Hard to imagine Franz Joseph I as a young guy. Mason perfect in the role. There's something still so appealing about the Old Vienna of that glittering, vanished period in history. The aristocratic ladies of that time were pretty charming & appealing, too!

There's a scene in the movie where Franz Joesph I, played, as seen here, by James Mason, one of my favorite actors, where he's asked about the Army's request to change the buttons on their coats, which would be far more practical. Mason, the autocratic ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, refuses, stating that he'll never endorse "change for change's sake", rejecting the proposal out-of-hand. There's something to be said for such a succinct philosophy, especially in this unstable, constantly changing world in which we currently exist, isn't there? Obviously, of course, it can be taken to extremes. Yes, Franz Joseph I was, by the time of "Mayerling", an aging, out-of-touch autocrat but, on the other hand, a little autocracy never hurt anyone, did it? I mean, not really. After all, anyone who has a slice of Antarctica named after him couldn't've been all bad!

Real life: 1853 in Vienna, by a Hungarian. Unlike the film cllip FJ was walking, not riding in a carriage with his daughter-in-law. (His wife, Sissi, frequently shirked her royal duties) An anarchist did manage to kill FJ's wife, Elizabeth (known as "Sissi" -- Rudolf's mother) in 1898 while she was traveling (what she thought was in a state of incognito, with only her lady-in-waiting) in Geneva Switzerland. The guy just wanted to kill a royal or noble and he had missed the chance to murder another high-ranking person prior to stabbing Sissi to death.

@@here_we_go_again2571 Well, you would be right about the situation in Galicia. Many peasants were illiterate and starved due famines and food shortages. There was mass emigration from Galicia to other Austro-Hungarian crown lands (some even moved to Krakow & Lviv, the best places of Galicia) and countries (most notably the US). Galicia also had overpopulation issues with poor countries today like Nigeria.
@TheAustrianAnimations87 Жыл бұрын
@@sorkvild1473 This is just wrong. Poverty was only extreme in Galicia, but other parts such as Austria itself (not just Vienna) and the industrial Bohemia were rich. Even poorer parts in the east & south were still bearable to live, it was only really awful in Galicia. And in no way was Austria-Hungary "rebellious". The last time revolutions happened in Austria was in 1849, can you name one from 1867 to 1917? The Ottomans lost their Balkan territories, Russia already had a revolution in 1905. Nothing similar happened in Austria-Hungary though. Most people liked the Austro-Hungarian monarchy (except non-Hungarians in Hungary). Even Bosnians liked the monarchy for all the religion rights and infrastructure they got. Princip belonged to the tiny minority who hated the monarchy. So don't believe all the anti-Austro-Hungarian propaganda spread here.
