My last video reviewed the still-available Maxitronix 60-in-1 Electronics Lab and demonstrated it with some simple AM radio projects. Today I'll use it to build some simple amateur projects including a very short range 160m AM transmitter and a BFO for SSB reception on 160, 80 & 40m.

Hey Peter, try making a 455 KHz oscillator by loading the tuning capacitor and coil on your circuit. I made one of those as a BFO to work with an old car radio that I modded to tune 2-5 MHz. Worked really well to tune 80 & 160 Ham bands as well as the old marine broadcasts and 2182 traffic. I then had the fun of turning it into a broadcast transmitter that just appeared on all the radios in the house no matter where you tuned

A few memories. It certainly helps you learn and demonstrate electronics.

That brings back good memories, had these electronic kits from Tandy , here in the UK some 48 years ago.

Love it Peter. I had a Science Fair 150 in 1 when I was a kid and it’s AM transmitter was exactly the same as this circuit. When tuned right onto the frequency it’s modulation was much less than if you tuned slightly off frequency.

Thats because the modulation is AM and FM in this oscillator

Great fascinating video AB9EW next you should do a video single side band and 10 meter FM

👍Good stuff Peter, thanks. This kit is actually quite a nice/easy way to expirement. Easier, perhaps, than using components on solderless breadboard. A QRP radio orientated version with some XTALs and other basic TX/RX components for HF would be fun.

Peter I linked you video to my FL based club Signal group. Someone came back and said W5JI Joe is usually on 7.158 mornings here so that may be exactly where you were hearing him.

foer i like this video fun with ham radio. Take the rf off the Collector thu a cap and coil (not on the kit) for rf tuning of the antenna? Replace the 160 ohm with the coil or transformer?

To my understanding, reducing resistor value will allow more current to flow through the circuit , which therefore will increase power output maybe??? Forgive me if im wrong as im only an amateur in electronics.

To a point, yes. But then if too low there can be excessive current and you can blow the thing up.

@@vk3ye very true. Just got to tweak it or find the "sweet spot" for the resistor. BTW any thoughts on how to create a HOME MADE SHORTWAVE RECEIVER DOING IT THE OLD PLANK OF WOOD SCREW DOWN STYLE?

@@AirwolfBadarse Thanks. See my website vk3ye.com for some receiver ideas. Other videos have projects mounted on wood bases - eg some of my AM and FM transmitters.

Massive increase in complexity for more than milliwatts out and more difficult to get random contacts compared to 40m.
