The Mazda2 is hands down my favorite in this class. I couldn't care less if it only has 100HP, because when you are driving around town it certainly doesn't feel like it. It is nimble and it is great to drive. The Fiesta has more tech features and a nicer interior, but it also costs more and isn't nearly as fun to drive.

I have one and it's surprisingly very capable on the highway. I commute on an 70 MPH interstate every day and the car feels solid and planted with sufficient merging power. It's doesn't have the autobahn-tuned stability of a Volkswagen Golf but it's also 700 pounds lighter.

My dad had a 2 as a loaner while his 6 was in for a fix. I owned 3 Mazdas, '88 to '05, and am short-listing for my next vehicle purchase. I took it out. It was automatic; I hate automatics. Not expecting much, I was floored by how much grunt this thing has -- it's actually quick off the line. It handles incredibly well. Initially, I had trouble with the seat position (I'm 6'3") but once I found the height adjustment, it was even comfortable. Add manual gearbox, this price point, and SOLD.

i got the 2016 mazda 2 (scion ia) and maybe i shoulda got a shifter? my base model comes with cruise control thank god

In Australia, all Mazda 2 models came with cruise control as a standard fitting. For which I'm grateful, mine is a late 2012 base model Neo spec manual. The cruise control gets a lot of use.

I own this car in Touring trim, and it is a fun, great handling lil car. It is getting about 38mpg average, the shifter is fantastic (get the manual!) everything about it feels quality, even the visors. Interior seats in the touring are incredibly nice with red piping. Cruise, pw, pl, pm, tilt, cd/mp3, and great handling and great fuel economy. What more can u ask for 16k or less...and Mazda reliability,

it isn't all about speed folks. Something to be said for character : ) and that little car seems to have tons of it. You know what I mean if you've ever driven an old VW. oh, and a sporty suspension helps too

I bought a Mazda 2 in March. I've had it for 2.5 months and have put 7600 miles on it. I love driving this little Zoom Zoom! My other driver is a Tundra 2007 Crew Max. I call my Zoom Zoom 2 the Go Cart ... The thing is just a fun little gas sipper! :)

mazda 2 are very popular in australia. you see them everywhere, considered to be one of the best light car (subcompact) on the market

Checked this car out at the auto show. My top pick for a small hatch. Lower price tag, nicer style interior (in my opinion), and surprisingly roomy. I'm 5'9 170 and fit very comfortably up front and in back. Surprising amount of legroom in the backseat for such a tiny car. For about $1,000-$1500 more though, you can upgrade to the new '11 Hyundai Elantra, which is larger, 5mpg more efficient on the highway (40mpg, offsetting the extra cost over Mazda2), and has a richer, roomier interior.

I can't say for sure because I don't know much about engines. However I have a Mazda 2 with only 6000 miles on it and I've drove it from new. It just seems to be a noisy little bugger, especially when the engine idol revs up when its cold. No real problems with it though. Apart from the radio changing modes on it's own without warning. I think it may be a loos wire inside the steering coulm because it tends to happen when I turn the wheel to the right. No I'm not hitting the controls on accident

Sounds like a damned good choice. I'm not in the market for a car right now. I live in Taipei, where the MRT system gets me anywhere I need to go. But if I were, the Mazda 2 and Honda Fit would be on my short list. From the reviews I read and watched, it sounds like the Mazda 2 is more or less a Miata in hatchback format.

@Deetroiter I just bought the Mazda 2 after test driving the Honda Fit, Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, and Fiat 500. The Mazda 2 and Fiesta had the best shifter. They are really the same car, made in the same factory. I really liked the Fiat 500 also. Surprisingly the Fit felt like the worse to me.

@TheLacavera I was thinking that myself. Next to the Ford Fiesta, it's pretty unexeptional. Smaller, weaker motor that eats more fuel, fewer features. Although it is cheaper. Fiesta is rather pricey for a small 5-door.

@TheLacavera I wouldn't say it was a throwback. I think what Mazda was trying to do was get their foot in the door of the "Hot Hatch" scene. I am not sure their marketing campaign is overly successful but if you picture a mazda speed body kit on here you would probably see the design interests. I think they were aiming for a sports tuner like you get with so many other hatch backs. Haven't driven this yet but I suspected a lot of what this guy said. Think mazda is on the right track.

I've been considering this car... Wouldn't the weight affect the handling of this car in strong wind? I live in the midwest and we get some crazy windy days. I don't want to be on the interstate having trouble handling because my lightweight Mazda2 is blowing like a leaf. Also - if you have several people in the car, would that increase the weight and affect its driving given its horsepower?

They are not bad, rented one, bad points road noise and super hard suspension, the glovebox lid will chatter. Good points, handling gearbox and steering. Same base as the Ford Fiesta, which I prefer because it rides better

@wrcjunkie The Fiesta is built in Mexico. I beg to differ on the nicer, cleaner and easier to use than the fiesta. But it's all a mater of preference.

The 2011 Mazda 2 is a car for smart people who knows that all you need in a car is to get around. The Mazda 2 can achieve 30 mpg. Thats Honda Civic Territory. All for just $14,425.

These are fine new for 14 grand, max. But let's face it, if you start spending over 15 grand on a new car.. it is best to move up a class. Honda Civic, Subaru Impreza. Negotiate the best deal and avoid the options sheet when looking at entry level class cars to get any value out of them.

I HATE CR and I'm one of their paying members. They drive me NUTS! They give the Mazda 2 a really favorable review then turn around and SHRED the BRILLIANT 2016-2021 Chevrolet Spark. The Spark is nearly *IDENTICAL* to the Mazda 2 spec for spec. Every single positive and negative they state about the Mazda 2 perfectly translates to the Spark...except the Spark has a better manual shifter and the Mazda is 1 second faster to 60mph. I own a 2017 Spark...athletic chassis, genuinely sporty handling, and go-kart fun to drive. It reminds me of my '86 CRX Si. Fit and finish is outstanding, and the 5-speed manual transmission is Honda-good. It's honestly one of the best cars I've owned...and I have mostly purchased Honda's and Scion's in the past. I've got 40K on it and it's been reliable as a hammer. Korean cars have arrived...but CR's ham-fisted review of the Spark clearly illustrates that they missed the memo. Ridiculous bias.
