you should really test this out on a lower gain head, like maybe a jcm 800 or plexi to make a non metal amp do metal. Because in this video the best sound is no boost

The 'block letter' 5150 definitely has a less 'soggy' gain saturation than other 5150s. I've found that with most other iterations of this amp, that much gain is too 'billowy' and the only way to get a beautiful chugging feel and sound is with a boost in front. Nice review man. Loving that red OD808X!

Have you A/B the 808 vs the 820? That is where I am right now in life trying to decide.
@kittyvlekkie8 жыл бұрын
i have done that, it kinda depends on what you want your tone to sound like. Like what would you want to know? I could also help you if you give an example tone which you would want to sound like.
@1980hardhitter8 жыл бұрын
+Daniël Kortekaas well the 808 beat my TS9 because it was tighter and more transparent. I hear people say the OD820 is even more transparent and also sucks less bass out of your tone?
@kittyvlekkie8 жыл бұрын
Guitar Lover When i tried OD pedals, i didnt like the ibanez pedals. True, I have an orange Rockerverb II with an orange 4x12, which makes for a(if you want) bassy combo. With the level knob of the OD-820 it *feels* like it also controls the bass, the higher, the more hardhitting, tight bass.(ofc at full it gets flabbier(which also sounds cool, its just messier)). I like to keep the drive and level knobs around 9'o clock. I could notice those things(transparancy and more bass) with gain but were really obvious in blues tones. With the maxon OD-808's, especially with the red one, i noticed a very strong cut in bass, which sounded weird when the pedal was performing harder(drive/level) and the treble also felt messy. Also, it just distorts really differently from the OD-820, the OD-820 feels rather soft-clipping distortion(which pairs well with my orange)(ofc it can still give a lot of gain). The OD-808 felt rather hard clipping and would always have a fizzle on top, the OD-820 doesn't have that. So yeah, the OD-820 is more transparent and lets in more bass if you want to. I like the OD-820 much more because it works very well on both my clean and dirty channel with different amounts of gain and is very responsive with the subtleties in your playing. the OD-808 is pretty okay for metal(with my amp, that is) but i really didn't like it when the gain got lower than AC/DC type levels.
@rickarnett87588 жыл бұрын
Now THATS how you use an OD...I have to agree on the OD808...Most balanced and most transparent. As long as you have Kevin @ Godlyke on the line...Id love to see your review of some of the TWA pedals in a metal setting...Such as the Triskelion, Lil Dipper and the Great Divide. Also...do you have any insight on the JCM900 Series? Just picked up a 4502 50w 212 on the cheap. Thanks so much for the content...I love your style and tone!!!

In the mix the difference was very subtle. The biggest differences in the mix that I heard were the ST9 Pro+ and the TB-09. The TB-09 did something to the low end that was interesting. Soloed I heard a difference with all the pedals, even if it was subtle.

808X for sure, keeps the power but gives a bit of a percussive flavour to it, really dig it. Also anyone saying they couldn't hear the difference, it might be time to invest in some new headphones, since it was clear for me, and I'm not using expensive headphones either, these where like £15.

Well, what I want to say ... I tested it today in 2 hours jam BOSS SD1WAZA and 808Maxon, the conclusion is as follows: I drew attention to the comments on KZbin and did not attach importance, but in vain. it said that BOSS SD1WAZA works like a clean-boost WITHOUT CHANGING THE AMPLIFIER ITSELF (if we say exactly as a heating pad with the maximum volume will and no gain) - and this turned out to be correct !!! Indeed, I enjoyed the trademark Triple Rectifier overdrive without changing the gain - everything remained characteristic. At the same time, the BOSS SD1WAZA (by ear) has the same volume for 3 hours as that of the 808, and then more: by about + 5-8 Db! AND AT THIS WORKS LIKE A CLEANBUSTER without the additional feeling of adding sand. What does 808 give us: with the gain knob not twisted, but the twisted volume, a "white background" as I call it, or rather high-frequency sand, is added and it changes the characteristic color of the lamp, introducing an additional over to the sound. I really (now) don't like it ... In the "standard" position, the BOSS SD1WAZA loses to the maxon by the absence of the lower middle, but switching to the "custom" position, the lower end becomes ORDERLY higher than that of the 808, and to those already +5/8 Db, about 5 / 8Db is added, which as a result incredibly cool accelerates / boosts amp. Bottom line: I am immensely pleased with the purchase of the BOSS SD1WAZA !!! 808 has lost this fight! Proof of this can be found in this video from 3:28 to 3:38. Thanks for the video bro!

I think some of the comments might be going a little overboard with the mix critique. But on my laptop speakers, the only pedal that stood out was the ST-9 Pro+. I'm not saying all pedal shootouts should only be done with a Fender DRRi or a 65 Amps SoHo like Pro Guitar Shop does, as not everyone has those amps (nor is it very realistic in a metal setting), but this shoot out only demonstrated one thing: the 5150 is just fine on its own!

the OD820 has Klonish quality to it. I have to agree with lawngnome, though. The mix hides the subtle differences. That being said, while playing on stage, I get more feel out of hearing those subtle differences come to life when I step on my Klon for a nice boost. It doesn't matter to me if the audience hears it. As long as I can hear and feel it, it all comes out in the performance.

+hyperliteBo You are not ^^ Speaks for the quality of Fluffs "vanilla" tones. If I had to choose one, I'd take the 808, it just seems to clean up the woofiness and makes the guitars sit better with the bass.
@lionheartstudios2518 жыл бұрын
+hyperliteBo when the guitar is playing by itself outside of the mix without the overdrive on it has a more enhanced low end. I know I myself as well as a lot of other players use their overdrive to boost your mid and give you cut in the mix so it sounds counterintuitive sometimes it will sound more pleasing without the overdrive when your just jamming but in the grand scheme of things it will really open everything up in a recording
@schlagdog8 жыл бұрын
Yep. Way too much gain. Just sounds like a fuzz pedal shootout.
@hyperliteBo8 жыл бұрын
+Lionheart Studios Nah, I'm also a home recorder and while I obviously highpass my guitars, I tend to leave a fair amount of low end in them. I find that in some metal mixes there is a "gap" between the bass and guitars (if that makes sense). Yeah sure they both sound articulate and detailed then but I sometimes miss some oompf in the low mids. Also in this mix I like the guitar without boost more. But if fluff used the same highpass filter on all of the tracks in post, it may influence the results since a tubescreamer tends to do most of the highpassing for you BEFORE it's recorded.

The OD808x added a nice upper mids attack and the TB-09 added a nice growly low end to the guitars. To me tho the OD820 in a mix didn't add anything to the guitar sound at all. on it's own it did but not in a full mix.
