Funny story, if I might. I was stationed in Montana back when the speed limit was "reasonable and prudent". Then idiots in Congress enacted the country-wide 55 MPH speed limit. Montana was one of the last (after losing a law suit) to enact the law. Generally, however, state police ignored the posted speed limits, so we drove at the usual 80 to 90 MPH on the open spaces. Loved my assignment in Montana!!

The Higher the elevation the colder it gets. So Snow on top of a 12,000 ft mountain never melts because the temps never get above 32 degrees Fahrenheit !

Question: does snow melt slower at higher elevations? I thought I totally knew the answer to this. "It's all thermodynamics," I thought, but... Answer: Yes! Melting favours more barometric pressure (like at sea level). So, at higher altitudes, it's harder to get snow and ice to melt.
@AndrewHaverson Жыл бұрын
Bonus: boiling point of water actually goes down a little bit at elevation. It goes down 1°F for every 500 feet in elevation.

The snow on the mountain tops builds up during winter and changes into a white layer of ice because of the weight of the snow and the combination of melting on warmer days and freezing during colder days. This layer of ice builds up during the winter time and melts during the rest of the year resulting in glaciers and rivers. On the mountain tops the air is thinner and the air pressure is lower. This results in lower temperatures. Depending on the climate in a country the snow line is either higher or lower

You look at the snow melt a bit backward when you suggest it is not melting at 32 degrees, as I've been taught to understand anyway. Air at high altitude is much colder than at low altitude, so it isn't above 32 long enough on the top of mountain to melt. The colder air all around the mountain top also keeps the ground temperature up there from warming very long. Plus the sun rays play a part in heating the snow. Even at ground level, we see snow stay around longer in ditches or on banks of land where sun rays don't reach to penetrate it very long and heat the soil, even if air around it is above 32 degrees. The angle of the sun rays on those mountains is different than on flat ground, so it doesn't warm the surface up there as fast as it does on level ground. That's how my physical science and chemistry courses explained it to me years ago. That's why I don't believe any of this climate change non-sense. The air temps around us on the surface may warm a bit more over a wider area, as we build more structures and more lanes of roads that absorb sun rays and heat up, but the air temps up higher in altitude ---- even higher than mountains ---- is not changing. It just varies up and down at lower elevations -- as it always has in the long history of earth. This message is just to JGB, I'm not getting in any debate with anyone else here.
