 rpm i can feel the light vibration on the steering wheel it almost feels like I'm riding with a brake appiled. To add on this, the sound and the "brake effect" is amplified when I have a passenger sitting behind. And sometimes it disappeares when passenger leaves the scooter and I drive alone, but also sometimes when I'm alone sound is there just more quiet. This has me puzzled.

@@stefanjovanovic488 That is a huge swing in weight to have the same RPM most of the time. I've only changed weight by 4g max in my TMAX and even 1g was an obvious change. Are you certain that RPM was higher with 25g? Staying that close in RPM across 11g per weight, plus a stiffer spring that should increase RPM, seems like it would have to be RPM limited somehow. My first suggestion with issues suspected to be CVT related is to do a very thorough inspection of all CVT parts.

@@49ccscoot stock it was running ~4800 at woot. Dropping down to 28gsliders gave it 5500rpm,which would drop to 5000 once over 70kmh. Then i put in 25 sliders and it went to 6300 which again dropped to 5000 once over 70kmh. Then i put the spring and the drop was lowered to 5800rpm. Then i found out the sliders are rotating and causing that drop so i put in 21g rollers which would keep 6000 rpm througought with slight variations 100-200-300 rpm drop on 70 -80kmh. If I woot it from 30kmh it goes to 5500-5600 and not 6000. The struggle is real. I make peak power at 7200, and would love to achieve at least constant 6600. Should i consider dropping to 18,19g? I have seen tmaxes running 12g with a multivar. Which is around 66% of original weight. Thank you for your time and effort

@@stefanjovanovic488 If sliders are rotating, it sounds like they are the wrong size. That shouldn't happen. If you have spare rollers around that you could try removing weight to see if it works without spending more money. You would need to have a scale to keep them equal in weight though. If you can make them light enough, even half the weights that it uses could be enough (stagger them with whatever the lightest weights are that you have around). Easiest way for me is usually to drill the center of the insert in the roller larger or sometimes I take them out and cut their length down.

@@49ccscoot i have only 1 set of rollers and sliders unfortunately, a set is $70. Even more for sliders. Dimension for both is 30x20 , I read online that it happens to some scooters that they just rotate for some unexplainable reason. I took my rollers to some shop to reduce the weight to 21g it only cost me $10 so that's not that bad. I have to find somehow the crank blocking tool so i can remove things myself.

I haven't really checked it since it had the Peace Pipe on it and revved lower. At that point it was 40-50MPG. I think it should still do 40MPG.

That's pretty impressive how little wear is evident in the CVT, for so many miles. Did someone say turbo? 🤔🙈

I think it might have to do with the endless random CVT air filters everywhere! And how over-designed everything is! In my 139QMB transmission, it's literally just a metal plate that covers the crankshaft and the rear axle with the variator and the clutch. No air filters or anything, and I guess the maintenance interval is shorter because of it. I'll take ease-of-maintenance over maintenance interval length any day of the week, though

WRONG!.64mm wont work.Must be .50mm.The low-rev F1 ferrari in 50-60-ties had "an extra 5 degree angle to 65,because of carbu.And ignition "55 degree(??) off".

You're trying to teach the wrong guy about 2Ts. I hate to say this, but, believe it or not, sometimes you have to do what makes sense. Being 40+ and big with past broken bones does not lend itself well to 12 hour non-stop rides on sportbikes. I rode the TMAX 14 hours one day and the knee that I broke in a crash was really bad by the time I was on the way home, so I can only imagine how everything would feel on a sport bike.

I try to use Bando belts when I can. I tried Bando kevlar, but they didn't outlast standard Bando belts when I was having trouble busting belts on a non-OR CVT.
