UNPLUG YOUR WASHER FIRST!!! Click "Show More" for more details!
Is your washer broken? Not completing its cycles due to a repeated clicking noise? Its probably the locking mechanism that is broken. This is the information / video you can't find anywhere else, I looked.
Don't order a new lock for $60 and have a technician replace it. Fix it yourself!
Tools needed:
1/4 inch socket or flathead
Small flathead to pry open case to lock
Some tape
Hex screwdriver if you want to take off the latch and affix it permanently (highly recommended).
The fix is just removing the metal clip/tab that becomes detached and then making sure all the other parts are attached correctly. In my case the metal tab and plastic piece were both detached. I removed the metal tab and reattached everything as shown. Now the washer/lock is fixed, and goes through all cycles thinking its locked when it actually is not locked.
This is for part w10838613. www.appliancepartspros.com/whi...
My particular washer is the Kenmore 100 Series he or High Efficiency
Here are some high quality images as well.

Update: I had to replace the lock on June 2nd 2017. The Copper part found in the video at 4:10 broke. The copper wire became unraveled and I was unable to fix it. I searched ebay for the part number w10838613, and found it for $40. After replacing the lock I had to do this: Plugin the washer. Immediately put the lid latch in the lock hole and then take it out 6 times in 12 seconds Then leave the latch in on the 7th time. Then position the settings dial to Rinse/Spin and run a Rinse/Spin. This reset the lock mechanism or the computer and it started working normally. Before this the lights were just off and it wouldn't work. I now have the latch permanently in lock and can lift the lid while the washer is in use. Sorry the original fix I posted only worked for about 10 months for me and the 2 other guys that use the washer. I posted this video a couple months after I had fixed it. ALSO this was commented by Roop about a year ago and you may find it helpful! 👇👇👇👇👇 👇👇👇👇👇 "This video itself did not work for my wtw5000dw2 with a flashing lock light, but it did help me fix it: At 4:10 in this video, directly left of the solenoid (copper part) you see an angled piece of metal. This is part of a mechanism that detects the door being closed. The white plastic which pushes on this switch mechanism was broken in my washer. If I manually move the broken piece of plastic I can see it causes two pieces of metal to touch. What I did was forced this switch closed, by forcing the two pieces of metal touch. This fixed my lock light flashing. Right after this I was able to use this washer again. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX_CinaJg9-cjsU has a video of the manual which was also very helpful."

I'm the guy maintenance calls when nobody else can fix it, but I'll be darned if I could get this stink'n switch to work!!! Pain in the rear to get that darn spring put back in when you didn't see how it came apart. Then I watch this vid. As soon as you said to get rid of the spring, I could have kicked myself. Works like a champ now. Thanks!!!! I'll be sharing this video every time I get the chance!!!

You sir, are amazing. Simple fix that worked, clear instructions. With a screwdriver and 7mm wrench I took the mounting screws off(on my amana washer, could be different on someone else's), took the metal clip out of the housing with pliers and replaced everything. In short, in worked, and I really needed this win. Thank you.

This does not work if there is corrosion on any of the main terminals. The metal that connects to the main wires. Other than that fact and the 90’s type wobble with the filming. This was still the most helpful after 15 other videos and I was fortunate to drain and spin out the cycle of needed towels. Have to get a new lock mechanism set because of the stupid corrosion. That being said. Props dude. And thank you.

Saved me! Washer is only a year and a half old and just didn't turn on one day, no lights or anything. Model wtw4816fw2. Unplugged the lock wires from the board and gave me the slack to pull out the lock from inside, then pulled the metal clip. Took a couple times of putting it back in to get it work work, but your picture of it let me know how to put the tiny pieces back together! Thanks Dan!

It was a little tough to figure out what pieces go where to reassemble, but after about 20 min of tinkering I got it and it's working flawlessly, thank you so much. My problem started when I pulled up on my locked lid due to a lop sided load in the spin cycle, you saved me a lot of $ and only caused a slight headache 🙃🤣🤣 again, THANK YOU!!!!

Brilliant! I did this on my Maytag Centennial and although the plastic lock case looked different, the little metal spring I removed looked exactly like the one in your video. The only difficulty I had was reassembling the whole mechanism because when I took the plastic cover off, all the pieces flew out before I had a chance to see how they were put together. Took a minute to figure it out, but apparently I did it right because now the washer is working. The best part is that now the lid no longer locks and I can open the $#%&* lid whenever I want to!

I fixed this issue for my Amana washer model: NTW4516FW2 but I did it a little differently. In this video he talks about removing the metal clip but I just removed the plastic piece he fidgets with at 5:00 on instead. When putting it back together I made sure the metal switch wasn't in the contact position. The lock light came on then it actually started spinning for the first time (just bought it) when I tested it in "drain/spin" mode. One thing to note is that the red and white wires in my model were opposite of where they were in this video (not sure if that matters). My lock light wasn't coming on at all but now it does. Thanks Dan H for showing the world what to do!

Just a couple comments to add. First, my “locking mechanism” broke because I was impatient with the washer and opened the lid too early. This is really easy to do-so be careful because it results in this clstrfk of a mess. First thing of note, with this fix implemented, the washer’s lid will still trigger the safety shutdown. As far as I can tell, there’s no operational difference. Second, it seems two variables are key in order for this to work. The first is to get that long silver V/shaped piece of metal out of the locking contraption. It came out of mine before opening the cover to the unit-but I believe you’ll still want to open that cover anyway because of variable two. The second essential part is to make sure the rotating latch, shown at 4:43 results in closing the circuit (i.e. the small lever is in the lowest connecting position). This should mean a “turn” to the left. *When your washer broke, it might’ve not left the rotating lever in the connecting position-so this is why I think you need to open the crappy black plastic box. (I think the towel is a good idea-this cheap mechanism can be put back together quite easy should it sort of fall apart.) Lastly, when looking down on this component (as seen in 4:43) there appear to be two places that form a complete circuit for electricity to travel through. As mentioned above, you rotate the pin so that the right side connects-but on the left side (where the push of a lever connects the circuit) don’t worry about it. The latch (that almost surely is still connected to the lid of the washing machine) will force that circuit closed when you shut the lid. So, make sure those two variables above are correct, and when you put it all back together it should work. As an aside, my parents got a set of Maytag washer and driers when they were married. They lasted for over 30 years without any problems. The “Maytag” version of this washer looks like it couldn’t have had one more penny cut out of its materials and manufacture. Sad to see this garbage build quality with the Maytag name on it now. 🤷‍♂️

Dan H Thanks! I might do that. After fixing the latch mechanism the first time (following your instructions) the washer was basically dead the next time I went to use it (my roommate had used it last, so I had no idea what could’ve happened to kill the washer). I tried the reset code that you can find on KZbin (start at 12 o’clock, turn left one, right 3, left one, right one) to enter the service menu. A hour of dking around got me nowhere. So, reluctantly, I took the whole thing apart again to look at the latch assembly. When I opened it up, it looked like the “U” shaped metal arm had somehow come out of the piston (?) part of the solenoid. I was able to delicately reassemble it thanks to your closeup look at the whole mechanism, as well as you demonstrating how it worked. I put it back together absolutely not expecting it work, since logically it didn’t seem like I’d done anything to affect the circuit, and it had been completely non responsive. But, praise be, it actually started working again. *I don’t know if this made a difference, but I did perform the “reset” via the service menu, and also, before trying to starting the machine for the first time, I held in the “start” button before plugging the washer into the wall-and I kept the button pressed after plugging it in for about 20 seconds. The door light flashed red, and it *appeared* like *maybe* something had been reset. I don’t know. My roommate is a five foot delicate Mexican girl, and she manhandles everything in the house while cursing in up a storm in Spanish. I don’t understand her, or this f-ing washing machine, but thanks again for providing the only helpful video on KZbin for this insane (and apparently common) problem. If you add a patreon link or some other type of electronic payment link in your description (maybe add a pop-up box at the end of your video too) I’d be more than happy to throw a donation your way. You definitely deserve it. Thank you!

Thanks man, I didnt use this fix but you gave me an idea where I used a magnet and a hair tie...needless to say 60 bucks plus tech fee would've added up to about 5-6 mths of detergent for me..God bless my man.

Going to attempt this tonight. My washer just keeps clicking and won't lock! Can't get anything done and I almost bought a whole new locking mechanism. Hoping this works and my boyfriend is impressed with me 😂

Problem is that with this switch, you can't wire around it. The control board wants to see the signal turn on and off as the solenoid engages and disengages so it knows when it's broken.

3:20 I just took out the black plastic piece below the red wire so the metal would stay touching. Now the lid thinks it’s always locked. I was a little worried about safety but if you lift the lid the washer stops at least on my model. This video pointed me in the right direction

So does this bypass the lock and start cycles? Also, I noticed on the black lid lock the spring was so damaged this is where I think the fatal flaw is.
