Mayday - The Invisible Plane - SAS 686

A heavy fog blankets Milan’s Linate Airport as SAS Flight #686 prepares for a routine flight to Copenhagen. Facing almost zero-visibility, the pilots rely entirely on ground controllers as they navigate into position for takeoff. The plane accelerates down the runway, but moments after lifting off it collides with a Cessna in its path. The Cessna erupts in flames. The MD-87 slams to the ground and slides into an airport hangar. The plane explodes on impact. It is the worst accident in Italian aviation history and the investigation uncovers a shocking series of errors. In the aftermath, an airport is transformed and those deemed responsible are sentenced in court.

The most interesting part is the investigations found that the pilots of both planes had no fault. They were following instructions the best they could. The passenger jet was even said to have been totally unflyable after the collision, yet the pilots were able to get the plane airborne for nearly 10 seconds. Plus it was found that those in the cessna had still been alive, but died from the subsequent fire because rescue crews were delayed, and because no one knew there was a second plane for nearly half an hour. A real tragedy.

this disaster was the result of the fucked up gears of the airport ( no ground radar , lack of runway marking etc .) . Very sad .

You do not understand. I witnessed myself the thickest fog ever in milan, while driving. This kind of fog is typical there during winter. When it happens, you really cannot see a thing, there's no sun light, it all turns grey, it's like entering in another dimention. In this case, in 2001, planes shouldn't have flown at all whit this weather condition.

@@n3493 if the airport systems were actually were working it would have been a better outcome. Both pilots on the SAS flight were trained and certified for those conditions and the plane was made for it, the pilots in the Cessna were however not certified for those conditions. But with the airport systems in place and working and the controllers have had a refreshing course in the last 20 years (which they had not) it would likely not have been a problem and everyone alive.

North South signs painted wrong on the turmac, a point S-4 painted that is nowhere in the airport plan, radar never unpacked still in the box, small planes usually crossing runways, police investigating not airport authorities who moved the wreckage away. Italy at its best
