Maytag Washer F5 error - cheap fix

A cheap way to fix the Maytag F5 error.

Whirlpool corp continues to make crappy appliances. Unfortunately they have figured out that they make more money if they make them to last 7 years (or less). This washer lid was a horrible engineering design. Whoever came up with this lid at Whirlpool headquarters should be fired immediately. I've noticed they fixed it in the refresh model. I already had to replace the lid, cost me $200. Washer is 2 years old.

It's not just Whirpool. It's ALL of them. They design them to last 5 years.

I fixed mine, at least for a while. I made sure there were no materials in the lock pocket. (Ya know, little pellets of Downy Unstoppable’s-well it’s easy for those little things to drop in that pocket, and stoppable your washing machine). I unplugged the washing machine from the electrical outlet. I took a needle nose pliers and pulled the little off white lock, gently. Pushed it in and out just to see if any material was stopping it. Like making sure the little lock will come out and back in easily. Then I closed the lid, plugged the machine back in. Restarted the load. On the second try, the lock engaged successfully all by itself, and the machine started washing my clothes. Gunk/whatever could have possibly got stuck in there and the little plastic lock couldn’t slide out. It’s washing my clothes now, and I didn’t buy a new machine, hire a repairman, or replace a part. So, we’ll see if it gives me any more trouble. Hey Maytag, bad place for a pocket lock. Lint, detergent, Unstoppables can get in there and stop the plastic part from sliding in and out!

I just started punching the door near the latch and it opened up. Gotta make sure the plastic thing where the detergent goes into is very clean and theres no pellets of dried up detergent stuck in there so make sure it goes all the way in and its always clean. Somehow mine made the door latch get stuck and just wouldn't open. I don't have the exact Maytag machine but I was getting the same F5 code. Im sticking to tide pods now and hopefully the issue is done. Re-started my machine and its washing great right now.

So how do I pop out the lock like you did? I can’t really slide out the little plastic lock to attach the washer

Need to take a wire coat hanger and reach up under the front of the lid and slide the white plastic latch out of the way.

I used a knife tip and pulled it out lol but it's still giving error code and not starting, quit working in the beginning of the rinse cycle.

Open u lid. N look inside where lock is .there are 2screw. Try unscrew one side n place the lock right n screw it back . It work for mine to stop f5

I ran into the same issue, I unplugged it, used my fists, and drummed on the bottom gently until the lid until the lock disengaged when I plugged it in. So as soon as you plug it back in, drum on that middle section GENTLY with your fists. Repeat the process until the lock releases. Not standard but just so your washer wont hold your dirty clothes hostage. Im having the same problem now and Im just going to replace the lock latch.

How did you stop all the beeping to get it to stay on.

On ours it beeps while it has the F5 error. Unplug it and wait for a few minutes it will eventually stop. With it unplugged you can do the rest of the work.
