I think in that situation the mechanic should've taken the spare off the roof (he already had his hands on it) and laid it down next to McNaulty. McNaulty should have taken his computer off the bike no matter what (stash it up your shorts leg or hell, even hold it in your mouth) when the repair fails it's only a couple of seconds to pickup the spare, mount and clip the computer on. Marginal gains.

McNulty could learn from watching top Cyclocross riders like Van Aert, Van der Poel, Iserbyt, Pidcock, Hermans,... they all keep their cool when mechanicals or crashes happen. They know that getting all worked up for something beyond their control is going to make the chase that much harder, or put them out of contention when there is still time. McNulty has had some big wins this year, but he's had crap luck with his GC ambitions in 2022. Crash at Paris-Nice, then Itzulia was a big focus but he DNS'd due to covid, then he was their stated GC guy here and now this.

Are you really talking about the same Paris-Nice as I am? The same that McNulty was there to work for his leader who left Quickstep so he would have a team by his side but with guys like McNulty, Soler and Ayuso doesn't happen as those three only seem to respect a leader, an established GC leader if his name is Tadej Pogaçar.

@@Landeirovic I was only talking about Paris-Nice. McNulty was in the first group if I can remember before he crashed. There were three mistakes. 1) McNulty unnecessarily jumped a curb on a TT bike. 2) Mechanic should have stuck to his protocols and replaced the bike. 3) McNulty overwrote the mechanics decision. Outside of cycling (including racing road and mountain myself), I race/rally cars. Regarding to #1 above, how you use your equipment is part of the winning equation. I see so many needless curb jumping in so many races. No different from senseless drifting or wheel spinning in auto racing. This adds stress to the equipment and adds additional risk of failure.
