A Rivian service center employee told me that conserve is best for long flat roads. He recommended staying in all purpose if you're going up or down hill. He also said it may be beneficial on the descent to switch to low regen. Sounds counterintuitive but he said it allows you to regen more and longer before the heat builds up and it actually keeps you out of the accelerator. Great video, thanks for all the data!

That’s really interesting info! I’ve definitely run into situations where the regen maxes out - I’ll have to try switching it to low and see how that works👍🏻

@@ChargeOverland He also said it's much better for your tires. I guess using just the front motors to move a 7000lb truck up and down big hills can cause some premature wear 😅

@@ChargeOverland This might sound nerdy because it require another full set of wheels that need to be stored in garage, (in a shed, barn or at home somewhere) and it might be tedious and time consuming.. But it will save a lot of energy specially on longer distances, if the vehicle will be used mostly on paved roads it would be beneficial to have the factory stock all season tires (19" or 20") and when you know you will go off-road switch to the more aggressive off-road wheels and switch them back to all-terrains as soon as possible after the off-road session.. Safe trips enjoy your Rivian vehicles try out this everyone and prove me wrong !

Great info. I can appreciate the amount of time and effort that went into this video. Rivian, if you'r watching, please give us an airport/storage mode where we don't have to second guess what is the optimal setting for leaving the truck parked for a week or two. Thanks

Turning on the outlets turns on the inverter which consume power even if no load. Depending on efficiency of the inverter they can consume 5-10 watts at idle.

Man I am really impressed with your channel, thank you for putting out quality content for those of us interested in Rivian. I didn't know about Stay-Off mode and the tire pressure test was insightful. I can't wait to pick up my R1T next week! Thumbs up.

All great info. I have over 27k miles on my Rivian now in about 7.5 months. Prob 90% of this mileage is highway commuting ~160mi, 4 times a week. For those commute drives, I use conserve in the standard ride height and as soon as I'm off of the highway I go back to AP. Personally I have experienced even tire wear front to back (have only rotated tires twice so far) even with using conserve mode a ton but I think that is because I am setting it once I'm up to speed and never using it on surface (stop and go) streets. YMMV.
@ChargeOverland

Seems like if you keep it in conserve for highway only that’s the best way to go👍🏻

I love Rivian and hope to have my own in a 2-3 years, but I was a bit surprised to see that they do not have a heat pump engineered yet for their vehicles. I've read some articles saying they are looking into adding one, and if so, that will certainly help lessen range loss in colder temps and you have the heat on.

Power inverters have an idle power consumption regardless if something is plugged in or not. It's probably in the 50-100 watt range for the Rivian.

Do you recommend driving in conserve mode during road trips to extend the range, but otherwise to keep it in all-purpose to save the front tires from wearing out?

I am rarely getting over 2 miles per KWH living in NorCal over last 6 months. Rarely had freezing temps. Cannot even imagine seeing a 3 miles per KWH. And I am not very fast or aggressive driver usually in all purpose, sometimes on freeway Conserve.
@ChargeOverland

Interesting to hear that! Do you live in a hilly area? What mi/kWh are you generally seeing?
@openmind6969

@@ChargeOverland sacramento is not really hilly. I understand when I am driving to mountains it’s different. I drive to Bay Area once per week from Roseville to Hayward and around Bay Area and back and average 2 miles per kWh. Measured on a trip it was 1.9 miles per kWh and 39mph average for 304 mile round trip.

Apparently tire wear increases in low mode- it messes with the camber.

Can you comment on your general battery drain while the truck is parked? I’ve heard about Rivians having an issue with this. I have a Volvo EV and I can leave the car parked for days and the batter % just stays right where I left it. That’s important to me since I travel for work and may leave my car parked at the airport for days at a time.

Fellow R1T owner here, it varies but most owners see 1-5% loss per 24 hours when the vehicle is parked and not in “camp” or “shipping” mode. Turning off Gear Guard, HVAC, proximity unlock can all help these numbers.

From what I have read this is also temperature dependent. For example, in cold climates Rivian was activating the Driver+ radar and front facing camera defrosters which would draw continuous power under 55F. This was discovered using thermal imaging cameras. This seems to have been fixed with the latest update. Another issue was with the frunc latch preventing the vehicle from entering sleep mode. Also fixed with the latest software update. Third was an issue with phone-as-a-key proximity preventing the vehicle from sleep, and fourth,I believe there were issues with periodic waking for telemetry and app check-ins (e.g. Spotify and AWS calls) that were obviously draining power. No idea if the last two issues have been addressed, but they are correctible with software updates if RIvian chooses to put the time and effort into power management software.

Some great comments and info here already from a few people! I’m seeing anywhere from 1-3% with my truck but it seems to depend on quite a few factors that have been mentioned in the other comments 👍🏻

@@openmind6969 it's likely just driving style and environment. It's not an efficient vehicle by nature.
