Review of the Mazda Miata MX-5 2023 Homura edition.
The shear sensation of feeling every bit of road thorugh the steering wheel and to have a little over 1100 kg, 50/50 weight distributed on a small chassi. Well, that is the MX-5´s standard recipe and has been so since 1989. Top selling two seater roadster that still to this day makes you smile endlessly.
But what is its downsides?

I've owned sporty Camaros, Firebirds, Mustangs, a Fiero, and other "Sporty cars." However, I didn't know what driving a real sports roadster felt like until I bought my 2022 Mazda MX-5, RF GT track-ready Miata, and broke it in. I still have my Mustang Mach 1, and a KIA Sportage SX Turbo, but when I want to feel the excitement of the road with wind in my hair, my Miata is the only way to enjoy a sports car thrill. Miata is all that anyone can wish for in a true sports car.

It’s literally the ‚perfect‘ sports car (talking about the roadster of course!)…if perfect exists anyway. It’s huge fun to drive - and doesn’t need excessive power for it. And I‘m saying this as a former Porsche salesman. The running costs are more than decent and you will hardly find a car you feel more connected with - regardless of price! 10/10

All German brands are sport luxury. They're not pure sport. The other category are supercars/hypercars, so not the same. The term sports car doesn't have to mean a fast car. Sportiness is in the driving dynamics and how it feels.

To make the ND mx-5 perfect you just have to replace the coilovers to reduce body roll. And if you want it to steer flat then you have to replace the sway bars for stiffer ones. And last step is to install a limited slip differential and you got the true sports car for mountain / winding roads.

Well, since my last comment or praise, better put, of your 2023 MX-5 review, I purchased my 4th MX-5, a 2023 MX-5 GT. I immediately installed a Goodwin Roastersport Race muffler. Man, this is what it's about. It's actually a straight pipe with a Helmholtz chamber connected perpendicularly to the straight pipe. I now have quicker throttle response, which really enhances the rev-matching perfectly. They say it also increases horsepower by 8~10 hp also. I know I can feel the difference whether it does or not. Just thought I'd drop you a line letting you know someone is watching your reviews out here. Ciao

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW IF SHOPPING FOR A CURRENT GENERATION MX-5 IN NORTH AMERICA I am in my third year of ownership of the current generation MX-5, an ND2 with uprated engine, the same specification as the car reviewed here, except that the base Sport has a few less brand-name features like Brembo brakes and BBS wheels. This is my fourth MX-5. I know the car’s positives and negatives from on-the-road experience over hundreds of thousands of miles. I have autocrossed and tracked my previous MX-5s, and had an earlier NA turbocharged and equipped with a race suspension. Neither turned out to be a good idea! The wheelbase is too short for a big turbo. The engine will bog as you enter a corner, and then as you accelerate out of the apex, the turbo kicking in can bring on snap oversteer, and that short wheelbase means a lot of drivers are not going to catch it before it spins. Now imagine this happening in 5th gear at 80 miles an hour. After fitting the turbo with a premium Flyin’ Miata Stage 3, I stopped trusting the car - especially in high-speed corners. And as for the track-ready suspension, along with wider wheels and low-profile premium sport tires, prepare to get pretty thoroughly beaten up at moderate speeds on America’s trashed public roads. Hit a bump in a hard corner and the whole car jumps sideways, due to limited travel and aggressive damping. I ended up selling my turbo Miata to a wealthy Silicon Valley guy whose Turbo Esprit was not fast enough. My current ND2 is stock except for a set of Cravenspeed door bushings, which claim to reduce the car’s chassis rigidity. Honestly, they might do that but I can’t tell the difference. My only cosmetic changes are factory alloy pedals ($210) and a clear acrylic wind deflector also from Cravenspeed ($100), to replace the cheesy perforated plastic one that came with the car. The points below are my responses to the reviewer’s comments as the review goes on. He is correct about the big things, but the little ones are important, too. Our reviewer articulates the charms of the Miata very well. No car is more engaging to drive. And the ND2 generation is not slow car, as we see from the driving clips. Some points related to the narration: - By American specifications the MX-5 will reach 60 mph in well under 6 seconds, and I can verify it tops out at over 130 mph. It gets to its top speed faster than my 1970 Jaguar XK-E, but the Jag had about 10 more mph after that. Still, for a normally aspirated four-banger, this lightweight car’s performance is impressive. Never do I think my ND2 is too slow. - For sporty driving in my stock ND2, going at 7/10ths velocity as the reviewer does here is the sweet spot. Push the car too hard and excessive body roll and understeer take over. People confuse classic sports car performance with today’s overweight and claustrophobic high-speed coupes. Traditionally, sports cars are most highly praised for their handling in corners, and their engagement with the driver throughout the driving process. Acceleration was never a priority, because these cars originated in post-war Britain where gas was expensive and so were “gentlemen’s” sports cars like Aston Martins. The driver of a feisty Triumph TR4 would have an Aston on his tail on the straight, but as a corner approached the Triumph driver did not have to slow down while the far heavier Aston did. That is sports car performance, and if you own one of these and have a Hellcat on your tail, you can spoil his driver’s day in the same manner. If you want better handling, you can get it by purchasing an aftermarket coil-over suspension kit. Depending on the kit you buy, the car will lose ride compliance either a little or a lot. I drove a friend’s ND2 fitted with a premium Ohlins-equipped coil-over setup, and it was brilliant in corners, turning in much faster than stock, and with seemingly unending lateral grip. But my friend does track days all the time, and I would not normally drive my MX-5 that fast on public roads because, well, they’re public and you never know what people are going to do. And these days, American cops are quite aggressive with speeders. The nice thing about an MX-5 is its fully adjustable, all-alloy suspension, unique in this price range. The fundamentals are there for a much faster variant of the car. You can make it so through the huge aftermarket. Just for some perspective, bear in mind that very few cars can hang with a well-driven MX-5 on a twisty and undulating road, the MX-5 going at 7/10ths - not even breathing hard. - The “fuselage” cockpit, rounded like an airplane’s, is intended to make the driver at one with the car, all controls at hand, and delivering great “seat of the pants” road feel. - At over 6 feet tall (my guess), the reviewer is at the upper limit of what the Miata can accommodate. Overly tall drivers will find themselves having to peek under the windshield surround. (Seat-lowering kits are available.) I’m 5’10” and 170 lb. and my 2019 Sport fits me like a glove. - The thinner steering wheel is a welcome return to tradition, providing more nuanced maneuvering and better road feel than typical heavily padded “donut” steering wheels. - While lack of rev matching does not hinder shifting, to be extra smooth when decelerating it’s best to heel-and-toe as you downshift. This technique identifies you as an expert driver and in this car it’s easy to do. Get the factory alloy pedals ($210) for maximum heel-and-toe enjoyment. - I think he says “It is not a cheap car to run . . .” But it is! A couple of years ago Consumer Reports rated the MX-5 as having the lowest operating costs of any car sold in the USA. And it’s a sports car! - Yes, the car vibrates at speed, but it is high frequency and more a minor discomfort than major impediment. - The noise at highway speeds can be managed using in-the-ear wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation. They filter out steady droning noises like wind, engine and tires, but let through transient sounds like cars around you and distant sirens. I wear mine only when freeway driving. - The only “nanny” type feature on my base MX-5 is traction control. That can be turned off with the push of a button and should be if you are sport driving, because the TC cuts in too early during spirited cornering. Just be aware that without TC the back end will be looser. - My base Sport model comes with 16” wheels, preferred by the Spec Miata racers because they are lighter. It has an open differential, and friends tell me the Club’s locking diff makes for better handling at the limit. - The Brembo brakes are little, if any, better than stock. For track driving you need an aftermarket caliper set, special pads, and stainless steel hydraulic lines. But if you do not track, the stock brakes are fine. - The Skyactiv engine’s very high compression ratio (13:1) delivers excellent performance, super high revs (7500 redline, 7200 hp peak power), and extraordinary fuel economy, in the 30s mpg zone while sport driving and the high 30s on the highway. For long freeway drones the engine is happy with mid-grade fuel; it loses a few horsepower but there’s never an issue with detonation. - The manual transmission is a true 6-speed, meaning it has no overdrive ratios. This enables the skilled driver to find just the right revs no matter what the corner. You shift often, but because it is the best shifting car on the planet, you won’t mind. - This is the last traditional sports car in production. It is based on British sports cars from the 1960s. He refers to “this little car” but the MX-5 is the standard size for that era. It is because all other car types got huge that the MX-5 feels small. But by sports car standards it is ideal. With the top down the car disappears beneath you and you are immersed in the environment you are driving through. - Avoid the RF. It adds weight and complexity, it is expensive, and the buffeting at highway speeds is unacceptable when down. When up, this targa top is only 2dB quieter than the canvas top. And finally, its rear arches impair visibility of cars in your blind spots, and it never achieves that open-air feeling like the canvas-topped roadster. - I never use the nav or radio, preferring instead to go through my windshield-mounted iPhone using Bluetooth-connected earbuds. Whether listening to music, podcasts, or Google Maps’ spoken directions, because they are inside your ears, only moderate volume is required - and you can still hear what is going on around you. And finally, these earbuds are great for taking phone calls. You and the other party hear each other perfectly, even with the top down. - The HVAC knobs are perfect, don’t know what the guy is talking about. The handbrake leans toward the passenger side because most MX-5s are right hand drive. Duh! - The small storage container between the seats is supplemented by two larger storage bins, one behind each seat. That’s where to put your valuables - thieves will have no idea. - I keep one cup holder, mounted on the passenger side. - If you get wind blast due to gusty weather and are driving solo with top down, put up the passenger side window only and it is significantly reduced, but still giving you that open air feeling. [For the second part of this article, please open my reply.]

Here is Part 2 of everything you need to know when shopping for a current generation MX-5 - 12:58 - That perforated plastic wind deflector is cheesy. Replace it with an aftermarket clear acrylic wind deflector, around $100. - “You can’t thrash it on the motorways because it’s not that fast.” Wrong. My stock MX-5 easily breaks 130 mph and will cruise at 100 mph all day without stressing the engine. - If you want a sportier sound get an aftermarket pipe. Just make sure it does not drone loudly when cruising. And finally, buy the base Sport model. It is a fantastic bargain and leaves out nothing essential. Here in the USA Mazda has a great low-interest finance plan. Not sure about other countries, but be sure to check with your dealership about financing before you go to a bank. The Sport is as fast as as Club, which is mostly a brand-name marketing exercise. With the thousands you save buying a Sport you can customize your MX-5 for looks and performance via the huge aftermarket. Join a local Miata/MX-5 club: make friends and find out how to spec out your car to make your MX-5 uniquely yours. An MX-5 is a throwback to the time when driving was a skill that took years to master. My boomer generation was the last to learn how to shift stick. My Dad was a motorhead too, and I learned how to drive stick in a 1966 Alfa Romeo Duetto 1600 Spider. Was I a lucky teen or what? With cars my luck has held strong through the years. For all us remaining boomer-era motorheads, the MX-5 is a gift from heaven because it has to be DRIVEN every minute. Today’s performance cars pretty much drive themselves - the driver just steers, brakes, and turns - how boring. If you love the experience of driving a responsive manual-transmission two seater, the MX-5 will spoil you for anything else at any price. It has no rival by my standards.

This is a very good reply. I’ve owned a Miata for a year now after test driving one on a whim and knowing I had to have it. Now the wife and I need to get a second car and since we don’t have kid and live on twisty roads, incredibly find ourselves considering another Miata. We have budget for more than twice the cost, but we have yet to find anything that drives as well. It’s a really special car; the more I try other things the more true I realize that to be. I’m lucky, first sportier car I ever drove is the best south of quite a lot of cash. So of course now I wonder about mods and other cars, hard to be patient. I still haven’t mastered it stock! My wife wants to get an M2. I tell her we probably won’t like it as much.

FOR SURE, I am the odd man out. I would never go with the soft top, but hard top ONLY. If you stop and think about it--you too can come up with the reasons why the hard top is arguably WAY better. Safety and security, wear and tear to the soft top, sound abatement inside the cabin, for conversation and music. One last thing, most driving is not on a mountain road with nice scents in the air, gasoline fumes--and loud, obnoxious sounds will not "turn you on". And, last, IMO, the hard top looks fantastic
@whatcarwhattime
@whatcarwhattime Жыл бұрын
Hard top looks a bit more elegant. But I always think that a cabriolet should nr as light as possible and that extra sound proofing in this car is irrelevant. It is not a quiet and sophisticated car. So let there be lightness, a simple manual retractable softop and no wind deflectors. You buy a cabriolet to use it as a cabriolet 🥰. Thanks for watching and your input. Much appreciated 🙏
@jimquantic
@jimquantic Жыл бұрын
As is your input appreciated. But again, just for me, no, it is NOT why I buy THIS cabriolet--I love the Miata and prefer best the option (that they don't have) of a factory, integral hardtop. For soooo many reasons. But the retractable hard top--which I would seldom "retract" if ever, is the reason why I would buy THIS one. But I don't say "I am right", only that I would prefer this as a car which will not be used--probably ever--as a cabriolet. Obviously, I am in the minority of course. I prefer conversation and the sound system--and the security and safety of a hard top. I am probably wrong that that, as a concept, would sell if made. @@whatcarwhattime

It may be that the Miata is really an impractical car. Many drivers don’t have the luxury of owning one car for the daily grind and a separate car for fun. I own a Corvette (my third) and it is used only when I want to drive it, not when I have no other car to drive. But I am retired and don’t have to worry about putting my kids through college. My second Corvette was a C-5 with a 6 speed manual and it was a great car, but I thought I needed more HP. Enter my C-6 with 436 HP and a paddle shift auto. OK but not the same. Now in my 70’s, the HP thing is not as important. Seriously looking at a late model RF manual to do the roadster trip before I get too old!

@@druegillis1744the Miata is firmly in the “toy” category of cars, even among other sports cars. But I think it can be a practical depending on needs. As a single individual, I find my ‘99 NB as practical as it needs to be. Quite a bit of space for groceries, a seat for a passenger, and that’s really all I need. In addition to how dependable, easy to park, and inexpensive it is to operate. I love that it’s no more and no less.

Well, that depends entirely what you compare it to. Its fast enough to make it feel fast for the format it is and on the right roads it's a super delight. But I can agree on some points, when you push it a bit over the edge it starts to slide and the lateral grip isn't really there. So you need to know where the spot is. Maybe a bit of calibration, changing tyres would solve that a little. Thanks for you inputs and for watching 🙏🌞

Yes, driven a lot of these. Last time the Cayman GT4 RS. You can watch that review here on our channel. Different car, mid engined and more grown up overall as a sportscar, more technically advanced. The MX-5 smaller, simple, light and very natural. Me personally would go for a Cayman, it rewards a lot more when driving hard on track but is also a lot more extensive. But if I would only drive on public roads then you can have a little more fun in the MX-5. Thanks for watching 🙏

I really like them both. They are the type of cars that brings back the basic nature of driving, and I just love that. The MX5 is a bit more playful and not quiet as serious as the GR86 is. But the GR86 is a bit more practical, you can put two people in the back, or just fold the track back seats to create extra loading capacity and it feels a bit more focused. But at the same time, I'm a sucker for roadsters/cabriolets, and the GR86 doesn't provide you with one. So it's a tough call. As a summer car, the MX-5, for a all year-rounder the GR86.
