In this video, a Republic Airways (operating as American Eagle) Embraer E175LR (N113HQ), operating flight RPA4676 from Nashville (BNA) to New York LaGuardia (LGA), encounters an unexpected issue on final approach. The flight crew reported an unusual clicking sound coming from the nose landing gear and decided to go around. After requesting delay vectors to assess the situation, the crew declared MAYDAY and diverted to JFK Airport. Watch as the aircraft lands safely on runway 4L at JFK, bringing this intense situation to a calm conclusion.

Yeah mustve been so unnerving for the passengers particularly since they're going to a different airport which is so out of the ordinary, then they're in the air for quite a while.... frightening it mustve been. I was on AA about 2 months ago when we had a precautionary landing in Salisbury, MD. I was in seat 1A and had a good view of the flight attendant, and he was calm. Upon landing with the emergency vehicles ready to go, I also thanked the pilots. They did a great job keeping their cool and keeping us all informed. I fly a lot, and always appreciate when my pilots keep us informed. Turns out the hydraulics had failed, and the plane was out of service for awhile. I felt bad for the passengers who had been waiting to board. Wish I could hear that communication with ATC.

I was in a plane in the 1980’s whose landing gear didn’t open as we descended toward as airport. We heard the plane try repeatedly then we soared back up super high (exactly like this but as passengers we knew no reasons). Then the pilot quietly and calmly told us the landing gear was not working. They were all so calm so I was calm and so were the passengers. We circled a few times and then landed perfectly normally. So I imagine planes do this as a precaution more often than we think.

WHY DONT THEY HAVE MONITOR CAMS. ON LANDING GEAR?

Ostensibly, because that would make it more difficult to tamper with. 😏

Cams would just add weight and break. It would also cost millions to install and offer no benefit.

@saxmanb777 dumbest comment ever cameras are able to weigh almost nothing nowadays and they would allow pilots to see important areas of the plane they're flying to check for damage or to see whatever else is potentially wrong

@ you forgot about the hardware in the cockpit, the certification process and the millions of dollars it would cost. No airline will spend this money and I agree with them. I don’t need a camera to see the gear.

A classmate of mine was working that flight. Well done to the pilots and ATC to get the plane down safely.

Wonder if any pilots or controllers on here can clarify the likely reason they didn't do a low approach before coming in for the final. Heard the tower suggest or ask about performing a low approach at least twice starting at around 6:00 and did not hear a clear rationale for their apparently declining it.

Interesting one. Surprised that with a potential nose gear issue we didn't hear them requesting emergency equipment standing by. However, when they turned off onto GG, then Bravo, then frequency change, controllers indicated that emergency equipment would be monitoring. Perhaps everything got coordinated offline.

didn't they declare mayday? won't they be prepared with emergency measures in the airport with that declaration?

I watched this happen on PlaneFinder and wondered what the emergency and diversion was - interesting to hear the accompanying audio now and put it all together.

@@billvill61he said it because he thought he needed to lol. They dont have to say the words “mayday mayday mayday”. But a lot of people, airline pilots included, feel its part of the process. It surely doesnt hurt lol. ATC can even declare an emergency on your behalf if you dont.

This was a blessing to watch while seeing a potentially catastrophic situation being navigated as cool as cucumbers by all. At the same time, I'm stressed over a bunch of stupid things. Thank you for sharing this. ❤
