BT50 now come with Isuzu motors, they have the 4jj1, and 4jj3 engines, the 4jj1 motor is a commercial engine which have a B10 rating which means 90% of them reach 500,000kms, my mate was recently complaining his Isuzu fuel pump needed rebuilding, I asked how many kms, he said 540, 000 kms, such a proven motor.

In defence of the 5 cylinder engine, mine is a 2012 BT50 with 240,000 Kms and has done some hard offroad and long distance travel and has never missed a beat (so far)! Oil change and fuel filter every 10,000 KMs and prefilter clean has made it pretty reliable.

I'm mechanic for over 40 years I just did a service on one of these, winding out sump plug it was tight all the way , draining the oil I was inspecting sump pan thread damaged thru overtightening previously (Lady in the Army so vehicle had been serviced many places) plug thread damaged also . I wouldn't have time to repair the thread or order another sump plug did the stupid engine design team never think of such a scenario !! I gingerly reinstalled damaged plug being very careful not to strip it completely (Heart in the mouth stuff I don't need )filled oil then Informed customer of what I found (to be fair she took the bad news very well) and that probably best to get it done at a Mazda Dealership as if it has to be helicoiled and it goes over the 10-15 min window they would be well prepared to do the manual reprime of the oil pump on the next oil change. Bloody ridiculous. I mean oil changes on these motors is stressful enough without this happening !

Jefferson Ford in Mentone Victoria supply new series 1 Ranger 3.2 5 cylinder long motors for $8,400, if you buy new, or recondition make sure you have a constant flow oil pump fitted to replace the less reliable variable flow pump that requires fast oil changes. The extra oil pressure will be an advantage, the miserable economy gained by the variable pump pales with failure of pump or the inability to pickup oil if service interval is too long, or you hole the sump in remote location and repair hole, pump will not pickup without majorly flooding engine with oil, then draining off excess when started. Constant flow pumps were fitted to some commercial 5 cylinder variations in Europe, this conventional geared type are considered far longer lived and more reliable. Definitely replace the EGR cooler, however personally I would be bypassing the water flow from top heater firewall outlet from the cooler and reconnecting to pipe connector (2 possibilities) after the EGR can prevent future hydrolocking if EGR fails and fills exhaust manifold as has happened. If pre 2015.5 a simple EGR cable installed at air cleaner area will deactivate EGR exhaust gas operation, Replace all injectors with quality new injectors, keep good originals for spares, (have tested) Replace turbo and actuator with new, some higher quality aftermarket billet turbos with better billet vanes, and can increase boost by 20% safely, remap engine computer to take advantage of increased torque. The cost less than OEM much of the time and come complete with brand new actuator, stage 1 units around $900.00. If pre Cat vehicle replace exhaust down pipe with aftermarket free flow 3 inch unit and 3 inch exhaust. Replace original plastic ended intercooler with better quality larger alloy body unit, will cool much better. Definitely if auto replace appalling OEM small water cooled transmission close coupled cooler with Wholesale Automatics front mount twin cooler unit for heavy towing. These mods will make the 3.2 5 cylinder engine far more reliable and pull more power safely. This engine is understressed and can develop considerably more power than the standard admittedly slightly more powerful bi turbo 2 liter( however most tuners feel its pretty well on its limits for reliability) wheras the 3.2 can pull better numbers with sensible upgrades to around 215 KW and well over 600 nm. I've done these modifications to my 2015 PX 1 early in its life. and it has definitely more torque and has proved very reliable at 160 k and we pull a 2800kg caravan. Alternatively IMO the most reliable conventional std engines are the Mitsibishi and the later Maxda BT 50 or Isuzu D' Max with the 3 liter Isuzu diesel, the Mitsi while reliable isn't as poweful as the Ranger or Mazda /Isuzu though. The Isuzu engine is also capable of large power and torque increase with simple remap and has very good torque spread standard, we also own a 2021 Mazda BT 50 with this engine, it is often underatted in reviews for it sustained pulling power IMO. Jus sayin'

Your channel has generated great information in regards to insurance and reading the details or getting further information. In regards to the engine I would have liked to have looked at it myself to give you an expert opinion but obviously that is not possible due to distance. Don’t be afraid to ask for pictures of damage or to be shown the actual damage. I personally have a different perspective on repairs as what can look like a blown engine is not always the case. Moving forward try to recover what money you can from insurance with new info subscribers have provided and even contact a lawyer to be informed of entitlements under law you may not have been aware of in relation to insurance. I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you on the road once again. 🙌

Fix one or two of these a month. They only blow up due to: 1. Incompetent mechanics not identifying that the fuel injectors require replacement. 2. A failing EGR valve and or cooler not being identified prior to failure. And most commonly. 3. Idiots running these things well above GCM / GVM.

The busted piston will be from injector failure which is common on all common rail engines, All brands do it ! It's up to you to have injectors checked periodically ! The injector fails by firing a pin like of diesel at over 30,000 psi which bores a hole through the piston ,hence the damage ,a normal injector will mist the bore all of this is caused by dirty fuel /faulty injector

Direct injection is always risky I guess. Can a diesel be port injected ? I don't know.
@JohnSmith-yv6eq
@JohnSmith-yv6eq 6 ай бұрын
True diesels rely on the carefully timed injection of fuel. If the fuel just came in when the intake opened then the correct ratio for ignition might or might not be present... and it could pre ignite.. or not ignite at all. Direct injection by coomon rail is the latest iteration of getting diesl into the cyclinder. Before that it was mecanical/electronic control single low ressure injectors. before that indirect injection where the spray of low pressure 2800lbs sq inch was first squirted into a chamber in the head, then it spread out into the cylinder. Common rail diesel is more refined but as we see can erode a piston top with 30k lbs sq inch direct jet when the injector tip clogs and the spray no longer sprays...... @@tonymontana897

As my censored earlier reply said..no. The diesel has to be injected at the right time into the compressed air as the piston comes up to TDC on the compression stroke... if the diesel was swept into the cylinder along with the air the diesel fuel would/could ignite early.... @@tonymontana897

I see this time after time with vehicles towing close to their capacity. Australia is tough on cars and towing big vans close to the load limit is a recipe for disaster. People talk about the 80% rule. meaning not to tow over 80% of the max off your vehicle for longevity and safety buffer with braking etc.

As most people know by now the 3.2 5 cyclinder motor has a special requirement when a oil change is done, it has to be completed with in 10 minutes, filter and oil because the oil pump does not self prime itself, not a good design I think this motor is similar to the Volvo design, Toyota had similar issues with there 3. Litre diesel cracking pistons, what stood out to me was the gudgen pin to close to crown of piston. Toyota 2.8 diesel is a gem

@@OakesyAdventures They told me out of pocket expenses like towing are deducted from the $7000 cover. How he explained it to me is that the contractor gets a certain amount for towing a van up 300k and to a length of 5.5 meters and for larger vans they add more cost being a bigger van. This part we claim back and the policy would be useless otherwise because most vans are bigger and if they measured ours from the hitch to the rear ours is 9 meters. 3.5 ton is their limit though. He told me you submit your invoice to RAC claims and they refund you.

In no way im being offensive tbh i viewed the breakdown video and mate to me you looked very heavy i think looking at it you pretty much have every bell and whistles in mods and gear...if you have had to mod the BT50 to get it to do what you want it to do its not the right car...keeping the vehicle in its standard form is how they operate best no matter the mods....looking at that van you want something that is pretty much set up for the task straight out of the box....that way you can feel a little more comfortable that you are within limits of the vehicles design...that means longevity...I would also like to add as a truck driver so know a bit with towing....all manufacturers blow out there ass with towing capacity....its a fact that if the van is heavier then the vehicle towing its a recipe for disaster and a sure way of having an accident one day its science no matter the mods....you need a big vehicle for that van one for safety two for health of the engine of the towing vehicle.

Haha no It’s the injectors get blocked and instead of shooting a mist they shoot a direct stream of diesel into the cylinder, over many rotations it slowly bores a hole in the piston and eventually everything goes pop.
@ScatManAust
@ScatManAust 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I know that was the case with your engine, but all these CR engines can and do suffer bad injectors. CR Injectors are now a maintenance consumable and as such have to be serviced on a relatively regular schedule to make sure to catch a bad injector before it can do major damage. And also, to keep the engine running and conforming to emissions regulations . In saying there is no substitute for capacity still stands. Manufacturing larger capacity engines drastically eases load on major engine components while making more Hp and torque without the extreme pressures on pistons and fuel systems as in the smaller capacity engines working within an inch of its life all the time. Sure, cylinder and fuel pressures can still be in the same range on the larger engines, but these extremes are not present all the time especially towing at HI way speeds in hot weather. Will be interesting to see how the four banger L/C goes long term when everyone loads them up to the hilt and hits the hot roads. Its easy to get high power and torque out of these small engines since the advent of CR and forced ID, it's much harder to keep all that energy contained long term. @@lengerer

The problem with your 5 cylinder engine could be injector failure. I have a cousin in SA with a Ford Ranger where injector number 5 failed resulting in the engine failure. He has since had 2 additional engines installed because Ford only replaced the faulty injector on the new engine, and consequently the other 4 which weren’t replaced failed. The best advice in that situation, is exactly what you wanted to do anyway, GET IT HOME. Unless you actually KNOW a mechanic/workshop within the range, just get it HOME. It will hurt less than getting bent over by a dodgy workshop with no other options. And at all costs, do not ever let it enter an RAC workshop, absolute thieves :( The roadside assist/towing is where their value ends. I fell for the RAC workshop scam once, home was outside of my covered towing range, and so was every workshop i trusted, but they offered to tow it nearly 30k's further than my range IF it went to THEIR workshop... I should have known what I was in for :D They tried to upsell me everything, even offered me a 1500 dollar tune because it wouldn't idle... they had turned the base idle screw all the way out so it couldn't idle. I still wonder to this day how fucked they would have been if i was injured or killed driving it home from the workshop after declining their tune, it was an automatic, and stalled every time you took your foot off the pedal, all because they wanted 1500 bucks to turn the screw back to where it was... i'm sorry i mean "tune" the vehicle. The funniest part is, at that time, there was NO way for anyone other than Ford to "tune" those vehicles anyway. Modified ECU's and "piggyback" support didn't come until later. Some scummy "mechanics" will literally piss in your pocket and tell you it's raining :( all with a smile on their face.
