Just in the perspective of who Gildarts is to Natsu makes that so horrifying for the boy. Sure he vowed to one day beat Gildarts but he never realized deep down just what he was up against. Then he sees Gildarts the way an enemy sees him. An unstoppable force of nature that will strike him down the moment he moves. It's gotta really be a mind feck to see a father / mentor figure look at you like that and you realize you have no chance of victory at all.

This battle is a huge matter for this anime. Up until now, Natsu has been UNCONQUERABLE. No matter what, he would always step up to you and fight until he won or was unconscious. Gildarts simply showed an aura of energy. He didn't even fight, and completely broke Natsu. Good Lord, I wonder what Gildarts is like when he's not messing around. And you can't tell me Natsu didn't wet himself just then. We all know he did.

i know this comment is 1 month old, but i want to comment to it, so I hope there will be a Situation in which Natsu will top Gildarts, but this situation should be a Fight against an Guild from somewhere i don't know ^^ But they would be so strong that even gildarts itself can barely handle the lower ranked Guild Members of this new Guild, and after he has "domitated" them, the Guild Master will appear, and he would be way stronger as they would ever imagine, and Natsu will release his ultimate Powser of the Dragon Slayers (Somthing like the Power in the Magic Games) and will defeat him with an incredible Power, which would surprise Gildarts extremly, shortly , i would love to see an Destruction like DBZ :D But i hope there will be much heavier fights in the continued Story of Fairy Tail, and after this discribed Fight, Gildarts will test Natsu again, and this would be one of the most Epic fight ever. And the only other person who'd be strong enough to take down the 'new guild' would be Zeref. I think when the new series resumes where it left off; a dragon should appear and Natsu tells it to fuck off or something in Draconic. Probably will xD

But Natsu can lear and improve a lot more than Gildarts can in a year, he is still young, Gildarts is an older man, it's harder for him to grow in strenght thana young teenager, since he is already pretty close to his limit. "Can't teach an old dog new tricks", or something along those lines.

This fight improved Natsu by a great deal! "You walk the path of magic, but to reach its Summit", You have to know one thing, "Fear". Natsu defeats a God Slayer after his encounter with Gildarts, then obliterates Master Hades with Lightning Flame Dragons Roar, learns 2nd Origin, and now he's facing the 2 Dragon Slayers of Sabretooth! Can't wait to see how the anime pulls out in episode 174!

The only thing acnolgia has is the ability to swallow different magic so he can consume his flames

Natsu can be the strongest wizard in Fiore. Don't forget he is probably the strongest Dragon Slayer out there since his "Father" was and I quote: "The King of Fire Dragons". And Dragon Slayers are supposed to have the power to slay dragons, but you can't expect them to beat dragons right away! They need to train and a LOT! it may take up to YEARS before Natsu could take Gildarts or a dragon. However, once Natsu surpasses someone, that someone can't surpass Natsu. If Natsu had the power to slay dragons right from when the show started, Jellal wouldn't last HALF A SECOND when Natsu went Dragon Force on him, same with Laxus and Gildarts, Gildarts fought a dragon and lost the battle, if Natsu was this strong he could take on Gildarts and probably beat him. Remember this: Natsu has the GREATEST potential to become the strongest (YES STRONGER THAN MAKAROV and maybe even Zeref!).

The dragon gildarts fought wasn't an ordinary dragon, just walking away from that fight alive proves gildarts is quite possibly the strongest in the anime right now. But natsu does have the most potential, he also has the protagonist bonus, hes the main character so of course he'll have to become the strongest (just look at ichigo lol)
