I have had a Max Jax for about ten years. There were numerous problems. The first thing to fail was the pump leak. The next was a cylinder seal leak. The next was one side would raise higher than the other. Fortunately these were under warranty and replaced but it caused a lot of aggravation. One side raising higher than the other appeared to be solved by a pressure adjusting valve put on one side. After the warranty expired I have had two more cylinder leaks. The only hydraulic repair in this area replaced the seals but they still leaked and he said it wasn’t the seals but something like a sleeve that he couldn’t get. Bend Pak bought out Max Jax and you would think would have excellent service, but it is terrible. The people you talk to have absolutely no experience in this product. You can’t get any parts for a Max Jax, you have to buy the new part. The price for a Max Jax now is astronomical.

Thank you so much for your demonstration . Having an 8 ft. ceiling in my garage makes it a perfect solution and with the appropriate seat height makes it more useful . I'm so tired of jacking up my cars and trucks and having to put jack stands under them which makes me so tired even before I start to work on them ,it is the perfect solution ,thank you again for answering all my questions and actually showing your set-up .

Nice modifications to the install, hoses over ceiling , 90 degree fitting etc. It is amazing to how many people have better way to do things. You did what you had to do in the the space you have. You did a great job!

lol, my grandfather made a 3' scissor lift out of old tractor hydraulics. I'm so lucky and grateful i got all his machines (lathe, mill, drill press) and tools when he past, then i got all my fathers when he past. P.S. when building a garage, trust me, go bigger..!! always x2 it..! i built a 30x40 had to build a 20x20 just to house some of the machines. good luck and stay safe

Jake, your how-to is seriously impressive. I especially love that you list all the details to make it so easy for me to do the same install - thanks!!! I have a 2013 Alpina B7 xDrive, so not a racecar, but a great beast for long trips. I'm about to do a number of tasks: valve stem seals, new downpipes, Dinan Cold Air Intake, and their Stage II piggy-back tune. Anyway, a lift is a must to get under the car. thanks again.

Do make sure to check what kind of concrete slab you have in your garage before you commit to this type of lift. You might want to avoid purchasing this lift if you happen to have a post tension slap. You don’t want to go drilling in to this type of foundation unless you know what you’re doing, it could be dangerous, do your research! You could find a contractor who has experience drilling in to this type of slab, but most wont. The hassle of finding a professional to perform this work, and the extra cost associated with it, might not make this the right lift for you. You don’t want to end up with pallet in the middle of your garage trying to figure out if to return it or sell it at a loss, or worst, end up in the hospital cos you drilled where you shouldn’t. P.S. To find out if you have a post tension slab look around your garage. There should be a stamp (usually close to one of the corners) letting you know you do.

Hi Jake I was happy about how awesome your Max Jax lift is. I don't have much room in my garage. I basically have to work out side. Before I saw your video installation and review I was contemplating extending my one car garage out a little and widen it just a little. After seeing your lift I am sold on getting one of my own. I've had one of these lifts for several years now. It was really well worth the investment whether you want the prestige or actually use it regularly. I never saw you make sure the hoist posts were plumb and parallel. The instructions were really intent on that. I also made several modifications to mine. One being the same custom hydraulic hose and wall mount setup. Then I drilled the posts to accept more safety positions. I also attached some "trays" to the posts to store the lifting pad extensions. I also got some set screws to plug the concrete anchors when it is not in use. I use some cheap conduit through the topmost holes in the posts from which to hang the lift arms when not in use. I have never used the E-clips to hold the pins in which hold the arms onto the posts. Before the custom hose setup, I laid the hoses on the floor. I did the stupid thing of running them over, because the pump setup wouldn't work in the front of the car well and that is where my tools are and stuff. Disconnecting the hoses and wrapping them up wasn't really an option in anything below 40 degrees because the Chinesium hose they supply you with wouldn't flex. The hose survived getting run over dozens and dozens of times, but the problem was when the salt water flowed down the slab to where the hose lay, and running over the hose must have microscopically damaged the sheathing and let the salt in to rust out the steel braids in the hoses. Yes, I had one blow out on me while I had a Buick up as high as it could go on the hoist, before I got the chance to get the safety bars in. I narrowly saved it from disaster by letting it down right away. I always pull the manual release on the garage door when I have a car in the way of it. Under no circumstances do I not do this, because I will, (and have), forget one day.

I work on aircrafts, we use driver car seats on top of a rolling frame, then you can recline and work nicely underneath the engine, or in your case your car. as I am writing this you brought in the creeper, its like that only more comfortable. and since its a car seat you can adjust your recline depending on the job. great video!

Not true
@PandemoniumMeltDown
@PandemoniumMeltDown 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamesgregory7699 Indeed. The lift specs mention the min tensil strenght of the concrete (around 3000psi) and the min thickness. A drill test should be done at the ancrage position to get a proper reading of the precise thickness of the concrete under the lift. (mark the minimum thickness on the bit and hope not reaching the end of the concrete before the mark) It should also be stated that the concrete should contain rebar, steel mesh and be fiber reinforced. The rebar should be installed with the position of the lift ancrage bolts in mind or, found beforehand in order to avoid it while drilling. Weakness lines should also be made to "force" where the concrete will crack to avoid said crack to occur where the ancrages are and in order to preserve the minimal required surface area (within the aforementionned specs) for the posts feet. Better think twice and before :D

I have the newer M-6 model of the MaxJax for a little over 3 years now and haven't had any issues with the lift. The anchors holds up very well and you can even opt to purchase the Epoxy Grip Anchor Bolt Kit if you're worry about the anchors popping out. I've jacked all sorts of vehicles from 2000lbs to 5000lbs with no issues at all but I would advise caution when lifting up box frame trucks because the truck will rock around a lot more. I personally refuse to lift up anything that isn't a unibody chassis.

Maybe if you can manually partially open the door you can let the sunlight in . I use the extensions on the lift pads & still have roof space. @@jake_spence well, it wouldnt be difficult to reinstall in a new location. Then just fill the old holes with some concrete filler, then paint over the filled holes and it's like they were never there. Now that it's been some time, how are you liking that lift? Once I build a shop I plan to do a lift but I am going to do an in floor lift so I have more room to work around the vehicle when it's up in the air. Will also allow me to put some steel plates over the lift when it's all the way down so I dont have the lift in the way if i need the shop space for something else or if i needed the have the doors open on a car for a stereo install or interior work. I'm only planning on building a 20'x30' shop so i wont have enough room. I also plan to use the shop as a storage space for my boat during the winter till i got around to building a large covered car port on one side or the other that will ultimately be the dedicated boat parking area. It will just be a 12'x30' covered area that will have a back and side wall, but open in the front. It wont be insulated or have a front door, it's just to keep the boat out of the elements during the winter and will have some outlets so I can plug in a battery tender and bilge heater. I'll probably also install some lights. I may not even do a concrete pad and just do gravel as it will strictly be used for boat and/or vehicle storage. Hope everything is working out well with the lift you installed

at 8:09 you are about to drill into the floor. The open hydraulic fitting is right there to catch that cement dust. One killer of hydraulics is contaminants. Then at 9:39 you left the dust cap on the other fitting.

As others have mentioned, concrete slabs come in different grades...Most are not designed to withstand heavy loads...and many contractors hire laborers who do not follow the correct procedures when pouring concrete, which can result in weak concrete strength or microcracks... Just wonder if you have a SUV/truck, how high can you lift with this Maxjack? Will a Quickjack be a better way of doing the lift?

@@jake_spence yes thats what i thought .. regardless its dope , love the videos man .. how its the 335i coming along ? Thanks! The 335i is slowly coming together. I've been busy tinkering with the 135i and installing this lift, but the 335i will get more attention again soon. I think you can daily a single turbo N54 no problem, but it is an expensive route. Sucks that these stock turbos are so hit or miss.

Jake Spence honestly, 115k miles on original turbos on my 6spd 2007 335i, the wastegate rattle is getting kind of bad but it doesn’t leak boost or burn any oil whatsoever, cold or hot, imo they only start to smoke if the owner doesn’t let the oil get up to temp before getting into boost, I try not to go anywhere until its at least up on the gauge and even then I roll slow, short shift at about 2500 and lower until it’s up near op Temp. When its finally time I’m going for a twin upgrade, direct fit good for 600ish hp, until then it’s fully stock for the time being but it still spins 265 nt555’s in a straight line in second if its even slightly damp

If I used a longer sacrificial bolt I could theoretically go deeper than 4.5"if the hole was deeper...? My 10" thick slab has a slope to it so I need to go deeper than 4.5" on one side of the columns to get them perfectly vertically plumb.

@jake_spence
@jake_spence 5 жыл бұрын
It must be 4-inch minimum thickness concrete, with a minimum strength of 3000 psi. If you drill a test hole, you will find out how deep your concrete is. If it's not deep enough, you'll want to repour stronger concrete around those two post areas.

Yes, do the pull out test before he order. Your life depends on it. Apply some simple math to determine the pull strengt of the lift for the holding screws measuring the force arms and the maximum load. Ask a company to make a pull test for you, they have the necesary equipment to do the pull and measure the pull force until the anchor or the concrete give it up. Couple of test holes should be drilled. Carefully select the places of the holes, it could break chunks out of the floor, you need to restore the floor after the test. Identical anchores should be used (order them first before order the jack) and do the pull test. Use the smallest result form the pull test. If the lowest pull test result is two - three times higher than the calculated pull force for ONE screw than we can say you are safe to go. If still worried than use a custom cross bar between the two poles disabling the inward collapse of the lift. Apply it after reaching the required height and remove it before lowering the lift.

This looks nice. What is the strength of your concrete mix? How thick is the floor? What does the manufacturer recommend for pier sizing to support the lift for full capacity lifting? Drilling in concrete is not the same as wood or steel, not as precise.
