Its nice they already have their places in the howl symphony. It was so sad when we got a rescue husky mix last year, the 2 westies would do the usual when something alerted them, the male on long howls and the female alternating barks and short howls. But the poor husky would just kind of sit there and cower, and then eventually let out one weak little "awoo" and then got scared the westies looked over at her and ran away lol. Our old Lab was screams (and I mean actual screaming noises like they do sometimes). Every 5 or so howls from the westies. Husky is finally starting to find her role though, the last few weeks shes done her own little husky screams but shes still figuring out pitch and how often 😆

🤔 I can't help but think that Timber _might've_ been trying to get Awa to come over BEFORE he ate anything, to *ensure* she knew it was there... 🤷♂️ I'm only basing this on behavior I've seen in my _actual_ dogs, where the one (the dominant doggo) tries to keep the other one "in line". When it's time to come inside, if he (a Hound breed) is lollygagging towards the back of the yard, my Husky girl will run a few feet, stop and bow down, then race back to me... all to try and get his attention. Although, I admit, that's mostly because SHE is food motivated... 😅 Because she won't get a treat until they both come inside. So the quicker she can get him in, the faster she gets something. But, She does "look after" him, where if he manages to escape, she makes sure to follow him, whereas she otherwise wouldn't make an effort to get out. 🤷♂️ [/end of rambling]

Just curious... I wonder if them being frozen doesn't also somewhat reduce the smell of the meat and as they start to thaw the smells release more, which kind of allows you to put out the food without them getting rowdy for the food right then? Sorry. My brain thinks out loud, even in text it appears. Like I know wolves and dogs smell really awesomely(bad engrish) I mean they have insane sniffers Super sniffers even, but I also know in principle freezing something should reduce its ability to produce a smell. Not completely remove it but reduce it. I guess though with how much more powerful these wolfdogs noses are the frozen meat would still reach their noses before you ever throw them? (head spins) I would guess that their nose is probably stronger than the limiting factor of freezing something. (shrug)

keep in mind these are wolf dogs, theyre smaller than real wolves because they are cross bred with dogs. a normal grey wolf would be 70-180 lbs
@Dell-ol6hb6 ай бұрын
@@0Pardofelis not really, only a few wolves reach those huge sizes, the further north you go the larger grey wolves get, but on average they're around 80-85 lbs, though they appear larger than dogs of equal weight because they have proportionally a more gracile, taller build since they actually have to chase down prey, something that dog breeds don't need to do
@BroKenYaKnow6 ай бұрын
@@Dell-ol6hb Not correcting, just adding. The northern-er grey wolves are bigger cause of their diets. Access to the moose (occasionally) and caribou gives access to them more protein while having to perform fewer hunts, so bigger wolves. Most US grey wolves have better access to smaller deer populations (white tail for example) and small game, like rabbits. Not to say Canadian wolves don't eat small deer or rabbits, they just have better access to more protein without having to expend as much energy. A good display of this is the absolutely massive size of canadian timber wolves (subspecies of gray wolf), they can get upwards of 175 pounds

Might be a dumb question, but do they need to get groomed? Like if they get matted, and they can’t be in the same space as people, how would they handle that?
@lucienblake97886 ай бұрын
Not dumb! While that may be a problem if they were more dog than wolf, genetically these wolfdogs are more wild animals than domesticated types, therefor their body can be much easier to maintain in the ways a normal wolf would in the wild. Grooming each other, the environment around them naturally grinding their claws etc. As for matting, unless something was wrong & the wolves weren't or couldn't groom for some reason I couldn't imagine severe matting being a problem, if it was then typically you'd have a vet come in to help figure out why & you'd probably have to lightly sedate them to get rid of any severe matting, hope this helps :)

I've heard Maya say that the zoo they received these animals from received a number of violations of the Animal Welfare Act, and she said that they decided to downsize. Why didn't the USDA shut them down? Why were they given the option of downsizing, when animals were being harmed?
@bogwife79426 ай бұрын
they probably had a good track record and the violations weren't that serious yet, so they were given the option to downsize so they could better allocate resources to the animals. no doubt if the violations continue they would be shut down, but these things aren't black and white. just because they aren't giving an animal the proper standard of care doesn't mean its being abused/neglected necessarily. she mentioned them being fed dog kibble, which isn't ideal but also isn't starving them, either. I don't think the USDA _wants_ to shut anyone down unless it's absolutely necessary, because it could put the animals in an even more precarious position. either way, I'm glad they're at Alveus now!
@jmg9996 ай бұрын
@@bogwife7942 I thought about that, as well, but it seemed that if they were forced to give up at least two animals that we know of, that would seem a fairly drastic step to take. Normally, I would think that you're correct, and these would be issues that could be remediated, but in this case, it seemed that only a serious infraction would incur such a solution.
@bogwife79426 ай бұрын
@@jmg999 i think they're choosing to downsize for themselves. zoos and sanctuaries trade around animals fairly frequently, so it isn't _too_ drastic, imo. the violations can't be that bad if they're getting the choice to downsize/send away animals, rather than having them seized. this way, they can give the animals they still have more time and attention, to avoid further violations. wish maya would talk about it more but i understand it might be a touchy subject
