To those of you watching these repair videos and desperate for a washing machine.. keep your eyes out for early model Kenmore/Whirlpool direct drive washers. They are super easy to fix DIY and very reliable. I have made a nice side living picking up washing machines and dryers that people set out when it's large item trash day. Most other old school machines (non computer) are easy to fix. Unfortunately, Repair guys have expenses and have to charge the rates that they do. On some transmissions, internal parts are hard to find or even not available, coupled with the time that a technician has to spend to remove the transmission, take it apart, reassemble and reinstall. That type of repair can only by done by a DIY who is willing to spend the time and search for parts. The other alternative is spend $800 for a new computerized machine of questionable longevity.

You're absolutely right. Bought an old direct drive whirlpool at an estate sale for $25. It had a bad clutch. Replaced it myself in about 40 min. The dang thing has been running now for eleven years with no issues. It must have been eight years old when I bought it. Since then I found another direct drive for free, repaired it, and have that set up in the garage as a backup....large family! The longevity of these newer model washers now days are horrible, and they're expensive to repair.

Initially water will not spin or pump out, motor briefly hums, smells. Turns out motor is not turning the belt, smells of rubber, black rubber residue comes off on hand, belts smooth n shiny. When the belt is removed the motor only turns briefly with a hum then stops. Motor turns freely n easily, no looseness, no up n down motion, no resistance or roughness. Same for transmission ( center large pulley) Same for water pump. How easy should the motor slide on plastic bushings n bolts on bottom of motor be? I'm guessing the motor slide bolts need a little tightening and a new belt. Do you concur? Thanks

On the type of machine shown, does the electric motor rotate in one direction to agitate, then rotate in the other direction to spin? I just don't understand how one motor, and one belt can perform two different functions. I am trying to troubleshoot my trans, but don't know how it functions!

I have an older model Maytag Atlantis that stopped working in the middle of a washing cycle leaving full load of clothes and water together. I had to drain my clothes by hand (sucks) and then scoop several gallons of dirty water out of the washer manually. I've checked the power outlet and all was good. The power strip did not tripped neither. It seemed as though I have some type of power failure within the internal components of the washer. What can be the problem? I don't want to waste $2000 for a brand new one at this time. What do you think is the problem? I turn on the load switch for all types of cycle but there is power to the unit. Please advised. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

There are tabs in the center of the pulley that secure it to the shaft. I broke those with a flat screwdriver and the pulley slid right off. Pay attention to where the old pulley is alligned, how much shaft is exposed, so you can get the new pulley aligned at the same height on the shaft. I had to use a socket and a small hammer to lightly tap my new pulley into place.
