Thank You! Have a Mazda 3 08 manual and got the P0102 error code. Went to the auto store and said the MAV sensor had to be replaced at a cost of $550. Researched, saw this video, bought the MAV cleaner and followed the steps. The steel rods on the sensor was very dirty and probably was not reading at all. After cleaning by following the steps the steel rods was shining again. However, after turning on the car and driving it around the block multiple times, the engine light was still on, so I disconnected the battery for a couple minutes to reset the system as I didn’t have the device to reset it. Turned on the car and voila!, the engine light was off and the engine was literally running smoother and not sounding as heavy between shifting gears. A potentially $550 repair, cost me $20. Thanks once again, much appreciated!!!!

Worked beautifully on my Mazda, I mean scion ia ;). Mine wasn’t even dirty per se, but all of the ash my little ia has probably been breathing in the last 12 months probably made it worse. Went from hiccup-like noises on idle to a smooth purr in 15 minutes

The part you cleaned is the IAT, not the MAF. They are integrated into one part. The MAF is up inside that hole at the tip.

I wonder if acetone would work? Basically you just need a solvent that will remove the grime but not damage the maf sensor. Acetone is pretty good at that. Anyone know?

Sooo. My Mazda 3 2010 is idling rough and when I unplug the sensor it runs fine. Itvwas doing the same thing 8 months ago and I cleaned it like you did and it ran until yesterday then it started doing it again. I cleaned it again bit it hasn't fixed the problem. Do you think I just need a new maf sensor?

You don’t want to touch the small wires/blades inside the MAF housing the oil on your hands could affect the reading.

As the previous post says, just go with the Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner from CRC. Any auto parts store will have it. It's maybe $10 and will last you a very long time. Once you have this, you can periodically clean the sensor at any time. It's very easy to do, yet mechanics will attempt to charge you up to $800 to replace the sensor altogether. Even if it needs to be completely replaced, you usually can find an original mass air flow sensor (OEM part) for $100 or so, instead of paying what a mechanic will charge for an incredibly easy job. It literally takes less than five minutes to do.
