Yes She Is!

When Kerry was a college kid, she was chosen to play Lorraine Hansberry in a production for Horizons Theater in DC, a feminist theater. In a series of productions, the theater brought women in different historical eras together, had them interact in an alternative reality space and had the actors take questions from the audience as their characters. When she came in, I saw a fantastically beautiful, sweet, smart kid. We had decided to set our Hansberry toward the end of her life at 36 while she was dying of cancer. I went to the director and asked if we were changing Hansberry's age. She said, "no." I expressed doubt that this amazing kid could play the dying uber intellectual great soul at age 36. The director told me that I'd find out. I got Kerry large amounts of writings, videos, and recordings. The next rehearsal, the actors were to come in as their characters so we could develop the scripts. When Kerry came in, she was an uncanny reincarnation of a world weary Hansberry. Hansberry's humor, vocabulary, and soul was fully embodied. It was one of the most stunning theatrical moments I experienced.
