Are you sure, it may not be a V6 but sometimes bank 1 can be no.1 & no.4 cylinder, with bank 2 being no.2 & no.3 cylinder

Hi Peter, I’ve just had my injectors replaced which has sorted my excessive regens (from 40-60 to about 140-200). I think I have a bad camshaft/lifters aswell. Car has no fault codes, although it didn’t have any for injectors. When first started the engine actually sounds and pulls okay, however, after a bit, particularly noticeable in a lot of traffic my power reduces at low revs, can be really hard to pull away from lights. Sounds a bit rattly and occasionally I get this tapping sound at idle or very low revs. It doesn’t sound like rod knock. At higher speeds I get a rattling sound which sounds like a maraca being shaken. Been getting louder since I got it. I also have a bit of a whine in gears 1-3 on acceleration and deceleration. I was told however that usually the vacuum pump goes if the camshaft does, but my brake booster seems to be reading correctly. I was also told it’s only the 13/14 models that had the cam issue to a material specification issue, I’m assuming that’s not true? Thanks

The exhaust camshaft fails in 2013 up to 2017 models very often, the oil pump timing chain also fails but it generally just breaks with no warning. I would call the camshaft and hydraulic tappets underneath the exhaust camshaft too. This sorts most of the ones I work on 😉🤞🤞🤞

Love your videos. I’ve got a Mazda 6 Diesel 2.2, recently suffered from the usual low oil pressure etc. I leave in the UK near London. Any chance you would know a recommended independent garage - no dealer - that would repair Mazda’s? Most garages I’ve spoken with would not touch them if possible 🤦‍♂️. Thanks!

Another very informative video thank you. I have a Mazda6 2.2 skyactiv and had a low oil pressure warning acouple weeks ago which i have been trying to sort. So far i have had the sump off and cleaned out the oil strainer it wasnt to bad but there was a couple small lumps of carbon. I have also de- carboned the inlet manifold and egr valves and finally replaced the injector seals. One was leaking. All faults are now clear but car still feels sluggish especially at low revs. Would a worn exhaust camshaft cause this? My car has 180000 km on clock. Lastly is there anyway to tell if the exhaust camsh is worn without taking the rocker cover off? Maybe a scope of some kind. TIA Jason.

Hi Jason, the exhaust camshaft is most likely worn. It is a really common failure item after 140,000 kms. You can remove the injectors and look to see if both the exhaust valves are opening on the exhaust stroke. It does save on diagnosing time

They are tightened in 2 stages, stage 1 is 6Nm & stage 2 is 11Nm 😉👍👍

Hi love your videos on these mazdas I have the same engine with p0101 my question is if the exhaust cam is worn out will the maf actually show low grams per seconds at idle through the ob2 diagnostic? I'm asking you because you have alot of experience with these engines thank you in advance

I have integrated airflow live data readings over the years & it is very hard to pinpoint the issue without rocker cover removal. They run large and strange quantities of exhaust gas recirculation. It is something I must try to prove to myself 🤔🤔🤔

hi, the videos you post are great, and very instructive. I have a question, I drive a mazda 6 2.2 skyactiv, I've been chasing p0101 for a long time along with the scbs error, the chain has been replaced, and the cam shaft in the intake manifold is clean, and the vacuum pump too was replaced and I still have the same error and on top of that, the turbo lags in delivering power after the entire repair. Do you have any advice? thanks in advance and I would love it if you continue the videos

Did you say that you have changed the exhaust camshaft??? & cleaned the intake manifold and ports ??

If so you are most likely going to have hydraulic tappets starting to fail and get soft. Hence inhibiting exhaust gas extraction or exit. This in turn compromises room for fresh air entry 😉

Hi Peter. My apologies if this is mentioned in another video, but other than the known issues of exhaust camshaft, head gasket issues and leaking copper, injector seals are there any other major issues to look out for on the pre-2017 models? I'm on 68,000 miles and have already changed the injector seals. I've owned the car for almost 2 years and it still runs very well with no fault codes (yet) However I was planning to replace the exhaust camshaft soon as a preventative measure, then deal with the head gasket whenever the time comes for that.. Hoping to hold onto the car for a while once those jobs are done.. Anything else to look out for? 2016 2.2 d. Thanks in advance

By having the injector washers done it avoids any oil strainer/ oil pressure problems on you change the oil every 10kms or 6k miles. You didn’t mention intake manifolds blocking or exhaust pressure sensor & pipe blocking. There is a pin in the turbo that snaps & the oil pump timing chains break but your mileage is a bit low to worry about those yet. Hopefully this helps 🤞🤞 let me know if you need more information 😉😉

The replacement cam shaft part number (SHY2-10-YA0) you have in the vid is for a 2017 - 2018 CX5. I thought the cam shaft lobe problems were fixed after 2016 or are you still seeing the same problems in later model 2.2 engines after 2016?

Do you think this problem is fixed with the new cam shafts? Or is it a design fault and in 120k or so you are pulling off the rocker cover and seeing the same problem?

It is a design fault & a new one will be worn again after another 120,000 kms. They rectified the issue after 2017 with a revised camshaft design

Hi Peter, I don't have any errors on exhaust camshaft but since my vacuum pump is showing error, I'm considering replacing camshaft. Found the parts for around €500, how much would replacement cost?

The car is unable to know about the condition of the camshaft & only flags P0101 air flow faults or DPF messages. It is most likely going to cost around 6 or 7 hundred to replace them. But is a well worth doing repair 😉👍👍

Hello, how much will it cost to repair the head? most likely it burst because the gas enters the cooling liquid and the cooling liquid got into the oil. And one more problem it is car in Donegal

We do cars from all over Ireland so Donegal shouldn’t be too bad on a recovery truck or would it drive. Head gasket replacement, with reconditioned head, new camshaft, new vacuum pump, pressure sensor, timing chain etc. is around €4500. Big job 😬😬

Hi Peter, can you tell me what the injector readings/range should be on idle for this engine? Mine are reading 0.594, -0.055, -0.757 and 0.167 mm3. Im guessing one or more injectors are failing? Merry Christmas and thank you for all your videos

Hi!, great video man, very informative, I have a mazda 3 2.2 manufactured in 2018 in japan... Mu question is, should I spect to have these issues also? If not... Which issues can I spect in the near future?, mine has 125.000km and a tuned ECU with arround 190hp, EGR software deleted also, I only use in the higway and travel with it for at least 150-200km, always finishing regens, monitoring it with OBD data on FAP presure, temperature and oil and coolant temperatures... Oil changes every 10.000km... Do you think I will have any issues with it at some point?... Thaks in advanced!

Also... It usually sits at 85C° on coolant temp when cruising, but in winter I can see as much as 95-97 when I step on it... One summer i saw it going up to 106°C while regen fap just cruising slow... The AC was at full blast thought... Would that affect badly?...

In 2018 they upgraded the exhaust camshaft, so depending on whether yours was built before or after the design change 🤷🏼‍♂️ We will assume after and that you are doing everything as you should, with EGR deleted you should be good 🤞🤞🤞

Another great video peter ! Any one who is changing a exhaust camshaft should check all exhaust valves are not seized up ! Recently two of my exhaust valves were properly suck with carbon while doing this replacement grrr😮

Most of them that I have been on have the exhaust valve sticking or at least slow to close. Simply due to not being opened for an extended period due to the camshaft wear. The sound really bad on first crank with no compression. But the exhaust valves & compression does come back after extended cranking. It would put the heart crossways in a fellow 😬😬😬 It did have 1 engine that simply wouldn’t turn due to them being seized solid which needed cylinder head removal 😤😤

I’m fixing all makes and models & know that they all give trouble and they all can be testing & expensive. But I think the problem with these Mazdas is that mechanics or technicians cannot find the correct fixes and the repair process goes on and on. I actually really like them 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

@@kennedysgarage3281Dealer recommended a second de-carbon at a cost of €900 which I declined as the first one only lasted 40,000 km. Throttle body and exhaust pressure sensor were already replaced. At no point did they ever mention that the camshaft might be worn. Problems started around 70,000 km and currently at 121,000 km. 2016 car.
