How did you keep the model from having overlapping faces when extruding? Did you have problems when you went to UV unwrap?

Hi 👋 to quickly clean up any and all overlapping faces simply select your entire model and go to MODELING > EDIT MESH > MERGE this will scan your model and remove any accidentally created overlapping geometry! This will also fix any uv issues.

Yes, there have only been a couple additional tools in the new Maya updates. Everything can still be done with previous older versions.
