And what’s more interesting, his results are quite different from my own test on 14’ m3 max. I highly doubt his results. (Unplugged and high performance mode)I tested on my 14 m3 max unit. Cinebench 2024 is around at 1580, event hits at 1605. And 71 seconds Xcode compilation. Overall performance shows Merely no noticeable performance between 16inch and 14inch, but at cost of noise and battery life.

Always go for the 16 - i outlined the many reasons to do it in a video: the 16-inch MacBook Pro provides a larger display and more efficient cooling system, ideal for enhanced visual workspace and sustained high performance. Additionally, its longer battery life makes it better suited for extended use without frequent charging.

After three weeks of using a new 14" 16/40 M3 Max, I must admit that this is the best notebook I have ever used, and your review is misleading. I have a direct comparison to 14" 14/30, and the thermal management is almost the same to each other. In real life, all fans are off during the vast time of your work because the chip is so powerful that your work is done sooner than it hits its limit to start cooling. Even while gaming the AA title or under heavy load, I've never got more than 5200rpms. I would definitely recommend a smaller factor of 14" and 16/40 after my experience as a perfect choice for traveling. The performance is stunning!
@Novapopone

that makes both of us! He ignored the fact that you can over ride the thermal throttling which is done for BATTERY LIFE not because the 14 cant handle it... a power user will set the system to HIGH POWER MODE not positive the actual wording... but i do know that the DEFAULT is AUTO... Myself id keep it on high power default myself and only switch to auto or low when battery life matters. Even plugged in this thing is going to use a ton less energy than all the macs ive used the past 2 decades. I think his review IS misleading but i have a hunch the guy just got out his geek toy tester kit and never checked the fact that performance was ADJUSTABLE! Kinda matters.... ive seen the 14 inch trail the 16 in most all my research but by razor thin margins.... like 15000. vs. 14988. really tiny amounts. He has some massive cliffs the 14 drops off and the more i think about it... thats exactly what would happen to the 14 when pushed super hard on AUTO SETTING!!! KZbin.... you get what we paid for this review.... always cross reference

As much as I love what Apple accomplished with the "Apple Silicon," yeah, no matter what, at least for now, we ended at the same point... more power -> more heat -> a better cooling system. Just think about gaming, Apple is starting to explore, but this is so much different to render because a normal gamer expects the same performance for hours of gaming, and yeah, that's the reason why we have big graphic cards, big pc cases and better cooling systems 😢😢 but it's incredible what a laptop can do these days

11:48 - This is totaly false methodology to compare batary life! You should compare not the remaining battary but the amount spent battery. Your comparison gives almost two times advantage of 16-inch (and this advantage will grow if your test would be longer) but the real difference is 58% vs 78% - just 26% less.

Bro normally I like your tests. But these are like extremes. Just buy whichever fits your lifestyle. 16 in isn’t the most portable. And you shouldn’t decide your entire decision on a stress test. Unless you actually would ever stress test the machine. 95% off users will never need type of performance. Go in a store and go mess with them and see which size fits you better. Don’t make decision on a 5-10% difference that you will never encounter (battery life aside)

@@WorksOnMyComputer I completely disagree with you. I bought the m3 max 14in. I'm a software engineer, I do virtualization and have multiple ide's open at once, while pushing to external monitor, with other things going on in the background... And the computer isn't breaking a sweat. "getting your monies worth" for the 16 is maybe saving 20-40 seconds... and that's only if you are actually doing anything that would push it to its limits. Which once again 95% of users will not do. So don't waste the extra $300, unless you like the size of the 16. because you will not throttle it.

👍Very informative, a huge thank you 👍 for this comparison using M3-max (top tier 16/40)! It follows the same pattern you identified for the M2-max (top-tier) 14" & 16" models. If you happen to have access to this laptop... I'd be very interested to see an addendum to add the ***14" M3-max (lower-tier 14/30)*** to the comparison to see if the lower CPU/GPU count would fit more neatly into the smaller thermal envelope and resolve the thermal 'bottleneck', as there is also a considerable cost difference between the 14" M3-max (14/30) and 16" M3-max (16/40). If the lower tier M3-max 14" 'fits' more neatly into it's smaller thermal envelope to enable it to fully utilise its CPU & GPU cores; then don't you think it would offer a very good value option for those who want portability (pehaps also use an external screen), don't need quite as much processing power but still need a computer for intensive tasks. 0.5kg difference in physical weight aside, the thing that I find heavier is the idea of carrying the larger 16" fully specified laptop about worth more than £4K in my bicycle pannier between meetings! 😧 Your review of the 16" M3-max (14/30) was really helpful in that respect.

I swear, out of touch KZbinrs with their KZbinr money drive me crazy. The fan noise and heat will only be an issue for the few minutes at a time when you're rendering something. I agree also, the M3 Max is only suitable on the 16 inch chasis, not only that, but it seems like once again apple is capping the Max chip on the 14 inch to only draw 40W, (meanwhile the 16 can go up to 62W) even with that, the 14 inch machine still throttles and fans spinning full speed. But then asking for a smooth 8K preview on a small laptop is a bit much to ask for, overall the base m3 pro chip really goes well with a 14 inch, and for someone who needs extra performance, might as well go for the 16 inch with m3 max

The N3B node apple uses is far from fully developed so the TSMC N3B node is not much better than the M2 node which is based TSMC N5P even if apple wants the consumer to believe it and try to get customers to buy products based on TSMC N3B just because these are made on 3nm but an unfinished one with a bad prestandard That the N3B node had problems you could already see on the A17 pro chip, it doesn't come close to what TSMC states that the 3 nano meter node should be able to achieve neither in energy efficiency nor in performance and Apple's M3 chip is based on the A17 pro architecture Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 which, according to tests, has the same or better capacity than Apple's M2 chip Qualcomm Snapdragon is based on TSMC N4 nodes which are now well proven and have good yield as it looks now, the TSMC N4 node is no worse than the TSMC N3B node so that Qualcomm's new Snapdragon uses TSMC N4 is logical apple jumped on the N3 node too early with the consequence that this performs worse than what a 3nm node should do according to TSMC and what apple hoped for TSMC N3B has a very bad yield rate of just 55%, far below the standard which makes this extremely expensive to manufacture now Apple only paying for qualified circuits TSMC pay the rest TSMC sees it as a development cost to get a working 3 nm production with a reasonable yield rate technode.com/2023/07/17/tsmcs-3nm-yield-rate-reportedly-just-55-with-apple-only-paying-for-qualified-circuits/ when TSMC has better control of 3nm manufacturing and better yield, which TSMC will probably get with the N3P node that TSMC expects to come out in 2024 i had waited until apple release the M4 chip before i had upgraded to a new apple MacBook Pro and kept my M1 M2 I MacBook Pro these are enough for 99% of all users there are too few advantages to upgrade to an M3 machine at the price apple wants I also attach a video that shows how greedy apple is if they want they can have replaceable SSDs see below kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4OanmeXit17ma8si=HZGHGS-jb8HO4Trc I'll end with something funny kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3zQZmCgirmFg68si=2Q_M6PGGXMaCasZj kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGarnKCQpZJsbM0si=GWaVlVPuySgO26LI

To be fair some users do prefer size and weight over a sliver of extra performance. It’s kind of a given a smaller less expensive model might be a tiny bit slower. Apple could have a dedicated chip just for the 14” that is slightly slower but they don’t. They give us the full chip and shorter tasks will be much faster because of it. The longer tasks are still insanely fast and the only thing really impacted are bragging rights. The 14” Max in no way is a bad but. It’s a killer laptop much more capable than the 14” Pro. The entire point of a laptop is to be light and small to take with you on the road. That’s important to a lot of users that do want to balance usability vs performance. Plus not every user is editing 8k raw video or gaming on a Mac. They could be performing a lot of tasks on the go where they want more performance but don’t want to lug around a larger and heavier laptop to get more performance.

Be interesting to see a comparison with a real world task, rather than something designed to blow it up. Personally I've always preferred the 14, just find it more flexible and... it is a fair bit cheaper - the bigger screen, fans etc aren't free, worth mentioning that those things come with a $$ attached to them. It's also worth considering that the 14 with a cooling pad (which are very cheap), may be able to produce exactly the same performance as the 16.

The 16 inch machine should also have a longer operational lifespan too, because li-ion batteries hate excessive heat and they hate deep-discharges. The bigger machine's better heat rejection should preserve your battery capacity for longer, and the bigger capacity to start with should mean less need to deep-discharge/recharge the battery pack, also contributing to a longer lifespan.

Im shocked no one asked this or pointed this out. In the past i read apple throttles etc to balance battery life and performance. No ability to avoid that. You did NOT mention if you checked the HIGH PERFORMANCE setting on the 14 inch. The 16 rarely or never throttles for all the reasons you pointed out... but one of the things I read and why i still went with the 14 inch, was that plugged in or on battery power the 14 inch has a selection (ive read) that is somewhat new or unique for macbook pro... and thats HIGH Performance mode... it may be high power mode... either way is it allows for the fans to spin up faster and for the performance to not be 'as' effected as your tests. I cant say for sure because you did NOT mention it.. but my hunch is you did NOT select hi performance mode allowing the 14 inch to run hotter and eat away battery life a bit faster as well BUT perform better... not than the 16... but much better than your tests. I found this refreshing... i want full power and dont care about heat or fans.... and if you select the BATTERY ICON on the menu bar... you can see that the DEFAULT setting is AUTO... which would do what your tests show... why?? because it clearly cant keep its battery life solid AND keep up with the 16 on high work loads. It assumes mobile users value that battery life which is true... but its VERY nice to be able to over ride this while using it as a desktop... You can set the 16 inch as well on HIGH performance setting but as you found out... it pretty much never had to throttle due to obvious advantages in case size and the larger battery is helpful. I saw some make buying decisions based on that and that is sad to me... these Uber nerd geek tests never look into apples settings or what can or can not be over ridden.. also techniques during rendering that can keep things cooler. I guess its entertaining when he acts overly shocked or surprised... it took me 5 minutes when researching top level performance specs, to find out apple has this high performance setting that again...is NOT THE DEFAULT... on my machine it always will be at home.... and ill adjust it for road trips... but all in all these amazing machines last so many hours you should be able to get a loooong days work in entirely unplugged before bedtime... charge her up and repeat... lol... I am psyched for the first time finding an apple laptop with truly pro level speed!! A dream.

With hours of research, I’ve come to realize the 16 Inch is the most logical choice with the M3 Max chip. The assistants at the Apple Store were very adamant about pitching the M3 Max 14 inch to me. I even ordered the M3 Max 14 inch online and my payment was put on hold because I forgot to give my bank a heads up that I was going to be spending a lot more than usual that day. While I could have just returned the 14 inch if I didn’t like it; I’m grateful that I continued doing further research on these MacBook variations even after I ordered it because it’s possibly saved me a lot of time, money and energy. Even though I appreciate the size and feel of the 14 inch, I realized that not going with the 16 inch would be an atrocity considering the price I’m already paying and the performance I seek to achieve with this machine. I’d be playing myself! I’m used to experiencing a hot dry climate, so I can’t imagine having to possibly deal with annoying fan noise from the 14 inch over working itself, struggling to keep the MacBook cool and operating at a max capacity, which limits the boundaries in which the M3 Max chip was designed to perform. I will be getting the MacBook M3 Max 16 inch instead. Besides, I’m looking for a durable machine that can optimize my tech experience with plenty of screen space to not feel limited on the go. With a longer lasting battery and a cooler running system; I don’t mind dealing with the extra weight and space of the 16 inch. For me, that’s a sacrifice worth the confidence of optimum efficiency. My goal is to feel empowered enough to ditch my desktop should I feel obliged to do so and to have a machine that provides the freedom to explore other technological abilities should new endeavors spark my interest.
