Zero deaths by 2040 sounds like marketing speak to gain some positive attention, but Ms Morrison was well informed and this was an interesting discussion. There will always be people that don’t wear their belts or won’t ignore their phone while driving.

Mazda will definitely have zero fatalities in their cars by 2040! Because Mazda will likely not be around anymore by then.

Mazda may not be around till 2040.. so that's the safety they need

Those 40,000 fatalities are even more tragic when you realize these people were snatched from loved ones with no warning and no chance to say goodbye. Vehicle fatalities usually involve people in the prime of their lives, going about the business of going to work and school. I'm glad Mazda is concerned. There's no worse scenario that can happen with a car.
@joebachmeier67475 ай бұрын
How dramatic. This happens every hour and it's a general risk. A good amount of these deaths were preventable by the drivers themselves. Is there a menu that will pull up give you an test. Decide if you're capable

The 3 sides of the road safety triangle are, the driver, the car, and the road. In 1952, Harold Smith created the Smith System with the 5 Keys. It’s the foundation of every driver’s ed course in the world. In 1965, Ralph Nader published the book Unsafe At Any Speed. This approach involves car makers like Mazda. In 1995, Sweden created the Vision Zero program to use street design to target zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Many cities started programs with the same name but are steered by politicians who have no training in safety and the results they get reflect it. Some cities do have more serious safety programs for their streets. Hoboken, New Jersey, had zero traffic fatalities for the past 7 years. A growing number of cities claim zero traffic fatalities for a recent or current year. It looks like Mazda wants to do its part to participate in safety which is good but I haven’t heard more than generalities and a dependency on safer streets programs for their safety record interests. Every city of any size, including ALL large cities have initiatives to encourage bicycling for local transportation, to have car free zones in their cities and encourage residents to be car free. Switching to bicycles can mean a substantial drop in new car sales. It’s more than car makers being forced to build battery electric cars or die. Sales of any cars could go down worldwide. That actually appears to be what’s happening despite the bicycle being conspicuously absent from his predictions.

In the book You Can Fix Stupid, the authors talk about scuba diving, that it’s become safer than going to the bowling alley not because it’s inherently safe but because so much regulation and training is involved, plus everyone is required to have insurance: the dive locations, manufacturers of the equipment, the instructors and schools, and the divers. But let’s think about this. If diving is safer than a bowling alley, what’s the point of insurance? It’s like this for driving. As we get fewer serious crashes, that should result in reduced insurance premiums. But it’s not so simple at least for now. If you live and drive in Hoboken, you will likely also drive outside this city, where they have fatalities. And they still haven’t eliminated serious injury crashes or ones with significant property damage... yet. We are making progress with safety but it’s slow. Someone said to me recently, eliminate car crashes by eliminating cars. That’s true but not necessary. First, people riding bicycles and pedestrians occasionally cause serious and fatal injuries so eliminating cars would make a big difference but would not eliminate the harm. And Hoboken eliminated fatalities without eliminating cars.

I agree with John on V2V or V2X technology. It can be a real game changer. As a first responder it alone can save lives. V2X, cameras' for side mirrors and adaptive laser and advanced headlights are all ready for mass use but NHTSA and DOT suck at allowing anything decent to make it to production in the US. DOT is an enemy of the people for their slow walking good safety technology prohibited for decades.

Safer steering is more than just avoiding a head on collision. Striking more to the side instead of head on (with rear end crash, the left headlight would strike the right brake light) would put the energy of a crash into a spin instead of taking the full force of the crash. Plus the old saying, If a crash can’t be avoided, Hit to the side not head on, Hit soft bush not hard rock, Hit an object not a person.

I don’t think it’s “hate” most of the criticism is deserved. Mazda is no longer able to remain relevant and maybe if the statements made in this interview took place 10 or 20 years ago they would have been well received.

At least half of that 40,000 is derived from DRUNK driving accidents. Over inflated, just like half of gun deaths are from suicides, not people killing one another. Just gives the,m high numbers to push a cause. Make drunk driving more punitive and/make encourage better driving behavior, it would be possible. Oh and bring back manuals. That, would reduce talking on your phone.

Insurance premiums will dictate in the end the level of safety. Being unable to speed will force compliance, maybe even making it possible to increase the maximum speed limits.

Something to take note is something Elon Musk said. He said the Tesla semi is so efficient it will soon beat rail. I would love to see Tesla start to build trains and locomotives making them more efficient and safe. Innovation in trains is something I’m keeping my eye on as we move forward.

Thanks. If it’s so efficient, it’s worth making more efficient and get more use. Seeing people other than Musk and Tesla doing this sounds like a hard task, though it would make sense if everyone was involved with innovation.

I know I'm going to die. I don't mind passive safety. At the same time, I don't want an outside forces in my life, taking from my driving enjoyment, or protecting me from myself. I don't wanna die in hospice for the same reason. I don't want anymore endless, and needlessly complex vehicles. It's the same reason, I don't want the police to invade my home, to save me from myself. My father died at 93, at home, without strangers invading his space. I don't talk on the phone, or text, or eat or drink., when I drive. I don't want a vehicle that's trying to predict what I, and other drivers are going to do next. You'll get that one wrong. I don't want to be forced to blow into a device to start my car. I don't want big brother's heavy hand in my life, under the guise of protecting me....from me...or everybody else. I already have a Savior. I certainly don't want to pay for this. You could save people from themselves, by locking them in padded cells, too. For most of this...NO THANKS. I'd rather have my freedom, and an inexpensive reliable body on frame SUV. I don't want a soulless box, that spies on me, and sells all my information. I have more important things than being a beta tester, for iffy ideas meddling people have, about haw to stop me from living my life. All the recalls on my current Yukon Denali, are over defective safety technology. Now they represent a bigger personal danger, even if I don't crash. No I don't want to stand on the Dealer's service drive trying to replace all the intrusive junk, and talk to all the other people who are suffering the same endless repairs. Stop..... it's too much...way too much, and certainly unaffordable. No wonder people don't love cars anymore. Everyone of us will die, one day. Stop wring your hands, and act accordingly. You might find, you'll enjoy your life more, if someone else wasn't trying to stop the inevitable. The biggest danger most will face, is having inflation rob them of their golden years. All this endlessly forcing greater, and more expanding technology, is causing inflation. Now instead of writing a $60,000 check for my SUV, I have to write over $100K. I can afford it, but most can't This is bankrupting consumers, and handing them inflation, that will force many to live in their vehicle. The same one, that enslaved them. If you want to save people from a bad fate, this would be where we should start.

It'll never happen. It's impossible. For starters you'll need a breathylyzer ignition interlock, Faraday cage to stop cell phone use, horsepower limits and speed governors, minimum. Then you need the best brakes and LIDAR known to man to detect obstacles with a system at 99.9999999999% accuracy. You need to almost decouple humans completely from driving. At that point just stop making cars and go all in on mass transport. Which is what I'd wish happen. I love my manuals like I love 2A, from my cold dead hands, but driving and car ownership is too stressful, overpriced, and almost not worth the headache

At last - car manufacturers are trying to deal with the fact that any deaths on the roads is an unacceptable loss of life. Dare I say that Tesla paved the way with creating safer cars, and advanced crash avoidance via camera based AI, and others MUST follow ? Either way, its a great sign that Legacy Auto are finally taking this tragic loss of life seriously... a million lives lost annually around the world is a statistic that we should ALL feel uncomfortable with - and really have auto makers tried their best to reduce this ? Have you seen ANY US adverts about this? You have a 2 ton, 60 mph death machine, and you are not paying attention, as you look at your phone, worry about work /relationship issues, put on your makeup, or trying to keep your kids in order ?

Tesla is far more advanced in vehicle safety than probably all legacy auto makers put together. They need to talk less and catch up to technology.
