Way to make a viewer feel old RK, imo when it's used in an ignition system it's a condenser lmao. When we got a new apprentice at work, we used to charge them up, throw them across the workshop and yell catch! The other one we used to do was pull the HT lead off the spark plug, stand on a rubber floor mat with your finger in the end of the lead, call the lads over and ask them if they can see why there's a misfire, as soon as they as they grounded themselves leaning over the engine, you'd grab their ear lobe. 😂

Good to see you keeping amused Mate! Just a couple of things you might? like to say, or others read on here. A condenser is basically a rechargeable battery. Also A series BMC engines (Minis, Morris 1000s etc) always could see the copper when you took the shells out of the mains and big ends on the crank. It was just that big end reminded me.
@davesage91907 жыл бұрын
Capacitors like those usually have a 10 to 20 percent tolerance so you can't expect them to be right on the printed value. Anything close is good enough for your application. (all stuff I'm sure you know but worth mentioning for others).

That meter is probably bang on. It's capacitors that are off. They all have specified tolerance (sometimes even tens of percent). And last significant digit bouncing up and down is an inherent property of most digital meters (because of how analog to digital converters inside them work).

Re-stuffing capacitors is something I've not ventured into yet, looks like a "fun" process taking the old guts out and replacing them with new ones... :P

The beauty of points ignition is it makes spark energy at any RPM when it is working right. The electronic ignition on small engines needs more rpms to make spark that’s why so many old small engines will kick over with little effort when there in tune. Love the vids

Get a Uni-T multimeter, they are cheap, but hold their value, had one now for 2 going 3 years and it's perfect for throwing around in the shop, dirt, even dropped it in the mud once. As for the videos, don't be sorry about the long tangents, the process of elimination is a very good and useful tool, you showing us the whole path, and giving in depth explanations is worth a lot.

I seriously doubt it's the meter that is off. Markings on capacitors can be 20% tolerance... Unless you check the meter against some sort of standard, I think it's more likely it's the capacitor that is slightly off from its own marking.

Always a good video! Say on those castle nuts for the con rod, do they really just sit on there & expect for them to go absolutely no where with some sort of the lock washer or a washer bent back to prevent it from backing off? That cotter pin, boy I'd be concerned if they started to back off, that cotter will just shear. Have you ever had one shear & blow? Good ole may tags, can never go wrong, ya know would be fun to try washing clothes & drying them with some of this older equip & engines. Thanks for the info too!

Good vid. I love the width of those rings on these old engines. It is no wonder they rarely wear out. I found that I could get old style condensers in various configurations that match the ones on many old engines from the Brillman company. They also carry ignition parts, wiring and many electrical switches and other items. Here is a link brillman.com/ I have purchased many items from them with good results. Still waiting for an update on the Johnson twin or was it beyond help?
