I think you would enjoy watching Netflix's "The Greatest Night in Pop" to see the backstory to this. It was a minor miracle how they got all these stars to set aside their egos and collaborate for one purpose. All accomplished (mostly) in one night. I first heard this song when I was a teenager. Now, at 54, I still love this song! The melody, the lyrics, the singers and of course the philanthropic spirit it conveys... Absolutely lovely and timeless. This was a benefit single for victims of famine in Africa. It raised over $60 Million, which was distributed to Ethiopia, Sudan, and other impoverished countries. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song, and Quincy Jones produced it. This talented trio was perfect for the job: Quincy Jones was the hottest producer around, and his Rolodex (what would now be a contact list) was filled with the biggest names in music. This all-star charity single was modeled on Band Aid, the British group Bob Geldof put together the year before to record "Do They Know It's Christmas?." Band Aid, which included Bono, Phil Collins, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and Sting, served as a template, showing how a disparate group of famous artists could come together in one day to record a song. This was recorded at A&M Studios in Los Angeles on January 28, 1985, the night of the American Music Awards, which was held at the nearby Shrine Auditorium. There are a few things I want to inform you about StaceyRPG (nice last name. lol) . . . 1 - In 1985, Canadian artists also came together for a benefit song . . . Their name was NORTHERN LIGHTS (how fitting) and they performed the song 'Tears are Not Enough' . . . 2 - As to Bruce Springsteen, aka "THE BOSS" . . . I will boldly make this statement . . . I attended the Born to Run concert at the Montreal Forum in 1985 . . . and I was left overwhelmed, in awe and motivated. He performed over 3.5 hours and I was completely exhausted after that concert . . . BUT . . . that concert also changed my life . . . . It was the BOSS that showed me what hard work and dedication can do to achieve your goals in life. The BOSS made me a business man, made me own 4 companies and taught me to live my life for others . . . 3 - YES, times have changed . . . there are no morals and values left in people. Today it's all about me, me, me and MY MONEY!! Men have become women and women are classless. Everyone is greedy and yet they are just slowly and methodically bowing to that greed and the corruption it brings . . . . 5 - . . . . 66 Year old BabyBoomer here. We had the best music, shared experience and the time of our lives. People today do not know talent, they are soul less, Godless creatures. We did something you young people will never do. We lived life. Take your face out of your phone and look around you. As for music, kids today for the most part are clueless as to what music is.

When this song came out, I was working at a radio station in Seattle. There was a movement for every radio station, coast to coast, to play this song at the same time;. We di it. When it was playing, I scanned the stations in Seattle. Every one of them were playing "We Are The World." Pop, rock, country, classical, news talk, etc. It was amazing. I was proud to be a part of that.

Bob Geldof, who was the kickstarter of both British and the Americans. When they where recording this in the USA, he bursted in, found out they had eleborate catering, very excuisite.. He shouted that the Brits, when they where recording it, only had cups of water and some bread. And ordered all catering to be gone, and had them start over again. "when you sing for hunger, feel the hunger"

For reference they recorded this whole song and music video on 1 night after the American music awards. And this was more or less the first and only time they had people in the studio recording this song. There is a documentary about how they made the song and this night called the greatest night in pop

Great reaction! It would be impossible to have something like that nowadays, because everyone (yes, everyone) would be using autotune and lipsync, meaning it would be a totally fake show. No singer in the 80s used such schemes, it was pure talent.
