Back-up washer next to the o-ring is what i call it been working in hydraulics for 30 years

Little mechanic trick, use a hose clamp prior to installing to “train” the rings and use something like Park-O-Lube to install

The back-up ring allows for variability in the bore while keeping the o-ring sealed. That’s why the ring has the expansion and contraction capability

I oil the filter to help speed up the flow when oil does flow through it. It takes a minute for the material to absorb into it. it's just a feel-good thing. My Duramax Has two big filters I prefill because of the quantity of oil required to fill them. Doesn't hurt to give then a little head start.

I never put oil in sideways filters. It all runs out. If they are vertical and the opening goes to the top, then yes. It doesn't take that long for them to fill. No different then a cold start. It will get there. If you put the right additive like Lucas, then a small amount stays on the critical parts for cold start anyhow. Anyone who says Lucas is junk or not necessary, I have 260k miles on a 91 Chevy SB350 engine that starts up everytime I hit the key. It's plenty strong and only loses 1/2 quart between changes. It doesn't leak either. You get a gasser to go 35 years and that many miles using just oil....then you can come talk to me.

Everything takes time. If I remember correctly deere refers to them as backup rings

When you’re doing a sideways oil filter, you take and stand your oil filter up and fill the center hole as quick as you can and then wait and the oil will all get sucked up in the paper element and then then install it it takes like a pint of oil that you have in the filter on start up we had to do it with lawnmower enginesso just the tip

I love your clips and insights into machinery and history and thank you for your efforts with the time you put into them from 6 to 12hrs to make some of them. But this one with the screen bouncing around while your walking around would give you a headache and I think KZbin should give a 3 month ban to all youtubers that post videos with such poor sound quality and high wind noise just my 2 cents

Anybody have any guesses on how many times he mounts and dismounts that hydrostat before getting another one or having this one sent off and fixed. 99% of the time you don't get lucky enough that a outer gasket and a couple o-rings fixes the problem... I bet it's guts are flat wore out
