Mazda is taking a big leap into untestested territory with the new CX-60. It aims to try its hand as a premium manufacturer competing with the likes of the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and even the Range Rover Evoque.
The CX-60 has all the makings of a great car with rear-wheel-drive architecture and a luxury interior, but has Mazda South Africa brought the right version to our market? We tested the CX-60 Dynamic model to see what it's like to drive, how practical it is and whether there is enough spec to make it appealing to a premium customer.

The mild hybrid inline-six diesel CX-60 we get in Europe produces 184kW and 550Nm of torque. It can achieve a fuel economy of 5.3 litres per 100km.

@@jasonbrown1263 Totally agree. VW managed to make a great first Gen Amarok all on their own. Why did they need Ford for their new one? It makes no sense. I went to check out the new Amarok. The doors open with such a cheap feel like a Ford and interior build and material quality isn't as good as a normal VW product. It feels very Ford and that's not a good thing. Mazda made a big mistake to not offer the i6 engines here though.

I have the KF 2.2D Akera. I easily get around 5L/100km with the diesel. Hybridsare just heavy and take away the fun i driving. That said that 2.5 petrol engine is gutless. Horrible engine. Avoid at all costs

@@farainyika2365 We don’t have the 2.5 petrol in the CX-60 in Europe. But I think it is offered in the CX-5. Plus, the 3.3 diesel is a mild hybrid, where you have a bit of electric support.

After the partnership with Ford, Mazda has just become a much better product which makes you wonder what took them so long? Mazda has one of the best interior build quality which feels better than other more expensive premium segment vehicles. Mazda needs to bring the diesel engine to SA and it will sell just as well as the Mazda CX-5, we South Africans love our diesels.

The August edition of Car Magazine carries an interview with Craig Roberts, MD of Mazda SA. In that he refers to the CX-60 getting the 3,3 l turbo diesel “it’s now just a case of waiting our turn for allocation” More interesting though is the yet to be released CX-80 is “likely to join the local portfolio in the first quarter of 2024”. Guess it will be above the R1 million mark though. My Wife has the CX-5 2,2 diesel Akera. More than enough shove from that engine with 140 kW and 450 Nm. Should have used that motor in the CX-60. Same power but more torque than what the 2 litre diesel BMW X3 and Audi Q5 have. Build quality superb with zero problems in over 2 years of ownership. Lastly Mazda SA needs to look at a maintenance plan in its top products or at least offer as an option.

It's weird but I don't think the engine is such a bad trade-off for that price, and that warranty + service plan are worth tens of thousands in value! I would happily buy that kind of peace of mind. I'm not sold on its looks but that interior is classy👌🏾

I drive a Mazda 2 2015 model and the handling is quite nifty, have found myself in unfavorable unforeseen situations and it handled amazingly that It made me look like a pro driver… still smiling as type this out. 2018 I got into the BMW x2 and that being a BMW I pushed it seeking out that exhilarating experience since my M2( Mazda2😂) could tackle that curve with ease every time I’m running late going to work. Was I not disappointed as the x2 under steered at lesser speeds so bad that the product specialist told me that it does not have the X drive which would enhance the handling 🤦🏽‍♂️😒. Jumping into the CX-5, it handles like a smaller car than it is. The point I’m trying to make is, until the German car lovers jump into a Mazda, no matter how brand loyal or status driven they might be, they will acknowledge Mazda’s engineering even if they wouldn’t do it openly so. It’s truly a let down that we don’t get much options in as far as interior and engine specs are concerned which truly limits the amount of customers MAZDA has and can easily win over from other brands offering a bit more variety. I’m sure I’m not the only one that would love a Mazda Speed 2/3 to rival the Ford fiesta and Focus, the GTi and try the club sport 😂🤷🏽‍♂️ and with the CX-5 and now 60 to rival the X3M and X5… reading it I know it sounds too ambitious but Mazda has the experience and technology. What’s holding them back, only they can tell. If they are worried about the price range, Haval went looney and they presented their H6 GT at the current price range which we all feel is premature however you bump into quite a lot on the streets, so, it’s being bought despite the price range. Mazda is a much prominent brand and will do just fine. They should stop limiting our pockets as South Africa is a country known to spend on more expensive brands with high price tags. The higher the price the better (which I don’t understand 😅but would do as well 😂).

As a happy Mazda CX-5 owner I’m not liking the front lights which looks a bit retro to me. The rear looks good but in a generic kind of a way, while interior looks and quality as well as driving experience are typical Mazda strong points. However, like another commenter said, I would also go for the Haval H6 GT whose looks and presence set it apart nicely from the others. This car deserves a more eye-catching paint colour and engine. The 2.5 litre turbo sounds like the one sold as standard with CX-5s sold in overseas markets, whereas here in SA we have to make do with the weak 2.0 litre NA engine. On the other hand, the fuel economy out of the 2.0 litre NA engine is excellent - Mazda engines are really efficiently engineered as my personal experience shows.

Personally I’d wait for the i6 petrol if they would even offer that in SA. I’m disappointed in the spec that we get in SA. We don’t get the higher trim models that are offered in EU nor the engines. I’d kinda forgive Mazda SA for that coz the price would be at the million rand mark, and I don’t think SA consumers are ready to take a Mazda over a BMW or Audi

I bought one CX-60 PHEV Humora in Sweden September 2022 with all xtra you can get! It’s been at the workshop 10 times under a year………….. I had to fight with reseller for them to take it back! And they refused, too many cars in the courtyard…..and too many incoming cars!!! I couldn’t trust the car any more and back and forth to workshop! All the joy disappeared for the car! After I involved Mazda Sweden they finally agreed to buy it back and of course a big loss of money for me. But the problem is gone! Once a Mazda never again!! So maybe I got a “Monday Copy” but it’s up to you!

Having driven the CX-5 for 5 years which comes with rotary dial and touch, you wont believe me how intuitive the rotary dial is. I never used my touch screen, perhaps only to show features to visitors. So don't see it as a downside. Rotary is intuitive and comes naturally instead of leaning over to touch a screen while driving.

To put this into perspective with a proven japanese luxury car slightly bigger than this, you can get a certified pre owned Lexus RX350 still in warranty and most are fitted with a 7 year motorplan for this price, where'll you get way more features like nappa leather ventilated seats, 10 airbags, and a way punchier 220kw V6 engine, which will only get slightly worse fuel economy as it doesn't have to work as hard as this big mazda being lugged around by a NA 4 cylinder.

I'm sure the only reason why we not getting the nice powered motors is pricing. It would push towards 1million mark, and its still has to be affordable being a Mazda. Ok, so we just got our CX-60 Dynamic for 2 weeks now and my driving experience is somewhat different. This car is much much heavier than our previous CX5 and can be felt on the brake pedal, it could do with upgraded Brakes considering the weight of the car. Also, the car feels very floaty and wallowy over uneven surfaces and on bends, and it is rather stiff on the bumps. Almost feels like a car riding on lowered springs except you not but wheels are larger @ 235/50/20 so the lower profile tyre isn't helping the ride comfort much. Going over bumps it seems to bounce like the shock is worn or there is an issue with shock/spring combo used on theses cars, there is not enough dampening. One would think that the drive would be more comfortable over the CX5, and it is not. I hope there will be a recall soon for better shocks. Other than the ride, the car is lovely. Fuel consumption for me so far is 11L/100km so its heavier than the claimed 7.7.

While this may be good, good isn't good enough and I think Mazda slightly missed the boat. A few things: 1) Premium is also all about choice. The screen should be both touch and have the controller like in the X3 or previous Gen GLC. And if touch only, then the screen should be larger and designed for touch use in the UI to start with like the new GLC. 2) they say no touch screen is for safety reasons and I 100% agree. However, why didn't they do what they did with the Mazda 3 and make the touch function only available when the vehicle is stationary. Also, if they're so worried about safety, then all safety features should be standard even on the base model 3) this engine is unacceptable and plays more in the Rav4, CX5 segment. Not the GLC, X3, Q5 segment. 4) They should pay more attention to some details like the feel of the door handles when you open the door and the door closing sound (this was a criticism from the Autogefühl channel). 5) the infotainment system and software looks dated already. It can't match the level of the X3 and GLC. Even Chery and Haval infotainment systems seem better.
@zeed5764
@zeed5764 10 ай бұрын
I agree. It's definitely not competition for the X3 or GLC. Compared to the Sportage or even the Tucson, it lacks in the appeal department. In 3 years, those cars will still look modern whereas the Mazda looks like it already is from a previous generation. I wonder how the seat proportions are on this one.. I found the CX 3 and CX 5 to have rather small seats for the size of the car. Some of the things the Japanese do a little weirdly. The interior is just OK. Also previous generation vibes.

Good car but not worth the money, engine is under powered and not enough to justify the R749k asked for the base model they should at least add safety features AEB, LKA, LCA and rear and front cross traffic alert. The Haval H6 Luxury 2WD at R516k gives you that and has more or less similar power.

Mazda wants a premium brand. Then they should create a new sub company like the three big Japanese Automaker. Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc. Mazda needs to take the CX 70 to Europe and bring the CX 60 to North America. Otherwise keep improving on the CX 5 and make it even more like the Advanced MDX Acura for less money and more value and more premium.

Seems more like a facelift of the CX5 in my opinion. Is it worth the money it comes in, I think it lacks the punch. I rather buy a used X3/Q5 with that amount of money.

How can you have such a heavy car or in such a segment with a mere 4 cylinder?! Infotainment on dashboard is so outdated, very disappointed. Mazda is also struggling design, all models of their brand are identical just differ in size

Mazda is going to watch these things wither away on dealer lots. no one in their right mind is going to buy such an underpowered car for R850 thousand. do they think they're bmw?

Test drove and sat in the cx-60. A little disappointed. The center console feels and Looks cheap. Definitely not going to last te term. Backseats are uncomfortable and small seating area. Massive price on top level. So as a CX5 owner looking up at this model I was massively disappointed.

Anybody who buys any Mercedes or Range Rover (which is Indian not British) needs their head read, Mazda's price point unfortunately is outrageous and typically they introduce the wrong vehicle into this segment. Their BT-50 should be selling hand over fist, as it does in Australia, yet it doesn't muster more than 10 per month versus the overrated, under specced, odd styling Hilux @ 3000 + per month.Mazda continues to shoot itself in the foot by sending in the troops to fight the specialists, it should have had the best engine, the best interior and then it would knock the socks off the other contenders. Mazda is a premium vehicle and should be a top seller sadly it isn't.

It is the same engine as the cx 5 in a much bigger car. I have the cx 5 and it not being turbo charged is frustrating. The way it changes down to 4th on any incline does not make for the most relaxed drive.

Tesla as comparison for premium is a terrible analogy they are not even present in this country and aparantly not very good build quality the panel gaps for eg. Mazda is much more legit

The analogy was about taking a premium brand mass market is much easier than taking a mass market brand and turning it premium. Nothing about build quality, it was also an Elon Musk 'Ouma Rusk' quote.
