I love how the crew conducted the situation. They were calm collective and assertive. Good work

Is this yet another case of a plane having residual effects after deicing??? We saw a Hawker leaving TEB and a Challenger 650 leaving BOS that both had the exact same situation. Crews called they had smoke and then shortly after the smoke is gone. Both other cases were this winter when deicing condition existed.

This type of emergency in mountainous terrain is extremely dangerous.

"need vectors for immediate return" gives vectors for immediate return "We need vectors to troubleshoot"... come on.

Isn't that the logical order of doing things? Prepare for the worst situation, memory items and all and only then reassess and plan acccordingly? In a mayday the pilots tell atc what they need and these seemed quite clear to me...

It's "smoke oh shit we're on fire" to "smoke somewhat gone, let's figure stuff out, but keep us close"

Exactly. If you have smoke or fumes of an unknown source, you land as soon as possible.

I am AMAZED the controller did not keep asking the pilot to repeat himself, especially after the MAYDAY call
