Oh cripes the politics of semantics is so irrelevant here. (see below string of comments) Arman's use of the word Jewish is fine with me. The objections to his usage seem specious and rather silly. If you want to challenge the word Jewish vav Maya you would need to ask her how she relates to it. Since you can't do that it's best to be quiet and enjoy the art Arman went to the trouble to share with us. Thanks Arman for this video.

Precisely right. You can't do that so it's best be quiet. There is no reason whatsoever to mention it in the first place, and so he shouldn't have. That was the whole point of everyone criticizing Arman. (Who, as an aside, went to exactly no trouble whatsoever in creating or uploading this video, so get your head out of his arse, mate.)

I'm from Finland, Helsinki. We had the unbelievable priviledge of enjoying frequent visits of the greatest Bolshoi Ballet stars in the 1960s and 1970s, among them Maya Plisetskaya. I was then a teenager, dancing myself, and I admired her SOOOO MUCH, she was a goddess in every sense. Once with a friend of mine (who also studied ballet) we waited for her at the entrance of the Helsinki Opera and Ballet House (very modest at that time) to ask for an autograph. And she not only gave us that but also walked with us all the way to her hotel in the city center, very polite and friendly, talking with us in Russian, which we had studied in school for some months. Me and my friend still remember that moment as one of the highlights of our lives. Later we saw also several of her performances on screen. She was absolutely the most intelligent and expressive of modern dancers. AND her husband created great music. I was shocked when I heard that Plisetskaya died - I had thought that she would be immortal... Not like the swan...

She was recruited by KGB like many other artists, actors, sportsmen and writers. Secretive cooperation with KGB was a precondition for tours abroad. @@igortchernowitzer927 ... If this is true (and please tell me your sources), her wishing to perform abroad doesn't necessarily mean she was a 'proponent' of the Soviet regime; what choice did she have? Maya was born with dance in her soul. She embodied the essence of every role she danced. I saw her dance The Dying Swan in Los Angeles. It was absolutely breathtaking and moving. We all come from different backgrounds but at the core are all human beings. It is simply a fact that Maya was Jewish, and was a Russian-Jewish dancer trained in the great Russian Ballet School. Stating a fact is not a problem. In the US it is common to describe people as African-American, Japanese-American, Irish American, etc. People who come from a multitude of cultures are artists in interpreting music and dance from around the world. That is the universality of art, a human expression transcending national boundaries.

Maya Plisetskaya, recently deceased, was a brilliant Russian dancer. Bejart was from Belgium, I believe. Ravel was French. The Bolero is a Spanish dance.

Thank you for sharing this amazing video of Maya Plesetskaya performance. I'm watching it again and again. She was a unique , one of a kind dancer . PS People, don't be crazy. Maya Plesetskaya was a USSR famous ballerina. And YES, if to talk about nations , she was Jewish. it's not a question. And Broodskiy , and a lot of other talented people who lived and worked in USSR not all of them were Russian and it's OK .

Incredible . . . Bolero is one of my favorite pieces of music of all time, here being choreographed and danced by one of the greatest ballerinas of all time, performed when she was 50. Any attempt at a description would be an understatement.

I couldn't care less about her parentage, religion or anything other than her incredible achievements in dance. Her name obviously denotes her Russian background and her training was superb, of course. But it is Plisetskaya's complete "PRESENCE" in every role that mesmerised her audiences and lifted us into the magical realm of sheer beauty where great poetry abides. Performances like Bolero remind us that we are capable of more than the tawdry baseness that mars human societies in the hands of egomaniacal politicians, irresponsible industrialists, ruthless corporate "tycoons" and everyday thugs who clamour for the power that only nature herself possesses. Artists like Béjart and Plisetskaya fulfill a need the power-mad will never understand.
