For me personally, once I saw Norma's whole backstory, she became the most tragic and sympathetic character in the show. She does and says some awful things and she frustrates the shit out of me at times but I can't help but feel really bad for her. Dylan is awesome :). The relationship between Norma and Dylan is probably my favourite overall. Glad you're enjoying.

I love Freddie Highmore! I have been a fan since he was a bitty boy. I think he is brilliant. I think the writers of this show don't assume the viewers know the movie, so it's a mistake to impose your knowledge of where that character ends up onto this Norman at this point in time, I believe. If you think of Norman as a "bad guy" and ignore the "origin story," you do the character a disservice.
