SPOILER thoughts on the movie- The film also had an unexpected approach to tackling the tragedy of Charles Melton’s character too. Not once was the “r” word used to describe what he went through (even though that’s the reality of the situation), but I think that was intentional. Society has a habit of downplaying sexual crimes made against males, and given his performance towards the end, it becomes quite clear how much of an impact this has had on his mentality. Arrested development doesn’t even begin to cover the state he’s in. It’s almost like every character is gaslighting him too. Either intentionally with their description of the event (using words like “affair”, or more subtly like his father’s indifference) or unintentionally with the very existence of his children (who are simultaneously reminders of his tragedy but also reminders of the “love” he still feels for Julianne Moore’s character). He doesn’t even know how to be a parent because he never finished being a kid. His meticulously protective release of the butterfly coupled with his emotional reaction at the kids graduation spoke volumes to me. The only thing I’m curious about is how the real family this movie based itself on has reacted to the release. But considering the message of the film, maybe it’s best to leave them alone.

He’s so mentally underdeveloped in certain aspects of his life that it prevents him from becoming a full person. The use of the butterflies as a metaphor for his own journey into understanding himself and his past was so touching. Thanks for this comment!

Interesting how Adam Sandler's "That's My Boy" also went with how his character did not grow up because of the rapes and fathering a child at such a young age. Tho obviously that movie treated the rape as the boy winning over a sexy adult woman.

I’m fascinated by the scene we see Elizabeth filming at the end, where not only is the lisp exaggerated as in the letter monologue, but the pink lipstick is too bright and the feminine dress is a little too girly and overly detailed compared to what Gracie actually wears-it ends up feeling close to caricature.

Did her last chat with Gracie throw her off or was Elizabeth just a bad actress the whole time? It’s a really interesting question to think about.

@@IntercutPod Like Joe, Elizabeth is in her own state of arrested development. When the director warns her about the ($$) she flirts with him. She is there to "develop her character" but not by acting, by casting someone she can fetishize. Now the convo has shifted to something sexual -Where is his wife? Well, she landed the part in an international movie so she's busy. A flippant "Good" is all she can say. A director who has become uncomfortable with his lead actor, is unsure of the casting for her opposite, and working with budget constraints .. hmm.. is that director also low budget? What would Judge Judy say? Didn't Gracie meet Judy? Yes, in fact its the last time Gracie met a "Hollywood type" .. and unluckily for Elizabeth, she was a judge....

The ending was great because it begs the question, she did all of that for THIS? It is soooo damning and you realize the lengths she went to were completely and literally in vain. The idea that the project is ultimately a shitty lifetime movie is amazing. Also I feel like her status is alluded to when Gracie’s daughter compliments her show Norah’s Arc lmfaooo which is the most ridiculous name for a show that could be thought up. This movie was so dynamic and incredible, loved every second

I think the movie is about the weird perversion of gawking at women predators yet also the depths of a rare unique case that is very sad and medias fascination and Natalie played that perfectly, as the embodiment of that …I was so distracted about how grossly she thought of these people as a movie and the fantasy she kept till the end .. very creepy and she did the opposite of what she promised them she was just getting a personal thrill

This is one of those films that has a lot of question marks and has you thinking about it after you see it. Not just entertainment WHILE you are watching it.

This movie is base on a real story of teacher, having a relationship with a 12-year-old student. Then eventually married that student later on, then divorce year after before she passed away. After been married for 14 years with two kids together.

It's also a commentary on how/when we as Adults intuitively draw + cross lines. The semi-informed viewer is tolerating being gaslit as well until drawing a line themselves. RE: Elizabeth - "how's your wife?" - MASK OFF! As a married woman, I thought "ok, this woman is bad news" LOL. In my POV the intent to fetishize + sexualize this convo showed her lack of moral character. RE: Joe stunted at age 13 - has never been afforded the ability to draw lines. Again as a married person, this was apparent by the way he with the invited his FB Friend, " let's see where the butterflies end." A grown man would understand the context of that invite, but to Joe, the offer was at face value. Again, he is held hostage by his relationship to Gracie. He understands the existence of the lines but is unable to navigate them. Great movie!

Damnnn Art's interpretation of the wife portraying herself the way she wanted to be portrayed just blew my mind. That would make "I'm not insecure" hit even harder. Still, I kinda interpret the brother thing as 50/50. I don't think Mary is as secure with herself as she claims to be too and could have been lying about her personal trauma. We will never know though.
