I’m a professional fireman and this is the tool I carry at work. I had a gerber mp600 and didn’t love it. I went with this and I love it. I’ve had it for a few years now and the only thing I wish it had was a file probably rather than the serrated blade. It works great with or without gloves on. I wouldn’t carry this off duty do to size but for getting work done, this thing is excellent.

I'll be honest and say I'm not a contractor, not military or first response or anything, just your average civi and loved this. I used it pretty much every day for random jobs, from opening packaging, parcels, to cutting rope. I lost mine a couple of years ago and have missed it very much. I'm finally paying one off and will have another soon. Also the serrated blade is razor sharp.

I got one of these when they came out. I loved it. I forgot it in my pocket and got it confiscated at a TN airport. The old timer said they donated them to the scouts lol. Got 2 since then. Any of the shortcomings it had I already had a few other small tools in my work bag anyway. I hope they do a V2 in the future with a bit driver and a more robust cleaning rod thread in the frame.

I have had this for years. The hook broke almost immediately. I have used it every day sense I bought it. Honestly if I could do one thing I would ditch the blade all together and put in like a scissors. I already carry a dedicated knife and don't need another one. Also you missed the 10-32 screw hole for a bore brush. That actually comes in handy sometimes.

I actually really liked this tool. It’s my edc for work because the belt cutter works great for boxes and hate using those dumb safety box cutters from my job. I can’t even find online. Luckily found it in a store. Also glad I’m not the only one with the serrated blade rubs up against the handle. Mine has that mark too at 5:01 . I thought I had a defective one.

This was originally made for first responders, hence the oxygen tank wrench. It was never to appeal to the “mass market.” The saw is actually to cut a windshield with if you have to, you don’t need a long blade for that.

I don't understand why they didn't overlap the long and short tools the way Victorinox does. It would be hard with the saw but easy with the plain and serrated blades.

@SmilingGator96
@SmilingGator96 3 жыл бұрын
The center drive came out after the OHT. Like, years after. If this was created to compete for military contracts with Gerber, Gerber won due to price point. The MP600 isn't an expensive tool. In fact, I believe it costs between $40-60 on the retail market. Which would probably be double what the pentagon would've paid for them. They just underbid Leatherman.

It’s a decent tool but I do have minor gripes with it. The biggest one is that it pinches my hand like a Wave/Charge. I’d love to see an OHT V2 with bigger tools. There is no reason they couldn’t have made the tools bigger and just overlapped them a bit like they do on the SAKs

@@maxlvledc As far as I know, the budget tools from Leatherman (Wingman, Sidekick, Rev, and Bolster) are made in a different factory so perhaps that factory is still able to run as normal. The OHT and Crunch are specialty tools so it is likely that less of them are made than the more common tools (Surge, Wave, Supertool 300, Rebar) so the remaining stock of them has depleted while there is still a large leftover stock of the other tools. I imagine the Mut and perhaps even the Signal might run low on stock. There are so many versions of the Charge that it makes sense that they would run low on those as well. The Free series of tools was such a huge thing (regardless of whether people like it) that Leatherman probably has a huge amount of those left to sell especially since they introduced the color options. I could see why they would get rid of the OHT if that is what is actually happening since the Free Series shares a similar purpose (although I think the OHT was made to be used with gloves).

While Leatherman are renowned for their excellent quality and customer service I really can't see myself ever picking something like this over a Gerber. They pioneered the OTF pliers and it's basically their trademark at this point. I'd take a traditional butterfly-opening Leatherman over a Gerber any day but if I needed one-hand pliers an MP600 would win hands down.

There are a couple of tools on there that I would gladly trade for a standard 1/4" bit driver. I don't know why Leatherman clings so tightly to their proprietary bit driver, I don't want to be married to their crappy bits or having to carry a separate standard driver that slots into their proprietary drive. Nice review, thanks.

I have a love hate view of these, I have one and do carry it. I am on call SAR and work in convinced spaces and do a lot or rope work. The small knife really isn't an issue, it's the same as an MP400 and MP600 and only about ¼" less than a 91mm Victorinox so its perfectly functional but the true is I never use it I would happily just keep the serrated knife as I am most likely to need to cut rope or webbing. Although I would happily go without either as I carry a separate knife anyway. I have never used the saw and think a file would be more useful, as getting buts of kit that have been knocked and need a burr taking off is far more common that needing to cut a small stick. I but if you did away with both blades you could have a file and saw or a file and scissors. I would also put the large screwdriver o the rescue hook and get rid of the oxygen wrench to make a stronger pry/cut tool and then the medium screwdriver would fit in small screw holes better without the hook in the way. The PH2 cams out loads which is disappointing. But I love that it has a can opener on it, I am kn 24/7 call so being able to open food is good. The main reason I carry a multitool is for the pliers and they are really good, very smooth and strong. Unfortunately they missed the mark with most of this tool and it's not very easy to open and close the outside facing tools, although much easier than a regular multitool. When it brakes, and with my experience of leatherman it will brake, I will just get another MP600. I carry it with a Victorinox Rescue tool which is great, although would be better without the glass saw. So I have a good utility knife, rescue knife, big screwdriver/pry tool and very good PH2 screwdriver. The OHT just needs to be pliers, smaller screwdrivers and can opener for me and it dose all that pretty well.

The oht/crunch/ and any other specialized MT leatherman makes is being cut because they cost more to make (with less interchangeable parts unlike the wave, rebar, signal, surge, supertool, etc) so they are switching over to the cheaper side of manufacturing (reusable tool set for multiple different products) and are no longer innovating. That and Gerber sells way too many mp600 for the OHT to make sense. It never came close to the sales Gerber made, even from the civilian market.

Here's the problem with companies like Leatherman and Gerber they tried to throw every Bell whistle light and anything else that they can into a product instead of going and asking the people that actually use their products literally multiple times a day and configuring the product to the customers wants and needs everything nowadays has to have a can opener or some kind of doodad little tiny screwdriver that 90% of us aren't using for like this multi-tool it's humongous compared to everything else and yet a Swiss tinker knife blade is probably bigger which to the customer does not give confidence in the company's ability to be able to think and produce the things that really neither consumer want in a product

In all reality it was because of a law passed in 1970’s when everything was being moved overseas. Go to Gerber Knives Made in The USA 🇺🇸 you will see a little flag, made in the USA and Berry Compliant. That is how Gerber keeps the contact. Plus they made the very first military multi tool then they made everything the DOD wanted at the cheapest price knowing that sales to non military would make them millions. The all time number one ☝️ Multi Tool is the MP600 with the sales to the DOD and non military. They build them by thousands and you get one issued to you whenever you deploy. Also it’s KISS keep it simple stupid anyone can work it or any of the other military multi tool line up.
