Washing Machine Fills Then Stops - Lid ByPass

Don't you hate it when you fill up the washing machine, add detergent and a whole bunch of dirty clothes......suddenly it decides to stop working. You see, the lid switch keeps the center agitator from working when the lid is open. When it fails, (usually it is after the machine fills and is now ready to start agitating the laundry) there is a quick patch or fix that will get you along your way while you wait for the new part to come in. You would think they would make machines that won't fill up either when the switch fails. NOPE! So you are stuck with a full machine. Well this is a quick fix for just that situation. This video is for educational purposes and if you attempt to do this, it is at your own risk. The safety switch is there for a reason, but I thought I would show you what I did. Also....there are lots of reasons why a machine will stop working. I always try to work on the easier things before tackling the harder.

Karen, you rock !!! I had this same problem about 10 yrs ago and the service tech charged me $189 just to replace the switch. I'm handy with fixing cars and things around the house but I didn't know what the washer issue was. Well, tonight, the washing machine went out again and I was about to order another switch but after watching your video, you helped me save time and money doing this hack. MY clothes are washing now. Thank you, lady !!!

Thank you, Karen, for teaching us how to bypass the safety switch. My switch on my GE washer cost $57 to replace which is quite pricey. The information you have provided enables us that cannot afford the overpriced part to be able to use our machine!

Sunday of Memorial Day weekend 2020 and the washer DID STOP before draining for the rinse & spin. Of course it was full of clothes & water. I am 75 years old and thinking where will I find a part or even a repair man. I found you on KZbin after 3 others where the guys showed how to unclog the pump or tie the switch together with electrical ties. I saw your video which said Lid ByPass and all of a sudden it clicked (not the switch but my old mid). About a month ago I did a bypass on my zero turn mower and instant back to work. Your video helped me fumble my way through taking the machine apart, doing the jump & back together. Took about 20 mins. Worked beautiful & clothes are done. Most of all wife is thrilled. I may even get lucky this weekend.

Well Karen, you were right, it was a faulty switch that caused the washer to stop after filling. I did, however lose an arm and a leg from that pesky spinning gizmo but I've got lots of duct tape in the garage and should be good to go soon. But seriously, thanks for the fix, really worked like a charm.

Thank you so much for this video! I've managed to bypass the door switch on my washer while I wait for the new one to arrive so I can finish my laundry and get the swamp water smell out of my house. As an appliance repairman I bypass these all the time. I just unscrew the switch, pull out the wires from underneath and cut them RIGHT AT THE SWITCH, strip away the insulation and insert the bare wires into a small grey wire nut and twist until tight. No need to take the machine apart.

Thank you so much! My washer is over 10 years old but works fine other than this problem. I have tried unsuccessfully to buy a replacement switch so have now bypassed it. I don't have young children and I don't want to unnecessarily spend $100s or even $1,000s on a new machine if I don't have to. I also dislike the new machines that have so many unneeded electronic parts--just more to go wrong, IMHO. The hardest part of this was removing a rusted screw from the front cover to open it!

carole on a friends profile , this was so easy to follow , slightly different catch for the rubber seal, and the back of the hinge fell into the washer cabinet , so beware but easy enough to rescue and now i have a fixed washer door. The switched part never really worked without a swift kick , so obviously the handle was going to break eventually. Better than new.

My Mom & I both bought GE washers (with a yr or 2 of one another) & we've both had the SAME EXACT ISSUE!! Your "fix it" tip is a life saver - TY 🙌 My tip?? DON'T BUY a mid-level GE Washer unless you're fond of replacing the lid switch 🙄 My washer was replaced under warranty with a brand new unit that had the same problem 🤦🏼‍♀️

I could use your help. I have a Kenmore 90 Series washer. After completing one load of wash I started a second. The tub filled with water, agitated then stopped. No matter what setting I put it in nothing happens. No humming, nothing. Another Kenmore 90 series washer was given to me. It agitated but no spin. After checking it out it was only a loose wire. Plugged it in & it went through the cycles. Put a load of cloths in & the only cycle that will now work is the spin. Any help on either one of these would be appreciated. I did notice same series but different timer control model. I did check the lid switch, both are good. I even jumped them to make sure. Also on the first one I installed a new controller. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Joe Z

Good video IF your problem is your lid switch. Set to spin with the lid down. If it works, it's not your lid switch. Mine was the pressure switch. Pressed it and it worked. Check it before cutting apart your wiring. It tells the machine to agitate when the basin is full.

Could you explain where the pressure switch is? I need to add that to my arsenal of knowledge.

Sure. You will see a clear (usually) rubber hose leading up from where it attaches on the lower side of the barrel. I think you can see your hose at 4:29 of your video. It's clear. At the top of the hose, you will find it attaches to a switch. Mine is on the left side of the control panel. It looks like yours might be in the same place. This is the pressure switch. When the water fills, it builds pressure that clicks the switch. Mine has a little metal button that you can press to click the switch on and off. Mine had a bit of corrosion. (We're in SW Florida and the laundry is in the garage.) I pressed it three or four times and then plugged in the washer. It started right away. (We've done 7 or more loads of laundry since.) The pressure switch tells the timer that the barrel is full and it can start agitating. I'll make a video and send you the link. I figured it out after a few hours of troubleshooting, trying everything else, sweating and swearing, driving the capacitor over to an appliance store 35 minutes away to get it tested, refusing the new $25 one the guy wanted to sell me, bypassing the lid switch, all the while figuring it was something simple. It was. Always is... :)

Hi Karen, As my, probably 15 yr old, washer is no longer under warranty w/manufacturer and no longer under warranty w/my Dad (Could fix anything Dad) who passed 3 yrs ago "Thank you". Thank you for the safety disclosure and the consult on a temp adjustment in order to complete the washer's cycle. When I phone the Repair Tech. (ha ha),...and wait...and wait...and wait...and wait for them, an empty washer would be easier to complete the COSTLY time & materials repair of such a CHEAPLY made but IMPORTANT and NECESSARY for SAFETY Lid Switch. I did have a question about the switch; the pressure applied by lid peg to trigger switch; etc.....but then I stopped absent mindedly over-thinking (cuz I'm human) & remembered how the switch is temporarily bypassed...so I proceeded over to Dad's (now my) workbench for a flathead screwdriver, wire clips/stripper, wire cap & tape. My Dad, Robert, smiling proudly would've said, "Good job Karen! Good job Susan! You know, as the world becomes faster paced, generations seem to forget people contribute to technology advancing not vice versa...but that's derived from common sense which is often forgotten too!". Thank you, again....Susan & Family. ☺

Hi Karen, Thank you, again for your video! As I have no current/existing warranty on my Sears Kenmore 70 series washer. Last evening, I successfully completed this temporary by-pass Lid Switch (manufacturer installed for the safety of the user or any person opening washer lids while unit is powered on, and in operational cycles) until the switch I ordered arrives. I am and have been the decidedly sole user of this washer in my home. In my experience of years, I have re-signed 1 floor fan and nothing else, so I was a bit nervous completing this, not due to my inexperience with some trial items, it was my agony of possible defeat which was nerve racking. Hilariously, I had 6 days of me working up my own courage!!! LOL No kidding, I was incredibly nervous after I took side covers & removed the screws, I started sweating like Richard Simmons after Sweating to the Oldies, LOL. All too approx. 45 min., from start to finished, even with stopping to breath a few mins. in between. After complete reassemble, plugging into outlet and finishing with the spin cycle.....my eyes welled with tears of joy! It is the small accomplishments which a person never thought they'd find themselves in a place to accomplish, that does bring another good moment to my table of joy in life. Have a great day! Thank you, again! Susan

You were about done at 5:30 when you pulled the two halves apart. Leave all the lower wiring intact so it's good for reversing the procedure. Figure out what two make the circuit and just use a small wire jumper on the upper plug. You can remove the jumper and plug it back it AND NO ONE WOULD EVER KNOW. You have to maintain warranties while being mischievous! Good fix.

If the machine is still under warranty, you don't have to do this. Just have the company send you a new one or repair it for free. This technique is for people who don't have a warranty and don't want to pay a repair man or buy a new one.
