My dad lost a close friend on Flight 182. Dr Ramachandran Balasubramanian. He was a professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. He flew from Fredericton to Montreal where he boarded Flight 182. The University of New Brunswick later created a scholarship in his name for Electrical Engineering students. RIP Dr Balasubramanian and the other 328 people that tragically lost their lives.

If you're holding a Bomb detector And it does not activate with the other luggages. And you come across one that it activates regardless of what the sound was like. The luggage should have been pulled immediately... The ticket agent and Luggage security agent Should be charged with man slaughter.. If the man was that pushy about placing wanted on a plane she should have called security and had the luggage checked with the man in front of her.

I’m Canadian, and when I was in Grade 1 I read a scholastic book called Air Disasters, and they included this flight, as well as KAL 007, Iran Air 655, Ramstein Airshow disaster, Air Florida flight 90, British Midland 92, El Al 1862, Space Shuttle Challenger, and a few more. There was a novel I read in Grade 6 called Canadian Disasters, which also included Air India 182 and the Narita bombing. 😥

Air India Flight 182 was the deadliest attack against an airliner until 9/11. Unfortunately, the lessons of Flight 182 were not learned even in its immediate aftermath when Pan Am Flight 102 and UTA Flight 772 both were brought down by bombs within a year of each other. Like Flight 182, the two flights had their bombs placed by a passenger who never boarded the plane.

In 2015,Metrojet Flight 9268 was also brought down by a bomb. However, in this case, ISIS had managed to persuade a relative of one of their members to do it since the relative was a ground crew agent at the airport.

For anyone wondering, the bomber was arrested and prosecuted in Canada. However, due to some loophole in Canadian law he was released around 5 years ago. He ended up serving 30 years if I remember correctly.

This was so dumb, when the bomb detector made a weird sound repeatedly on on a bag they should of pulled it or at least looked into it. I'm not sure why they cared if the sound wasn't exactly the same as what they were shown with a match, something was clearly tripping the bomb detector.

Arguably it happened twice. Black boxes only transmit for a certain amount of time. The mix up over the higher frequency could have cost them the black boxes (as far as I know the ocean floor does not produce radio waves? So what in heaven's name did they think it was?!)

It’s actually not uncommon for parents to travel separately so that in any event one parent would survive. I think that many could agree, regardless of statistics (and I’m a statistician), some have more fear of death (vs. injury like most car accidents) in air travel vs. auto.

The families of the dead said the Canadian government didn't seem to care about them at all and sent their condolences to India even though nearly all of the passengers on board were Canadian citizens. They said it was the people of Ireland that were so welcoming and kind to them when they came to pick up their remains in Cork.

Also, if she was worried about the other people in line, still waiting to check their baggage, just have the guy step to side to "wait for his brother" while you work on checking in the rest of the line. The worst that could happen is he'll try to complain to management, and still be told he cannot check in his bag. I cannot stand customers who bully or browbeat just to get their way. If security were to be involved that day, the fake passenger would've been caught.

I just wish someone in line behind the bullying "passenger" had spoken up in defense of the ticket agent. If just one person had said, "Stop bullying her, she's not going to check your bag through and that's that! Now get out of line!" I'm sure she wouldn't have caved. Several times I've spoken up for people in service positions when they were being bullied by a customer, and the customer always backs off once they realize they're outnumbered and there's someone talking back to them who they can't report to the manager.

My grandparents were flying from toronto to london that day on a different flight, this scared the crap out of my mom as she had no idea what was going on, their flight was only about an hour behind this flight. It is also a 2 hour drive from Heathrow to their home so she had hours to wait to hear from them.

Unfortunately, terrorists are still trying to find ways to bomb airplanes and sometimes they have succeeded like Pan Am 103 and Metrojet 9268. The most recent bombing was on Daallo Airlines Flight 159 in 2016. However, they managed to land safely. The sole fatality was the bomber himself.

A tragedy that never should've happened. The ticket agent should never have interlined the bag to New Dehli, and the bag should not have been put on the plane in Toronto. On top of that, Reyat, the guy who built the bomb, was released out of Canadian prison a few years ago, which is an absolute disgrace in my view. The fact there were two people who fell from the sky into the water that were likely alive just horrifies me. Rest In Peace to all those poor souls. Lata Pada is truly a strong and amazing woman.

I would imagine if they didn’t lose consciousness during decompression they blacked out on the fall down. If somebody knows they’re about to die, usually the brain shuts off all sensory inputs as to not suffer or feel pain.

I think what's even more devastating about this crash is the fact that airlines and governments across the world didn't take more safety measures to prevent tragic plane bombings. Pan Am 103 was bombed 3 years after this flight and it crashed into the civilian community of Lockerbie killing over 250 people both on the plane and on the ground. So many people had to die in order for these lessons to be learned.

There is another documentary which talks about the pilots of other planes who told the tower that they saw a plane exploding in midair - why were they making such a mystery of what might have happened to Air India ?

When I was a teenager, I had a par time job. This fellow was supposed to be on this flight. His mom and dad last minute didn’t go. His grandmother was on that flight. Unreal when he told me. Felt terrible for his grandmother and all those other people.

@@theforceofdistruction9446 TSA, while an effective method of preventing attacks from ever reaching airplanes proper, often they focus in on people who are not terrorists, by pulling over every single person with the same name as a listed suspect, wasting the "suspect's" time and reducing faith in the system. They need a better system than racial profiling and name-matching. The most effective tools they use are the sniffer dogs (which can miss things) and the x-ray machines (which can show "Suspicious items" that turn out not to be suspicious). We need security, but perhaps a different level of it.

Ok so I work for the Airlines and there aren’t “stricter” restrictions on carrying bags forward on connecting flights. I’ve non reved many times and my bag will hop plane to plane even if I’m not on it. Same for so many passengers who find their bags here before they are or even more that arrive and their bags didn’t arrive with them. Probably 70% of standby passengers arrive with their bags having already been here or not yet arrived. There’s no “stricter” regulations as far as that goes for sure.

It only applies to international flights, I'm a ramp agent at Terminal 3 Toronto Pearson, we only pull bags if a passenger doesn't show if the flight is international, if it's domestic, off it goes.

FYI a “flail” injury is NOT an injury to the pelvis, etc….it is a term - “flail chest” - used to describe rib fractures - more specifically, multiple fractures to three or more consecutive ribs. This causes the chest to become unstable and to move in a paradoxical manner, in that attempts to breathe cause the chest wall to move inward, rather than outward on each inspiration. This impedes breathing, and when severe, impairs effective respiration altogether.

I remember the morning this tragedy happened so vividly.Having woken up early after hosting a farewell party in Ireland as I was soon departing to Australia I turned on the morning news and we found out immediately about the Air India 747 that had just crashed off the south west coast.This news sounded surreal in the early morning light..RIP to all those victims of this awful tragedy.

No baggage leaves without a passenger tied to it? The amount of baggage that I’ve had get lost or forgotten and then get put on another plane to show up later is incredible. That rule obviously didn’t stand.

It does. You would know if you've ever sat at the gate while they retrieve luggage from the hold because somebody didn't show up. I've had it happen a few times Human error in baggage handling is a separate issue.

I remember that morning when I lived in county Cork. Ireland had never experienced such a tragic event and the hospitals and rescue services were overwhelmed. I never knew what happened until I saw this documentary. I remember the families coming to Ireland for memorial services. The whole thing was horrible and felt beyond tragic that innocent people had to be recovered from the ocean and identified in our local hospitals. RIP to all those that were lost that morning.

I saw someone comment that they didn't understand why there was such a long winded investigation when other planes reported that they saw the plane explode. I know it seems odd, but just like in a homicide investigation done by a police department, they have to rule out every single possibility so that others won't come back and question their outcome. And an explosion may be cause by the fuel in the tanks igniting, it could be an after effect of an explosive decompression, there could be many answers. Every answer has to be ruled out before they come to a final conclusion. Also, I've seen a lot of people mentioned the fact that Canada didn't really seem to treat this as a Canadian occurrence, and I understand partly that it was an Air India plane and there were Indian passengers, but the fact that there were Canadian passengers and they barely seem to acknowledge it really blows my mind.

That's two entirely avoidable disasters, had basic procedures been duly followed! Knowing the AI182 was due to land in LHR, it's even more shocking that the Lockerbie disaster was allowed to happen just 3 years later...
