Thanks for a great review. I have a 2015 myself, 1.5 skyactiv 90 hp with the 6-speed automatic transmission. We bought it as a complement to our big Ford minivan. The Mazda 2 is one of the best car I have owned. First, it is super economical in all ways. It has low tax, low fuel consumption (5.4 litres per 100 km), 10-year warranty. Second it is a real pleasure to drive for its size. A lovely engine and automatic that loves to be revved and runs really quick with a wonderful sound. Or, when you just cruise, it is smooth and super quiet. The comfort is great, noice and vibration harshness is definitely OK, it is super easy to drive and everything you touch feels light but solid. That price increase is absolutely worth it. You won't get a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder from the competition at this price point. You also won't get a naturally aspirated engine at from the competitors at all in any price range below 30k. Also the feature set is unmatched for the money. And on a more subjective note, I think this is the most beautiful car in the segment.

I do agree on the issue with the driver's side pillar. It is very distracting and it cuts the view on tight turns. Once or twice driving down a mountain I seriously could not see the car on the opposite direction! I've had a Mazda 2 since 2009 and for me this and the fact that it lacks power are the only real issues with it.

I bought a 2021 model Mazda 2. A good car but the flat external review windows don't give me confidence that I can see as much traffic around me as the convex mirrors on my Getz did. The blind spot makes me nervous sometimes when changing lanes as the design and thickness of the rear quarter panel on the blind side obscures the driver's vision more so than my Getz.

Thanks for your very good review. I hear that in 2022, the Mazda 2 will become something of a Toyota/Mazda Yaris, & one can only hope that the price doesn't become sky high too. Albeit, as of Dec '20, the A$ is currently very high which just might transfer to buys, but i wouldn't bet on that either.

I have been looking at reviews of both the Mazda 2 and Kia Picanto as a city drive for my wife. There are differences in equipment but to find rear drum brakes on the Mazda and rear discs on the Picanto spells cost cutting to me. As you commented on, no centre armrest at that price point again speaks of cheap. So far, I can't make up my mind. 5 year warranty - 7 year warranty. Maybe in future reviews you could comment on servicing costs?

Capped price servicing has only short term benefits. The Mazda price promise of steady service costs is much better if you keep the car long term which most Mazda owners do. And a first service for the “current” Mazda 2 is now under $300 which id say is definitely keeping the consumer in mind

Like you I was disappointed that it didn't come with a centre armrest as that's almost an expectation these days. I have previously owned a 2007 Mazda 2 and it was a fabulous car and it still is as my mum now drives it and it still performs very well. I'm not sure why you'd spend $27k on this car. It's not that it's bad... but I don't feel as though it's a value proposition for a car like this. What are you really missing over the cheaper versions? Or a 2 year old one? The infotainment certainly doesn't persuade one to buy a newer Mazda 2 over an older one - it's looking very dated. Interior luxury shouldn't matter that much on a city car therefore you shouldn't pay for it, and if you want to take this on long road trips... you really should get a slightly bigger car with a longer wheelbase and more weight. So, I'm not really sure who this car is for? I agree that the chassis and engine are good for the class though. But it hasn't changed much in 10 years...

I'd say it's worth it if you're the kind of person who pay a bit more for luxury texture. The platform is obviously old but considering how small Mazda is as a car company, it's fair to me. Moreover because it's old, the engineering must be matured and thus reliable.

For about $5k more, you can get the CX3 top spec that has AWD and 2.0L engine just to highlight some points that value for the upgrade (there is ALOT more than those two on a CX3). I like a small car as I live near the city bt have to travel outside Sydney to visit family and want at least the power, performance and comfort to come with it. I don't understand cars in this segment. If you only have $22k to $27k to spend on a car, why not get a second hand one for much better value? Like are there even any downsides? A 2 year old Mazda 3 would have all the specs this car has, plus more (electronic park brake etc), for the same or cheaper price! If you want low operating costs, the corolla has gone hybrid since 2016, it's capped servicing price is $155 less than Mazda2, and you get $100 rebate on road tax in Victoria. That's a saving of $250 a year plus you get a larger car. If you spend $1000 on fuel a year on a Mazda 2, you would only spend $650 on the corolla. Overall annual saving of $600, use it for 10 years and you save $6000, a quarter of your purchasing price.

when you review a car, don't put a comparison in it. Review a car for what it is.

Way to expensive, I would brought one new if they were still 17k, don't care about the other features, I only would pay for reserve camera and cruise control but I could get that added later

Good looking but terrible value. For 27K a corolla hybrid sedan is much better. Fuel consumption is 35% better, larger boot, more spacious rear seating. I haven't seen another car without a centre console tbh.

Just a shame those lower-spec Corolla sedans look so dowdy! The top-spec ZR sedan, frustratingly petrol only, looks the business.

@@chasingcars scouring a second hand yard for anything in the next class above is better than any of these new age light cars.Chances are it might be a 2013 to 2016 version of a small car or if lucky a 2017 with low mileage for age and you have to add on alarm and the like but you'll get something safe and half decent for way less.I look at all these people who buy this class of car and think in a few years time you'll be lucky to get out for anywhere between 35% and 45% of original prices new.

I have a 69 plate Mazda 2 and its the worst car I have ever owned. the car is too light and bobbles and shakes on the road, car has been checked and it has no faults. Its dangerous to use the screen when driving as all the controls are between the seats. Do yourself a favour and buy something else, especially if you suffer with travel sickness. A total waste of money.

I do love the Mazda product but they really messed this up. Both this and the CX3 are manufactured in Thailand for us so other than Mazda Australia’s greed..... for the age of the car the price never should of been stacked up so much. The GT for the price should of received a centre armrest both for the front and rear.

True, though it's very much a factor of the precipitous fall in the value of the AUD compared to the THB over the last 2-3 years. What was meant to be a cost-saving decision based on the free trade agreement has turned a little sour due to currency depreciation.

Japanese absurdity, the car looks modern and inside it is a 2015 model. It loses to all cars in this segment in terms of equipment. No armrest, no electric handbrake. Adaptive cruise control, lane keeping. These are 4 reasons why I won't buy it.

Worth 12990 driveway. Looks cheap and mazda don't make reliable cars anymore. Add to that refusing warranty claims until you scream blue murder, then make sure your car is poorly treated and returned worse than when you leave it for fixes. I bought my mazda in 2016 and looking forward to updating to a Hyundai or Kia. My first mazda IS my last.

“It probably knows better, let’s be honest” on gear selection..... so this channels viewers are all 80 year old grannies? But then you go on to talk about throttle adjustability on cornering...... FFS sort your reviews out. Also, you prefer electronic handbrakes? Weirdo
