Maxx Darth: The Blackest Black - Comparison to other black paints

Hello Model Clubbers!
Got some Maxx Darth Black from Green Stuff World and I figured I would compare it to other black paints and just test it out and see what it does. Does it works as advertised? Let's find out!

It looks like it's best strength is in making something disappear. So the inside of cloaks or hoods or where your trying to create the effect of darkness. Whereas for most model painting you really want your blacks to be visable, especially for camera purposes. I really liked the side by side comparison of the blacks. The Chaos black I think really nailed the best on camera look by itself, though the black with wash was excellent for just a little extra work. But if you're gonna hit something with a wash anyways, that's perfect.

I wonder how this compares to Black 3.0 and Black 4.0 from Culture Hustle. Those are also extremely dark, ultra matte black paints designed for artists. 3.0 may not be durable enough for gaming miniatures, but 4.0 improved upon that.

Can't wait to get mine. I am going to do a zenithal with it to obtain more contrast. Also black armor with this could be interesting especially if you layer on a normal black.

I mean thats cool but with two armies that are primarily black i almost never use a pure black. I am always trying to bring the color level up to bring interesting details to the black.

Scale 75 flat black is a really matte flat black also. The maxx Darth looks similar to what culture hustle makes. And the culture hustle paint is hard to use.

I bought some Musou Black Paint on Amazon. It also claims to be the blackest black. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Thanks Jason. My bottle arrived a few days ago, but I haven't found time to test it yet. I'm wondering how durable it's going to be without a clear coat, and what a clear coat will do to the shade of the paint?

It seems pretty durable and I think any sort that of clear coat would ruin the effect. I'll mess around with it and let you know

So it seems pretty durable, doesn't really scratch or chip but it does pick up oil from skin really easy and creates a sheen.

I use regular model colour vallejo black and it is nice and flat, wierd how yours has a sheen. Mine is flat as hell.

I used to think it was super flat too (like ten years ago) then I started using some other paints and I was like hmmmm. Especially that Pro Acryl Coal Black, it is really flat

Most flat primers need a point 05 or 07 without thinning. No need for these numerous coats.

Sorry, the flat black doesn't compare to the others which are meant to be shinney so as to paint over high-gloss paints. Want flat then compare flat or flat primers.

Coal black is flat. The two Vallejo blacks are not meant to be glossy because I have Vallejo Gloss Black, I purposely didn't use that one. I just grabbed a bunch of black paint that I had. And it is not so much the flatness, it's that the other blacks don't look black next to the Maxx Darth.

@modelclubtv thank you!! I'm excited to know, and possible, dry brush, how it looks? There are a lot of things this could really do!! I'm mixed in paints or with mediums. I'm excited about the possibilities!! I can't find it on their site. But I'll get some asap from this alone!!

They are still getting the kickstarter orders out and when that is done, I think it will be up on the site. I used the Behr matte spray over it. It does add a slight sheen but the color still stays super black.@@WickedTheReaper

Huh, interesting!! I'm gonna have to wait a while to test dry brushing. Like black, grey, and white, then a contrast / speed paint. That could be a video all on its own! General colors dry brushed over it as well, even metallic because they take best with a black primer normally. I really want this product!!!

Musou is definitely black, but it is horrible to work, with and ridiculously expensive…and stink is toxic.
