Thanks for a great review. I have a 2015 myself, 1.5 skyactiv 90 hp with the 6-speed automatic transmission. We bought it as a complement to our big Ford minivan. The Mazda 2 is one of the best car I have owned. First, it is super economical in all ways. It has low tax, low fuel consumption (5.4 litres per 100 km), 10-year warranty. Second it is a real pleasure to drive for its size. A lovely engine and automatic that loves to be revved and runs really quick with a wonderful sound. Or, when you just cruise, it is smooth and super quiet. The comfort is great, noice and vibration harshness is definitely OK, it is super easy to drive and everything you touch feels light but solid. I'm not sure why you'd spend $27k on this car. It's not that it's bad... but I don't feel as though it's a value proposition for a car like this. What are you really missing over the cheaper versions? Or a 2 year old one? The infotainment certainly doesn't persuade one to buy a newer Mazda 2 over an older one - it's looking very dated. Interior luxury shouldn't matter that much on a city car therefore you shouldn't pay for it, and if you want to take this on long road trips... you really should get a slightly bigger car with a longer wheelbase and more weight. So, I'm not really sure who this car is for? I agree that the chassis and engine are good for the class though. But it hasn't changed much in 10 years...

I don't understand cars in this segment. If you only have $22k to $27k to spend on a car, why not get a second hand one for much better value? Like are there even any downsides? A 2 year old Mazda 3 would have all the specs this car has, plus more (electronic park brake etc), for the same or cheaper price! If you want low operating costs, the corolla has gone hybrid since 2016, it's capped servicing price is $155 less than Mazda2, and you get $100 rebate on road tax in Victoria. That's a saving of $250 a year plus you get a larger car. If you spend $1000 on fuel a year on a Mazda 2, you would only spend $650 on the corolla. Overall annual saving of $600, use it for 10 years and you save $6000, a quarter of your purchasing price.
