this is why I love youtube. cause there is no way i'm about to pay someone 300 bucks to do this for me. took my mazda in to get the tire pressure sensor replaced. (200 buck btw for one that's broken.) and they then call me with over 1400 dollars worth of repairs needed. one was a transmission flush. i do most things myself especially when i have the tools. thanks for the tutorial. mines a 2012 but looks identical to this one.

I am glad to see more people wanting to learn and be able to fix things their self's. glad you like the video. this wont get all new fluid in after one change. I have been looking at other methods to get a complete flush done. I might attempt it this summer.

Recently did 2 dump and fills on my 2012 mazda 3. Car had 168k kms when I had the first oil change then another at 170k kms. I also had the transmission filter changed and the pan cleaned. The performance of the car has improved greatly and fuel consumption has gone down alot. The car feels like it's sipping fuel right now. Before the first fluid change, the car seemed to struggle with acceleration and power output was low.

Just did mine today. Wanted to drop the oil pan as well, but it was stuck there for good, so I skipped the step. There is usually a lot a gunk in there around the magnet. The 2014 2.5 Skyactive takes 9mm hex key to remove the drain plug. Also FYI the color of the fluid doesn't mean anything. If you want a proof next time send it out for testing. Why not check the fluid level with the dip stick, that's what its for right? I have to do this with my daughter CX 5 and I am worried that the person that did it before didn't do it right or what if some leaked out .. problem is different videos say check it off and some say check it while running... so I am confused a bit.
@TDLDIY
@TDLDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, always check the dip stick. You will have to do this when the fluid is warmed up and engine is running. When i dumped it and measured it, it just gives me a good idea how much i needed to add. but if you do this when the engine is already warm then you will be putting in too much. since the new fluid is cold or room temp. when the fluid is hot it expands. so you will have to keep that in mind. I hope this helps.

That seems much too long. But i do recommend call other Mazda dealers in your area and see what they say as well. Its always better to get multiple recommend and see where the common response lies. If i was to give my though it would be somewhere in the 80 - 120k range in kms. *** I just called my local mazda dealer for you after i typed out my repsonse so i am adding to it. They told me they recommend it to be do at 80k to 100k. If you are keeping the car they would still recommend doing it even at your 120k kms. My dealer said it will be a forced flush and could cost around 350 ish possible cheaper. I hope this helps good luck.

I have a 2016 Mazda CX-3 automatic transmission , approaching 60k I want to drop the pan and change the filter along with putting in new FZ transmission Fluid. Then at 120k do the same thing over. If I do multiple dump and fills after that would I run the risk of damaging the transmission? Maybe transmission slips? Or should I wait to dump and fill at 90k ? Mixing new fluid with old would that be an issue?
@caribougoo349

Imo just give it a dump and fill, wait a couple weeks, then do another. Then give it a single dump and fill every 15-20k. I wouldn't drop the pan until maybe 120-150k or if you start to experience weird shifting behavior. Provided service is done correctly, you're not risking anything working on it more often. It's just extra time and money on your part. Mixing new and old fluid would only be problematic if the transmission already has a foot in the door from lack of service

If it is the round intercooler like on a 2016 Mazda3 that won't work because those rubber hoses are for the coolant from the radiator. The only way to flush would be to remove the round intercooler and use a flushing adapter plate or stick tight fitting vinyl tubing into the ATF inlet and out let holes that are visible once yo remove the intercooler.
@milanzelenovic7396

Actually you might be OK on a 2103 because, depending on the model, it uses a different intercooler and might have 4 hoses on the intercooler, large ones for coolant and small ones for ATF

@@bobloblaw10001 Int total agreement with you. Unless this vehicle has a dipstick that allows you to check the level, and clear instructions on temperature through a scan tool, I will probably allow the dealer to do this. The only issue with drain/fill procedures and this so-called lifetime fluid is the dealer not wanting to do this. Even if you have 1.5 hours of labor and $60 fluid, plus some shop fees and taxes, this should be less than $250. Just bought same car with skyactiv engine with 118,000 miles on it. I'm debating if I should do a drain. There is no scheduled maintenance in the manual for this engine. Then I read that for skyactiv engine, the transmission fluid is lifetime for that engine until there is a major transmission maintenance. What are people's thoughts about this???
@TDLDIY
@TDLDIY 2 жыл бұрын
So first thing i will say there is no such thing as life time oil/fluids. Oils will break down over time with heat cycles this is why oils good from clear,blue,red,golden in colors to darker or even brownish to black. When they say lifetime and you dont change the transmission oil it will be the life of that part in this case the transmission the transmission will run untill the oils is broken down so much the transmission will over time fail hense life time. This is also lifetime because most people dont keep cars longer then 5 years so it will last longer then that and or fail around that amount of time depending of total miles/kms driven how hard you are on the vechile etc. lots of factors. Now on to the should you change the fluid you do have alot of miles on it already. I had about that much in kms and i did a drain and fill. and did it again a bit later and then i am going to be doing it every 30kms... now i know some people will stay 30kms isnt long and the fluid will last long and they are correct but since i did a drain and fill it doesnt replace all the fluid at once only about 40 to 50 percent so changing every 30kms will ensure over time and many drain and fills later i have good fluid. This might 100% answer your question as in should you do it.. best answer for this would ask your dealer and what they recommend. But i will say one last thing New fluid is better then old. The damage might already be done. doing a flush that forces fluid thru the transmission might not be good as why i did a drain and fill. Which ever you decide it will be you choice. I hope this helps in some way. Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment.

I keep hearing that it's better to not drain and fill the transmission fluid if it's never been changed and the car has a lot of miles on it. My car has 115,000 miles. Do you think it's better to go ahead and change it?
@TDLDIY
@TDLDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard the same about changing the transmission fluids but most were done at the dealer with the pressurized system. I think a drain and fill will be ok but its not perfect it only changes out about 50% or so of the fluid. I would recommend contacting your dealer and ask them for there recommendation. 115, 000 mile is roughly 185,000 kms if you havent done it before them you might want to just drain and fill. But give a call to your dealer and see what they say.
@marlins1847

I've seen before that on high mileage changes you should save the old fluid in case it is too late for the new fluid. That way if it slips you can drain the mostly new fluid out and put the old back in.

When you drop the fluid pan for the transmission, almost all the 2013 owners found that silicone was the seal for the pan. It's gonna take at least a day for that thing to dry. Plan ahead if you are going to change the filter.

Hi I got a 2012 SKY that I bought used in 2018 at 62,000km. I don't know the maintenance history of its transmission fluid. Now I'm almost at 100,000km and I should probably change it. Some people think after a certain point if it was never changed you better not change it or you risk breaking it. Do you think my situation has reached that certain point or I should change the oil?
@TDLDIY
@TDLDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hey seems like you got a decent skyactiv there. So how I think about it is if you do a dump and fill your good. some / most place this is what they do now. If you get a transmission flush what happens here is 100% of the transmission fluid is changed unlike the dump and fill but it is also force thru the transmission and there are lot of paths and what not that possible could have some thing in it and it can break free and get stuck in a vavle or place that could cause problem with the transmission. So I think that's where the idea of if you haven't changed it in a long time your better off not touching it. But with a dump and fill I would like to think that new fluid is always better then old broken down fluid that isn't providing you the lubrication and protection it once did. So also with a dump and fill you will have to do it more often. because you only get about half of the fluid out. I hope this helps.

There is a brand called Ravenol which I used for a few hundred miles. My transmission was slipping considerably prior to the drain and fill, and slipped a few times after. My second drain and fill was with oem fluid, and the slipping stopped completely. I don't blame the fluid for not completely resolving the slipping; I severely burned burned the fluid. The Ravenol was slightly cheaper two years ago, but oem is currently the cheapest.

Yes, your correct most dealerships will say that, unfortunately oils break down over time with cycles of hot and cold. Your transmission fluid after a certain point will not longer be protecting the components like it used to. My Mazda dealer will do transmission fluid flushes. Hi Thanks for leaving a comment, I will first off say that lifetime transmission fluid is kinda a lie. Why you might ask well first off transmission fluid is product like engine oil that will over time break down and wont provide your transmission with the lubrication it requires. This is from heat and other factors that will break down over time. Now that being said they might kinda be telling you the truth and that is your transmission fluid will last the life of the transmission meaning that. if you never change it well your transmission will fail sooner then a transmission that has changed its transmission fluid say every 50,000 - 60,000 kms. Just remember one thing new oil or transmission fluid is always better then old dirty broken down fluid. I hope this brings some new light or information that might help you.
