I enjoy your brief geology lectures. I am a geologist myself and know that such stories are almost everywhere you go. Good that you incorporate them. And Canadian shield should be especially good area for them as interesting rocks are well exposed. As for the survival challenge, it was well made. Seemed authentic which I cannot say about many other similar videos. Batteries dying also added to that feeling actually. My GoPro batteries often stop working as soon as temperature drops below freezing.

@maximbudnick6 сағат бұрын
Hey Peter! Honestly it went as well as it could have with the weather - a little stronger wind and it would have been exponentially more difficult. Also, I avoided anything even remotely risky with travelling over frozen water (as requested by Thais). So I won't take too much credit here, but you are right that it is a very serious temperature not to be taken likely... I don't feel invincible in any way and had a very well planned out survival/exit strategy if things took a bad turn (mainly my wife keeping an eye on my GPS location - watching my little pin move around the map collecting wood all night, and a solid familiarity with a miserable but survivable hike back to the car...). I think best credit I can take here is not that I survived these conditions, but that I prepared myself to be safe even if conditions had taken a bad turn - can't let that guard down! Anyway now I'm rambling at you... Of to other comments! Thanks for watching buddy and hope you are loving the new year!

I was out for a walk in Markham last week in our cold...-12C windchill -20 and was thinking about you guys up there in those temps! Cold cutting my eyes out in only the teens. One mistake out there, one gear fail and it suddenly becomes real. I did a 50/50 fail/success winter camp at only -10 c low and what scared me was I could not tell at all what the temp was once it went below zero, but I'm sure it makes a big difference what it is every 5 degrees.

I always enjoy outdoor channels in extreme weather. I'm going to offer advice, on the internet, and I know exactly what that is worth. The thing that needs to be emphasized here is energy retention. The key to surviving brutal sub-zero, is heating up rocks. The fire, and subsequent heatsink rocks should have been placed close to the back wall and all of them heated slowly. Move the fire to the outside at bedtime, and enjoy the stored energy benefit the entire night from the heated fieldstones and boulders. I have slept comfortably at -40 C doing these things. Frankly, I'm surprised you're not aware of this method. It should be your foremost plan of action.
@maximbudnick2 сағат бұрын
That was my initial plan but I honestly didn't stop moving enough to get cold. I think with more wind or colder temps this is what ill do. Thanks for sharing your valuable experience. Much appreciated and please feel free to critique any time. Cheers

Hell of a lot of trees cut down …
@maximbudnick2 сағат бұрын
Hey there, Mia! There are ways to harvest trees without harming them. The lower leaves on these types of trees always die (its the natural process - the lower leaves don't get as much sun so the tree prefers to let them die rather than spend energy keeping them alive), so you can take the lowest leaves knowing that those leaves are dying soon. You can take dead standing wood (which is almost everything you see in my videos). In such a remote area you will not be taking enough to have an negative impact (because there are not several other people dong the same as is the case in a well used campsite). And to take a live tree, you go to where several of them are sprouting in clump - only the strongest in a clump will survive - so you can take the others and actually give the tree destined to survive an advantage - think of how plants get pruned to promote their faster/bigger growth. Of course I don't have all the answers, but I work hard to have the knowledge of how to be a fair guest in nature. Thanks for watching, and for looking out for the trees! Cheers

I’m warm an snug at home(where an old guy should be) and I find it remarkable that you have the skills and talents to work and camp overnight at that temperature! Congratulations
