There is something about the song that makes anyone who speaks any mutation of English want to write their own English language version. The German version is pretty much standardized across all the many factions of the left. One historical tidbit is that after the 1939 German-Soviet Pact (The Molotov-Rippentrop Pact) state visits were exchanged. This presented a problem because at the time the national anthem of the USSR was the Internationale. There was concern that when the Wehrmacht band played the Internationale at the Berlin train station the German railway workers would join in singing their anthem. This awkward situation was avoided by not playing the anthems in either Moscow or Berlin for the visits.

@@Dutch_Uncle Isn't the whole joy of the Internationale that socialists of different nations, languages and dialects are encouraged to write their own version? The song is supposed to be translated and rewritten again and again, modernized as needed or adapted to certain music styles and instruments. I don't mind all the different versions as long as they keep in the spirit of the original.

@@mynamejeff3545- I agree that translations offer an opportunity for creativity in the spirit of the original. However, the profusion of versions in English makes spontaneous group slinging difficult. The more standardized German version makes this easier in non-scripted situations, such as bars. In the exchange of state visits after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1939, aka as the Hitler-Stalin pact, normal protocol called for the national anthems to be played on the arrival of the dignitaries. However, at the time the USSR anthem was the Internationalle, and there was concern that on the arrival of the Soviet delegation at the train station, if the Wehrmacht band played this treasured anthem of the German left, the German railroaders and others would join in with full-throated enthusiasm in singing this prohibited song. This potential awkwardness was avoided by going against protocol and just not playing Deutschland, Deutschland Ueber Alles in Moscow or the Internationalle in Berlin. It would have made a great collectors record, with the German Army rendition of the Internationalle on one side, and the Soviet version of Deutschland, Deutschland Ueber Alles on the other.

@@Dutch_Uncle pretty sure that was one of the points of the soviets. If workers sing the Internationale,.they can't help but identify with other workers. So, the Imperialist powers, like Germany, had to ban the song.
