The goddess of pop! As her career developed, I think Akina's lyrics were often deeper and more passionate/emotional than standard idol pop music. So maybe that's why it stands out! It seems like a signature quality of her music. With eye-catching stages and outfits (outfits which she often designed!), the passion and emotion in her eyes, Akina brought dramatic flair to her performances too. It's an awesome combination. Yes, I think it was because of her rocky relationship with Masahiko Kondō which lead to her suicide attempt in 1989. The lyrics were related to her life during that time.

このバージョンは少しダンスが控えめな感じですね。 明菜ちゃんの面白い所は新曲発表から少しずつ振り付けが変化していって、最終形態になった時にはかなり激しいものに変わって行く所なんですよ！ この曲はコンサートになるとステップまで激しくなってとても好きなんです。

I'm from the US and lived in Japan for almost nine years in the 80s and 90s. I was a big Akina fan at the time and Desire was my favorite! (Unfortunately, your clips skipped over some of the best parts of the song!)
