They did that in the past and it was always very smooth (M1, M2). I think this is why they do not mention it anymore. Of course if you do multitasking and use bigger files or bigger projects you need more RAM and maybe more storage. 8GB: Great for browsing online, streaming movies, messaging with friends and family, editing photos and personal video, casual gaming, and running everyday productivity apps. 16GB: Great if you will be multitasking across a large number of memory-intensive apps, including professional video editing. 24GB or more: Best if you typically work on advanced projects that require enormous files and content libraries.

The graph at 7:58 is ridiculous. Whoever draws your graphs either can't do basic math or is being intentionally dishonest. The M3 Max score is 328, vs. 194 for the M2 Max - that's an increase of about 70%, but the bar is 325% longer. Also, how about showing what's on these "tracks", since comparing "tracks" is meaningless without knowing what plugins they're running, or whether it's just hundreds of copies of the same audio clip with some basic effects.

I’ve seen similar comparisons between the M2 Max and M3 Max. So for anyone who has an M2 Max chip, you don’t really need an update, unless you really want the new Space Black Color, those who come with the M1 Max chip, half of you will probably want an upgrade, and the other half would need to hold off for next year. Those who has an intel based Mac is a substantial upgrade

Thank you for including the timestamps; I went straight to the Blender test since the main feature in the M3 APU is the graphics improvements. Rendering is a significant aspect of 3D modeling and animation, but even more important is the creative process. This is why viewport performance is crucial for 3D graphics designers. The ability to preview the scene (composition) in real-time at a quality level closer to the final product is the holy grail of 3D animation and something that can't be tested with synthetic benchmarks.

Seeing the benchmarks I was getting pretty interested in maybe upgrading until I saw the fan speed during that Cenibench test. For me the quietness of my M1 Max has been so key to an amazingly happy experience. They never ramp up unless I am playing a game and then its really not that bad at all. However, the M3 Max, while super fast, if it starts to ramp up and eventually hits 100% fan speed when my M1 Max only ever hit around 40% when I am running harder tasks, it honestly makes me want to consider getting a M3 Max Mac Studio just for those tasks and keep the M1 Max MacBook for a much more comfortable and casual experience. This Macbook is now litterally the reason why I love and hate PC gaming laptops. Ultra gaming performace but they get SOO loud that it's just not enjoyable for me. Thankfully those gaming laptops usually have performance modes so you can lower the fan speed at the cost of some performace. I wonder if running on low power mode may do the same thing for the M3 Max... MaxTech if you read this at all. can you please do a noise comparison with the M3 Max gaming or running Cenibench to max out the CPU/GPU and then put it in Low Power mode and compare the difference?

there is an app to manually ramp up the fans. spoiler: the noise is terrible 😂
@cmoullasnet
@cmoullasnet Жыл бұрын
If you normalize to performance, there will be less noise. In other words, if you were to slow down a new 3nm chip to perform the same as an older 5nm chip it would use less power and by proxy run quieter. Not that it helps you if you’re regularly maxing out your cores, but if that’s you then you’ll likely prefer saving half your life waiting for things in time than a bit more noise anyways…
@broccoloodle

@@broccoloodle The die shrink has reduced power at the same performance level. Yes, to some extent power will increase with frequency, but the effect is minimal and more than offset by the die shrink. I’d love to see a comparison between same spec M3 Max (40GPU) 14 and 16 inches. M1 Max and M2 Max 14” had massive throttling but looks like they did some magic with the new SoC and its thermals. It would be awesome to measure how much 14-16 differs in sustained clock frequencies under load.

3:45 → pls Max Tech, check your bar charts if they appear in the video. 14,036 is not half of 20,889. Presented in this way, the rating for the M3 Max should be around 28,072. The good old trick to boost diagrams ;). Otherwise, a great video and good comparison.

I can't fathom the time you spent on running these tests vs the time you spent making sure the charts are OK. It looks like they're complete garbage. Just look at 7:58 for instance! M3 is at 328 tracks M2 is at 194 tracks M1 is at 118 tracks Now look at the relative size of the gauges. Am I the only one noticing the huge discrepancy??? Or is there something I'm missing out?

What a great test and what an amazing machine! Could you guys please test the binned M3 Max (14 CPU, 30 GPU cores)? A helpful commenter already gave me the Geekbench and 3D Mark scores, and based on those I feel like that might be the best value unit for heavy video editor workflows. If you get a chance that would be great! Thanks!

Nice if you need all that power of the M3 Max. But I only need a mid range M3 so got an M3 Pro. It’s great you really need all that power but I wonder on lower everyday tasks would the M3 pro last longer?

At 8:03 you show a graph with M3 Max beating an M1 Ultra in Logic, but then say "This thing is beating the M2 Ultra".

The M3 Max cost a lot more than the M1 and M2 Max. It's almost like you are paying for a M3 Ultra anyway.

Having an M1 and M3 I can tell you the difference in everyday activity is undetectable (browsing, email, basic work activity etc...). Big difference if you are compiling or converting video.

Planning to update my base M1 Pro to M3 Max with 64GB RAM and 2TB SSD I am soooo excited about this, it looks like this laptop is gonna be for a YEARS 🤩 Also I know I am dumb about this but I am still considering it for a gaming since we have GPTK, Whisky etc.

Same spec MacBook I’m considering here. I bought the unbinned M1 Pro with 16gb ram to test the waters switching from windows to Mac and though it’s a great machine, I’m spoiled by the M1 Max Mac Studio with 64gb ram I bought a few months later. Now considering rolling both machines into this MacBook.

@@GeRoni M2 Max can already do 500 fps on WoW (which is impressive since the RTX 4090 is rated to do 260 max at 2.5K resolution). In Crossover the M2 Max can do WoW at 200-300 fps although it fluctuates wildly, at least on mine.

I've got an M1 Max 16'' -- I'm tempted by the M3, but I tend to upgrade my laptops every 5 years these days, so I can wait a bit longer. Still, I wouldn't have touched the M2 -- the M3 Max with the revised TSMC process looks like a winner. Looking forward to see what the high-end desktops look like next year.

Same here. I'll probably upgrade around the M5 or M6, the next leap. The M4 vs M3 will most likely be like the M2 vs M1. Not sure if we can get to 2 or 1nm in the next few years, so looking to Apple to make the gains in the actual chip itself (which is also good). Another good thing, the SnapDragon is starting to catch up, which is great for the M series as Apple will want to make sure they keep innovating for their sales. Also means lots more native ARM software in non Apple areas, like Windows and Linux. Also noticed chip lithography technology is improving and getting cheaper. Hope it can get to a place in 10 or so years where Apple could set up their own fab and not need to schedule with TSMC or whoever (won't hold my breath on that one though)...

On the audio tracks test-those number of tracks aren't going to be used by the majority of people. Its plug ins and automations that will slow apps down. You guys should get a musician to bring a big project and render it.

Video editors should wait for Final Cut Pro to get its update as promised by Apple. That will probably take advantage of the new GPU features, and perhaps the double encoders on the M3 Max.
