IndianRaga Fellows Harsha and Lalit met up in Cleveland and sent us a video of their jam session in the ragam Maya Malava Gowla! As a ragam we know it as the one in which we learn our very basic note patterns and exercises, but to imagine the depth we can go into in it!
Please like and share if you like this! #indianraga

Wow! So beautifully sung. Their voices have sowkhya bhaava in abundance. Also, this raaga is especially suited for their voices because the raga has a peace-inducing (shantha rasa) quality inherent in it, to match with the sowkhya-inducing voices. It also generates bhakthi , and relaxes the mind, and reduces stress. Listening to Mayamalavagowla raaga in the morning is highly recommended. What an astonishing, inspiring, and pleasant video this is! Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania

After watching this video, their singing lingered in my mind for several days. Their alapana, neraval and kalpanaswaras, too, rang in my mind continuosly, while reading, cooking, making coffee, reading newspapers, taking showers. It almost haunted me. After I downloaded it onto my laptop, I must have listened to it at least fifty times. (I am not exaggerating!) Mayamalavagowla is my most favorite of all raagas: I like Bhairavi, Shankarabharana and Yadukulakambodhi also, of course; but I agree with Saint Purandara Dasa that Mayamalavagowla is the king of all raagas: It is majestic, and so rich in Sowkhya bhaava (It has shaanta rasa) that it has generously endowed many of its Janya raagas with Shanta rasa also: Raagas such as Malahari, Saveri, Bhowli, Lalitha and Jaganmohini. Look at the tastefully decorated Music Room: The lovely statue of Sangeetha Devata goddess Saraswathi; the great Trimurthy's picture below it; and the photo of the legendary Brindamma, whose name is synonimous with singing pleasantly with sowkhya bhaava, in unhurried manner. Sri Lalit Subramanian comes from Sangeetha Kalanidhi Brindamma's school of course (He is a sishya of Sri Tiruvarur Girish), and Sri Harsha Nagarajan's teacher, violinist Sri T K V Ramanujacharyulu, is also known for the sowkhya bhaava inherent in his music. On KZbin there is a video of him playing Mayamalavagowla on violin, v=ed28LL4IzJE. No wonder, then, that this video oozes sowkhya bhaava from the beginning to the very end. At places, it reminds me of Brindamma's rendition of Merusamana. Minimalism is the beauty of Carnatic music and this video is such an example.

Nice to hear! Just a suggestion. The passage "jAtarUpanibhacEla janmArjitam mamAkhila" is incomplete in meaning. So while we may find neraval around this line musically appealing, one who knows and cares for the meaning will be bothered by the fact that repeating that line makes no sense. I feel the next line "pAtakasancayam iha vAraya karuNayA" is a better choice for neraval (with janmArjitam and mamAkhila incorporated occasionally to qualify pAtakasancayam). The karuNArasam of the raaga can also be brought out appropriately.
